Genesis 3 Lexham English Bible The Fall 3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal[a] which Yahweh God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God indeed say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat, 3 but from the tree that is in the midst of the garden, God said, ‘You shall not eat from it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die’.” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You shall not surely die. 5 For God knows that on the day you both eat from it, then your eyes will be opened and you both shall be like gods,[b] knowing good and evil.” 6 When[c] the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was a delight to the eyes, and the tree was desirable to make one wise, then[d] she took from its fruit and she ate. And she gave it also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then[e] the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed together fig leaves and they made for themselves coverings. 8 Then[f] they heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden at the windy time of day.[g] And the man[h] and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. 9 And Yahweh God called to the man[i] and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he replied,[j] “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid because I am naked, so I hid myself.” 11 Then he[k] asked,[l] “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I forbade you to eat?”[m] 12 And the man[n] replied,[o] “The woman whom you gave to be with me-she gave to me from the tree and I ate.” 13 Then[p] Yahweh God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 Then[q] Yahweh God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you will be cursed more than any domesticated animal and more than any wild animal.[r] On your belly you shall go and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 And I will put hostility between you and between the woman, and between your offspring[s] and between her offspring;[t] he will strike you on the head, and you will strike him on the heel.” 16 To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pain in childbearing;[u] in pain you shall bear children. And to your husband shall be your desire. And he shall rule over you.” 17 And to Adam[v] he said, “Because you listened to the voice of your wife and you ate from the tree from which I forbade you to eat,[w] the ground shall be cursed on your account. In pain you shall eat from it all the days of your life. 18 And thorns and thistles shall sprout for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow[x] you shall eat bread, until your return to the ground. For from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” 20 And the man[y] named[z] his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all life. 21 And Yahweh God made for Adam[aa] and for his wife garments of skin, and he clothed them. 22 And Yahweh God said, “Look-the man has become as one of us, to know good and evil. What if[ab] he stretches out his hand and takes also from the tree of life and eats, and lives forever?” 23 And Yahweh God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So[ac] he drove the man out, and placed cherubim east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming, turning sword[ad] to guard the way to the tree of life.

Now I am an old man I now realise how fast our time on earth goes by . I wish I could explain that to the young ones so they could use their time well , being nice , helping others best they can , understand that time is a wonderful thing to be used wisely. To care for everyone, not just other humans but animals etc as well . Don't waste what time you have on religion just live as wisely as you can . It costs nothing to be kind , you will have a much more fulfilling life living that way I promise.
@@delprice3007 One of the best things about learning from your human experiences is understanding not to judge and condemn the harmless actions of others. To be nice because you’d like others to be nice to you. If you learn your understandings of behaviour from religion you’ll likely judge and condemn homosexuals, women, non-theists of your creed etc etc. Bigoted, horrendous behaviours that harm others in the name of your chosen sect.

I remember when I first discovered Christopher Hitchens, I was hooked. In the next week or so, I watched and listened to every available debate. Because of these debates, I learned of Dawkins, Krauss, Harris and Fry. I am so grateful to have access to Hitchens, and I wish he were here today.
The exact same thing happened to me too. I didn't discover that he was dead before months later, and it made me really sad. Imagine the things he would have said (and the impact he would have had) on all the things that has happened these last years. It's such a loss that he was taken too soon
Thank God for Hitch, Rich and Fry. Sorry if that sounds like an English breakfast, but what harm? it was always the most delicious way of starting the day.
I spent a lifetime as a Mormon, and renounced it when I was in my early 40s. It wouldn’t be fair for me to say that I received nothing of value from my participation in it. But what I didn’t fully understand until I left, is that I never needed any supernatural pretext to live a virtuous life… and not only that, my ability to be a good person was hampered by the way my religion conflated righteousness with cultural protectionism. It encouraged more preoccupation with the way I spoke, what I drank, the way I dressed, who I associated with… than being a true friend to everybody. And those thought patterns are still difficult to cast aside… as in, it’s difficult not just to be the inverse of what I was. I’ve heard of people who have left my faith, became self-described atheists, and who have come back to the faith. The common theme I notice in all of their stories is that they never found peace in unbelief. I get that. It’s hard to not have that anesthetizing belief to soften the edges of the harsh realities of an inherently meaningless existence, especially after having it for all of your life. That was me. I ultimately found my peace in defining my own meaning. I live, I can feel pain and pleasure, I can love and loathe; and most of all, I’m relieved of the burden of searching for ultimate meaning. It’s such a rest. Life has become a lot more precious to me now that I am convinced that this is the only life I have. And my self loathing at the hands of an incoherent doctrine that creates a problem and offers the solution in a single package, is no longer a part of my life. Even my marriage to a believer has become sweeter overall, though not without its difficult moments. But it’s taught us both radical acceptance… the kind that, if practiced in a widespread way, would eliminate so much unnecessary suffering in the world. For me… I am better off in every way without religion.
Good for you. I’m guessing there’s a good in just about every religion but it’s definitely not necessary for being the best you can be. Too bad you’re missing out on the bulletproof underwear now (or am I thinking about another religion now).😊

