this is off topic of Swahili, but i just left a review of your Learning Spanish hardcover book that i bought on Amazon, and I included a photo as well. Amazon says it may take a day or two to be reviewed and posted. It is great having this book to try and move from A1-A2 up to a fully conversational speaker. I even talked a tutor who only accepts B1 and higher into accepting me for conversation practice on this coming Wednesday, even tho she knows I am an A1 level, so needless to say I'm scouring thru your book right now, which reminded me to do the Amazon review. thanks again buddy!!!!!

Please review Chaos Theory...the theory if émergence. The sand cone is the physical example I relate to Best. As a grain of sand is placed or dropped on a sand pile no one knows when and which grain of sand will cause a sand pile to rush down AND flatten. Adding the words, gestures, a ways of acting when using a language is the same. No one knows how many elements of language it takes. When that key word, act, gesture comes into or from our brain no one knows. Write Mike when that world strikes.

I went back home to Brasil. The first reason I had to return was to buy books. There are few books in Brasileño homes in Brasil and almost none in Brasileño homes outside of Brasil. Electrónica Books are good but one must know Português to find them. If there is a hit song sweeping across Brasil we do not know it if we are outside Brasil. Next where are you going to get a grammar? How will you know which one is good. Who will you talk to? Português is almost impossível to learn online because one must learn how to place the organs of speech together to produce the sounds. Take Eu vou a voltar a casa pra comer pêche 🎣. Hearing that and saying that are not thé same thing. Then it is about 1000 Dollars to fly to Rio ou São Paulo. When you get there how do you get to the place where a person lives who can help you without Portugués? This is Mike's Channel and you asked the question of him. He will have to help you from this point on. If he permits it I will connect you with a Português speaker who will help you. But the person who helps you will know little if any English. Too me nothing stalls progress more than a multi lengual speaker. When we are stressed we toss the leason plan out and revert to a student language. I can stick my proud chest out and tell you all about Portugués but when you pass that lady at the air port in Brasil that will be the last English you will hear. If you must sink or swim there you need to start you backstroke and float where ever you are. In 30 years outside of Brasil I have no met one none native speaker who can communicate. I heard one Portugués teacher who was close but he was giving his leason in English. The only other option you have is to go to Boston. 2.3 million Mineros live there. Look up Band News. Look up Vagalume. Look up
dicionario.priberam.org/. Do not use an English to Português Dictionnaire yet. Do not use a Brasileña online dictionnaire yet. If I tell you to close the lock of the car door in Brasil I will tell you trova a porta. The first world is Italiano the a is Greek and porta is Latín. You are going to have to know Spanish, Italiano, French, Latín, AND Greek. You are going to have to be able to tolerate Chinese also. Lastly it takes 28 years to speak academia English. 40 years for Spanish on that level. Then 47 years to reach that level in Portuguese. The majorité of speakers in all of the languages I have mentioned never reach that level and nor have I. I sum up with this.Vou a banho posso chichi. I go to the bath room posso is pure Latin chichi Is Chinese. It means yes. But yes is sim so I am not going in there to say yes. Ask Mike if you need my help.

Yes, I speak/read conversational Chinese and Japanese and agree. I've also taught Japanese and would tell my students that learning the script not only helps in pronunciation, but also noticing words (especially ones with Kanji that you know). You're probably not going to see romanized Japanese words floating around, so refusing to learn the script handicaps you from the start and leaves a nightmare hanging over your head.

Great video! I didn't realize we had so much in common and are about the same age. When I learn new words/phrases, I try to use them when speaking to myself. It's just kind of fun honestly. Just like you said with numbers and working out, when speaking English, I also randomly ask myself if I could say that in the languages I've learned. This makes me challenge myself and helps me remember words and allows me to notice words I've "forgotten".
Anyway, there's so much I could say after watching this video. But I just want to say, as someone who minored in Chinese & Japanese, self-studied Swahili for a couple of years, and is now intensively learning Spanish, I relate to you and this video so much and wish you the best of luck with Kiswahili and any language you learn in the future (Japanese). You are right. I always ask this question when ever I have to deal with an intellectuel: "How does one hit a baseball?". Why that question? Because pitching and hitting with an object is what seperates the human brain from all others. Sounds simplistically stupid right? Now think about It. If you were in a fight would you like to uses teeth and claws of a lion or a pile of rocks and a stick? In Latin to read means to choose, to collect, to sellect. A man with a stick and a pile of rocks has to quickly select the best rock to throw. Physical sélection proceed all other human ablites. One has to read the leaves and the red fruit hanging on a bush or tree if one is to live. Choose the wrong red fruit and one dies. That is why reading always proceeds speaking. Babies are no exception. The reason I have gone on like this is because of thé beauté of thé métaphore. Truth most often is in plain view. So how does one hit a baseball? The same way one learns to speak. Not by hearing bat strike ball but by watching a batter select the pitch he can strike and watching the batter's swing. A babe born blind starts to speak , to sign is to speak also, later than a child who cannot hear. ua-cam.com/video/eMGYTLoo14Y/v-deo.html Sée scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=A++born+blind+starts+to+speak+later+than+a+child+who+cannot+hear.&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&t=1690101212771&u=%23p%3DIsmZaYf3RRwJ. A graduate degree in ESL? That sounds intense. I wonder how it will affect your language learning. It sounds like something I would want to do except I would worry about paying off my student loans before I die lol. I've heard several times that people learn grammar concepts in a certain order be they native speakers or 2nd language speakers but they never say what that order is. It seems like something worth knowing. I bet they teach you that in your curriculum somewhere.
I think speaking is huge but at the same time it can be demotivating when you constantly struggle to say simple things and the only person you have to compare yourself to is the person you're talking to who is a native speaker. Early on I think group lessons or classes are so nice because you can compare yourself to other learners (they say not to but we're all going to do it anyway so might as well have some people who are maybe around your level/background and at least aren't native speakers). But try to find group lessons online. It's hard. I think the best option would be to find a study partner in real life and then sign up for small group classes together but I don't know anyone in real life who wants to learn Spanish never mind Korean.

Que Más Paul? I’ve actually learned about what you described in your first paragraph in one of my courses last semesters. You are saying to yourself I ask about order but it is a chicken and an egg question. Sir, a chicken must come first. Then the chicken under goes subdivisión. When what preys upon the chicken under subdivisión consumes both parts the few chicken who are left lay eggs and defend the eggs while the eggs are in a protective shell. The order of a thing tell us little. The forces that drive one to a select order is what counts. All Européen language were preserved and codified by priest writing by candle light alone in a cell. I wouldn't start with the Alchemist. It's tough for a beginner. I would use the readers that I mentioned in my video titled "How I learned Spanish in Less Than a Year".

@MikeBen blessed... thanks so much! And man, you're inspiration. Not that it matters, but it's cool to see a brother from the south (I grew up in small town Troy, AL), so engaged in language learning. My goal is to tackle Spanish and move to Mandarin next.

For a good Spanish grammar book, would you recommend Madrigal's Key to Spanish or something else?

    • @MikeBen

Madrigal’s Key to Spanish or Mike Ben’s Guide to Spanish would be the ones that I’d recommend. This one is also good:
Complete Spanish Step-by-Step, Premium Second Edition by Barbara Bregstein
