  • What's up guys! Super excited to finally have my hands on Folio Society's Limited Edition printing of The Poetic Edda. Also known as the Elder Edda. This book is huge - and gorgeous.
While it is impossible to know exactly how old and by whom these poems were originally composed - nearly all of the works in the Poetic Edda were found in a single manuscript, The Codex Regius, which was written by an Icelandic scribe around 1200 AD and was rediscovered in the mid-17th century when it was gifted to the King of Denmark, Frederick III. There are many very interesting ways that modern scholars have been able to determine that the Codex Regius was the result of this scribe copying from a much older text which is now lost to us.
The authors and works that have been inspired by the tales from The Poetic Edda are many - not the least of which are Richard Wagner's Ring cycle and Tolkien's Middle Earth.
I'm so happy to have such a wonderful copy of this important work in my collection! If you enjoyed this, please consider subscribing to the channel as it really helps the channel grow and reach more people!
See ya on the next one!