As a mother of a handicapped daughter, religion had nothing to do with me raising and loving her. Just the opposite. I have 3 born again sisters, who proclaim to love her, but didnt offer a moments help, but didnt mind calling me up to watch their children so they could have some time off from being a parent.
I feel you. Two disabled kids here, now legal adults... and now I'm terminally ill. For *decades* we plodded through life at a Children's Hospital, supported by those who were SECULAR. But never the religious. The ONLY time we saw religious vultures was in crisis when they would try to FORCE their way into private rooms to preen, interfere, and hiss out smug, selfish cliches. Thankfully, we live in a secular country, where religious parasites & vultures are NOT valued about patient RIGHTS. They were kept away from us, which, of course, "offended" their sense of entitlement. Throughout those decades there was no HELP from religious types, only showing off. Religious types were repeatedly selfish, arrogant, smug, saturated with privilege, stinking of arrogance, and always bragging about their supposed "superiority". "Superiority" that was never shown, never demonstrated. They helped none, did nothing, built only egos, and demonstrated the true nature of religion in every moment - selfishness - every moment of every day. We saw that *NOTHING* the religious people did was done without a BRIBE. They demanded, expected a selfish "reward" for EVERYTHING, or they did nothing. But a non-believer has no expectation of a reward, they are simply good because they CHOOSE TO BE. And THOUSANDS of secular types rushed to help us over, and over, and over... Religious types wallowed in bigoted stereotypes, privilege, profound ignorance and illiteracy, and a constant stream of EXCUSES for LYING about help or support they promised. They would offer help, then forget to do it, but still DEMAND CREDIT, as if only imaginary "help" mattered. But then, they already worship an imaginary gawd, so they aren't capable of real world decency.
Richard Dawkins’s closing argument is very powerful and really resonates with me. You don’t need religion to be good or feel emotions or be kind. Kindness, emotions, and doing good is an innate part of human beings. These things are spontaneous and requires no instruction. Also, im tired of religion claiming that you need God to do these things. Its pretty much insulting to what human beings are naturally capable of doing.
If you have good morals they came from the Bible. Somewhere in your ancestry there was a Christian. That person taught his children according to the Bible, and it was passed down until you, or someone before you ended the practice. The morals you have, like it or not, came from the Christian in your ancestry. The same is true for all/nearly all of us. You're too intelligent to believe in God, yet you're dumb enough to think you somehow had good morals from day one. You didn't need any teaching or guidance, that's how great you and Dawkins are. We're all sinners, you included. How much worse if the Bible never existed? You would commit many more sins/crimes against others had there never been a Bible and God. Don't kid yourself, you did nothing to earn or deserve this life, and none of us are magically born wonderful, law abiding, moral individuals. Cavemen drug their woman around by the hair. Maybe we should go back to that. I prefer that to murdering pure innocence in the womb.

You're essentially saying, that "thinking people" are all drones, mindlessly nodding their empty heads in agreement, with "don't think for yourself, let me think for you." on repeat. If you haven't come to the conclusion, that the possibility there might be a creator, in whatever form that might be, just because you're pissed off they didn't give you their contact info, you're not a thinking person at all.

@@MNAHN-T.GOF-NNYou are only mentioning a fact that in itself was not the most significant. The actual reason of his hatred of Christianity and all religions together with it come from both the stupidity of all religions that are false and man-made AND the fact that a former priest managed to take his mother away from the family and that his mother committed a joint suicide with him leaving his father without a wife and Christopher and his brother without a mother.
Life is logic and logic requires value for operation in order to make decisions. You weigh things up in your mind and try to make the best decisions based on values, the value we apply to this process is within emotion, which ranges from negative through neutral to positive. We get these emotional values from previous experience via the senses. So the way to exploit this system of logic is to infiltrate value and to do that we can use the concept of belief. Where an opinion is considered true as though it's previous experience to draw from, it also makes everyone within the group the same. In terms of being relatable, all believers are on the same page and can be more easily herded. In the end the manipulation and exploitation of this system of value is designed to create a pyramid scheme, where the peddlers live a better life at the expense of all the followers/believers and people who are trapped between it all. This isn't just about religion, it includes money and any belief of value in intangible concepts to create a society that is the shape of a pyramid, a reward based hierarchy. Anyway, one thing about this is, in order to have a top, you have to first create a bottom.

Really only a couple problems with what he had to say. First, the whole thing about "Shouldn't you want them to be miserable?" - if you read the sermon on the mount, you know that in context, the very next line says "...for they shall be comforted". In other words, that weeping and mourning people will be comforted and that is WHY they are blessed & not because happiness is not wanted or desired. Also that thing about giving all your money away and following, was only in context of the young man who asked him what to do and then pressed him. While it's something that was encouraged, it was not a commandment...probably because of how few people would or could follow it. Doesn't hold a candle to Scruton though, or loads of other idealist-type philosophers. I guess if I'm a philosopher like him all I have to do is assert something for it to be true. "That peculiar word I which doesn't describe anything material..." Yeah, just because you say so? No analysis of how identity is understood or anything about psychology or sociology or biology or even other philosophical outlooks, just announce it and declare it true. Calling something secular when that's irrelevant to regimes in the 20th century (also not proving it), and the old classic of announcing your opponents feel this way or that way without any support either.

I thank -insert diety here- that Hitchens lived in the same time as video and internet so that his messages can live on not only in words but in his delivery and essence. I hope anyone reading this has a good day.
Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins, two of the most deluded humans and agents of the DEVIL 😈 AND LEADERS of the modern atheist movement, have long positioned themselves as champions of reason and science, prescribing against what they perceive as the irrationality of religious belief. But their fervent denial of God’s existence is not merely an intellectual stance. It is a tragic and damning refusal to acknowledge the truth that is self-evident to billions around the world. In their blind rejection of faith, they are not only deluding themselves but also leading countless others down a path of spiritual ruin. Both Hitchens and Dawkins have made careers out of mocking the very idea of God, dismissing centuries of theological thought as mere superstition. Hitchens, with his caustic wit and eloquent prose, attacked religion with a fervour that bordered on the evangelical. His book, "God Is Not Great," stands as a manifesto for those who prefer the comforting illusion of human self-sufficiency over the humbling truth of divine authority. Meanwhile, Dawkins, in "The God Delusion," argues with scientific detachment that belief in God is a form of mental illness, something to be cured rather than cherished. But what Hitchens and Dawkins fail to recognise or perhaps refuse to is that their very obsession with disproving God is evidence of His existence. Why spend so much time and energy arguing against something that does not exist? Their relentless crusade against faith is not a sign of intellectual superiority but rather of a deep-seated fear. They fear the implications of a universe that is not indifferent, that does have a Creator, that does require something from us. Their arrogance blinds them to the spiritual reality that surrounds us all. In their denial of God, they have become unwitting tools of the very force they claim to oppose**evil**. The Bible, Quran and Torah speaks clearly of the father of lies, the devil, who works tirelessly to lead souls away from the truth. Hitchens and Dawkins, in their relentless assault on faith, have done more to further the devil’s work than any satanist or occultist could ever dream. They are living proof that the devil exists, for only a power as malevolent as Satan could twist such brilliant minds into instruments of such profound destruction. Hitchens, who now faces the ultimate reality after his death, has discovered, too late, the price of his hubris. It is the ultimate tragedy that he spent his life denying the very thing that could have saved him. Dawkins, who continues his campaign, is following in the same footsteps, and unless he turns from his path, he too will face the same fate. The irony, of course, is that their disbelief in Hell does not exempt them from it. Hell is not a place of fiery torment simply for those who believe in it, it is the destiny of all who reject God, whether they realise it or not. The devil’s greatest triumph is convincing the world that he does not exist. Hitchens and Dawkins have played right into his hands, spreading the gospel of disbelief and ensuring that countless souls remain ignorant of the truth. But this, too, is evidence of God’s existence, for where there is evil, there must also be good. The very existence of the devil, as revealed through the words and actions of Hitchens and Dawkins, points to the reality of God. The darkness they embrace is defined by the light they reject. In the end, Hitchens and Dawkins are not to be admired for their intellectual prowess but pitied for their spiritual blindness. They have chosen to turn away from the truth, and in doing so, they have sealed their own fates. The time will come when they will have to account for their actions, and on that day, their brilliant arguments and eloquent words will count for nothing. There is only one truth, and it is a truth that they have denied at their peril: God exists, and without Him, there is only Hell.

As an atheist and I’m better off without religion, if others want to believe in religion then that is up to them. The more important thing is that religion should have no place or power in government.
However, government people should be aware of scientific fundamental GAPS. Materialistic scientists do Not Know the origin and source of Life (living organisms). Also, medical science does not know the origin of consciousness.
Atheism will always need religion to validate its none religious sense of identity. Atheism is the all-important post religious phase of the greater spiritual path. It's the necessary limbo state that sits between religiosity and spirituality. Like Neo stuck between two train stations where he can only get rescued from a potential permanent limbo state (Mobil) by the one and only Trinity. The trinity of the Christed path is The Way (through religion), the Truth (Atheism) and The Life (direct spirituality). Scripture was not written by the religious or the atheist, but was written by the spiritual for all spiritual and soul levels.
This is old but a fantastic debate among intellectuals on both sides. Christopher Hitchens is just so very intellectual and insightful, and quick in his rebuttals, while Richard Dawkins is unwavering in his own answers and always stays on point. Something like this should be shown to kids when they reach the age at which they can truly understand all of what’s being said. Not being an educator I don’t know what age that is. The strategy on the other side seemed to be one of trying to distance themselves from what I’d call traditional religion, and trying to hang their hat on behaviors or works that they would like you to attribute to religion, or, trying to make you believe religion is in-bred and we can’t get rid of it so don’t even try. It was a well spent two hours listening to these discussions.
"Kids" do not reach that age. You have to taste some of the bitterness of life, some of the madness bred into us by evolution, to fully understand. The problem with a lot of leftist ideas is that they argue purely based on logic, without taking into account the sometimes illogical nature of humanity. Unless people have the life experience to account for that, it's actually harmful to introduce them to this kind of thinking. They will try to navigate the world according to perfectly logical rules that somehow fail to apply.

In the early days of UA-cam I used to smoke weed & watch Hitchens. 😅
they never ended up talking about the same thing. the proponents said that literal belief in a literal supernatural is unreasonable, so religion is a net negative. while the opponents said that religions remind the listeners of virtues and inspire living them out. when they came close to really having the same terms and objects of debate was when the proponents said "yeah we can have all those good things without the beliefs, we call it culture", and the leftmost professor also remarked how buddhist philosophy has a lot less supernatural claims at its core (mind you i think it still has some), so it's in that sense more ideal. the opposition, esp. the rabbi lady did mention how literal belief is secondary to the moral value religion has for her. so the point is, the opposition wasn't interested in dropping the supernatural belief, even should they have been agnostic. i presume the proponents mostly had a problem with that, and that such irrational beliefs make some people spead, uphold, defend those irrational beliefs by force, getting angry and violent about it, ...which they view as the main evil in religion, so getting rid of the unverifiable is more important than letting a few people be more sad who will only ever engage with religion if the proposed gods were literally true, and not for the good morals they could see in the religion. sth like that.
A splendid example of not being mad at each other’s being simply for having different thought. Disagreement should not equal disrespect. We’d all be better to remember this.

Surely even religious people must occasionally ask themselves; Out of thousands of gods on offer, how come we rejected all of them except the one most-popular in our geographical location?
In his way of thinking, he is gone gone gone forever. What's he going to say if the Lord rejects him? He's gonna be mad that he denied Him very, very publicly.
It would certainly help if many religious people concentrated on being better people instead of trying to make everyone else better. Though the world would benefit if a certain religion did not exist.
And that is not the case for nonreligious people? 🤨 I mean iainclark5964, do you not tell the "religious people" how they can be better people, if they lay down their religion...?
If it weren't religion, humans would find other reasons to control and punish others. It is convenient for us to blame the wishes of deity when we treat others badly.

I've listened to many of these debates and in my humble opinion, religion has everything to prove. What a change from the days when religion called the shots.
You’re still religious. You’ve just traded one set of beliefs for another as society has shifted. Modern ideologies still tell people how to think, what’s right and who to hate.

What difference does it make? You used the word "better". That comes from the word "good". How do you define whats good in the first place without religion? Its definition is subjective according to most atheists anyway.
That's silly. You don't need religion to define what the word good means. How did the people before the creation of your silly religion use the word "good"? Obviously they didn't use that word specifically, but how did they use the equivalent word of their respective language? I'm very certain that they use it in a similar fashion that we use it; good being a positive outcome. And the word bad or their equivalent word from their respective language being a negative outcome. What makes you think that the usage of the word good comes from the Bible? That's the silliest thing I've heard in a long time 😅 Your comment is not "good". 🤦

I agree with you 100. However relegion offers those without the inellect and ability to be introspective such as yourself, rules for the moral traffic. Then there is the social pressures for those with a strong relegious family. The issue as always is the abuse in the name of relegion

I had two managers at work (several years ago now) who, like me, were raised Catholic, yet both were two-faced, liars and backstabbers, hurting others unnecessarily to their own ends. I could never behave like that towards anyone and I long since fell away from the religion. Why should it matter if one is religious or not, which God they believe in and how so long as they don't impose their beliefs on others. The differences between relgions and in the same one - ie Christianity - have caused many wars with people being burnt at the stake or their heads cut off. A moral compass is not necessarily a part of religion.

We would be more advanced, less divided, and have a greater amount of caring for fellow humans without religion. Religion serves as a control mechanism that has stifled humans progress since we began.
I call bologna on that. The underlying reasons why we care for others in western societies is due to the cultural institutions founded on religious principles that do not stand up to scrutiny without an illogical claims made on faith. Without cultish allegiance to illogical claims not seen in physical reality(for example the supposed existence of inalienable rights as opposed to the reality of temporary and mutually beneficial treaties), the natural conclusion is that we are all nothing more than bags of meat in an effectively infinite and uncaring universe. I may care for my family or my immediate friends as part of in-group tribal preference, but beyond such an informal tribe, there is no scientific or logical reason for me to care for some dude squatting in Siberia. Or even a homeless dude on the side of the road on my way to work. Cult instincts and feelings are as much a part of the human psyche and experience as eating and pooping. Otherwise it never would have come into existence in the first place. Which is why in the absence of old institutional religions, people are clinging to political parties, sports teams, and many other cult practices with just as much fervor as a 1600's protestant smashing church windows. Without preexisting religions, humans Will make up their own cult practices. It will always exist in some form for as long as humanity exists. I say all this as an Atheist

@@brendansherlock6442to believe in a deity (or many deities) to be a theist, to be without that belief is to be atheist. To know the answer one way or another is to be gnostic, to not know is to be agnostic. These are not mutually exclusive terms. To lack belief does not mean an active belief that there are no deities. One could not be convinced that there is deity and also not be convinced that there is no deity, and is withholding belief, and thus could consider themselves an agnostic atheist. From there, to question does not slide you on that scale, but instead seeks if it is warranted to move from your position. So one can be a questioning atheist. I think an argument could be had that one can be a questioning gnostic atheist (doesn't believe in a deity and knows there is no deity) depending on what it is that they're questioning and what we mean by know. Additionally, I feel I am pass the questioning phase and believe that I fall under the category of agnostic atheist. I do not feel that a lack of evidence in a deity is sufficient evidence that there is no deity. I think this falls into the black swan fallacy. Still, when asked in a conversation, I describe myself simply as an atheist. These reasons are both personal and political, and describing why would only make this comment significantly longer than it currently is. But, what I would argue most is that we should not force labels on others, even these labels I just defined here. For instance, while I believe that Neil Degrassi Tyson is an atheist, he identifies as an agnostic. I believe that he makes that identification because he does not have a proper understanding of what atheism is, and if I had a chance to talk with him I would love to have that discussion, but I can no more claim that NDT is an atheist than you can claim that the commenter is agnostic.

The superficial ones do not think enough to realize *the simple fact that from no intelligence involved, no intelligence comes,* the entire process until nowadays proving the existence of God because *the results of a process prove the intelligence involved into that process* (even schoolchildren can understand that every photon, ... atom, ... cell has intelligence into it, *not to mention their functionality together).* They ignore the intelligence put from the beginning. For example, the intelligence mentioned includes the exact value of the speed of light matching the manifestation of what we call "gravity", working together since the primordial conditions to form in the end this reality, which hosts intelligent life that is able to feel / understand / admire / enjoy / respect / love the Creator, especially through His human form, Jesus Christ.
The conventional biological evolution is hiding the facts about Satan and the other fallen angels who, according to the "Parable of the weeds", have altered this world, the DNA... As Jesus has said: *_"Be perfect therefore, as your Heavenly Father is perfect"_* Matthew 5, 48 Unfortunately, too many people have refused over history, and too many still refuse nowadays, to follow this.

“Once you assume a creator and a plan, it makes us objects in a cruel experiment whereby we are created sick and commanded to be well, I’ll repeat that, created sick and then ordered to be well. And over us to supervise this is installed a celestial dictatorship, a kind of divine North Korea, greedy for uncritical praise from dawn until dusk and swift to punish the original sins with which it so tenderly gifted us in the first place. However, let no one say there is no cure; redemption is offered at the low price of the surrender of your critical faculties. “Religion” it might be said, must be said would have to admit, makes extraordinary claims, but though I would claim that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, rather daringly provides not even ordinary evidence for its extraordinary supernatural claim. I am asking you is it good for the world to appeal to our credulity and not to our skepticism? Is it good for the world to worship a deity that takes sides in wars and in human affairs? To appeal to our fear and our guilt, to our terror, our terror of death, is it good to appeal? To preach guilt and shame about the sexual act and the sexual relationship, is this good for the world? And asking yourself all the while, are these religious responsibilities as I maintain they are? To terrify children with the image of hell and eternal punishment not just of themselves but of their parents and those they love? Perhaps worst of all to consider women an inferior creation, is that good for the world? And can you name me a religion that has not done that? And to insist that we are created and not evolved in the face of all the evidence? Religion forces nice people to do unkind things and also makes intelligent people do stupid things.” From Christopher Hitchens’ opening statement in a debate with Tony Blair- “is religion good for the world”
Animals do not have religion (so far as we know) yet seem to show a great amount of compassion, love, altruism, and socially enforced quasi-moral standards. We do not need religion to be caring. We do not need religion to desire to ease one another's suffering. There is absolutely zero evidence for the validity of any religion. Yet the scientific perspective grows and changes continuously, evolving much the same as organisms do. It is the proper pursuit of truth and reason. Furthermore, the universe and our existence are already incredibly marvelous. Proposing a glorious afterlife and living for the attainment of that afterlife, which again there is zero evidence for, belittles our own existence and devalues us as the miracles of the universe that we already are. We are all atomic matter, the same as all of the inanimate matter around us. Yet we are consciously aware and able to examine and question our own existence. As Carl Sagan says, "we are a way for the universe to know itself." Magnificent, poetic, and based in reality.
I can remember the moment, at seven years old, that I began to doubt religion. I was thinking about the concept of eternal punishment (and literal punishment is what we were taught), and what kind of evil mindset a being would need to have to even conceive of such a thing, much less implement it.
Pity? So condescending. We have the State and the Law and Enforcement to remind us, along with the "threat of fines and jail time" when we violate certain moral codes. Should I pity those who have a healthy respect for the Law and its ramifications as a criminal? We humans are bent to break laws and go too far, so some threats are good for our cohesion and civility. Plus, there are rewards to that, i.e. a peaceful, well-oiled machine of a Society with trust and unselfishness. Now, bring God back into it. For those who believe and live such morality out before Him in their religion, can you see how it's nothing to pitied, but given its proper due? We respect His Law, because we trust Him, especially His goodness, justice, mercy and wisdom. Otherwise, we create our own Hell here on earth by our own doing. You can criticize religion as "policing", but you are policed as well. Better to be real and admit it with your eyes wide open.

There's still a little bit of that left because of the people that grew up in that time period. Mostly in smaller cities and villages. Which time period do I mean? The time where Germany was divided. And where I grew up was NOT the western part of it. Before anyone assumes again what I mean: I don't think much was good at that time in that place but the people. @elmohead, no, it’s the same trick repeated over and over. In the end, both Hitchens and Dawkins have conceded that there is most likely a higher power of one sort or another, hardly the stance of an atheist with conviction.
@@vincewidemann868 it's logical to think that there is a higher power. In an infinite number of multiverses, there is infinitely more universes with a higher power than one in which humans are the highest power. Doesn't mean god.
@@elmohead I suppose it is worth asking what is logic and where does it come from? If a human commits to a theory which is logical to them after believing or disproving another then he or she would probably religiously try to justify this belief they have found in a new logical point of view becoming so arrogant that no one else could possibly disprove it. Dawkins and Hitchens could be right. However they could be wrong as humans are infallible. We are organic and there are may things that we can not know. Who is going to say without any doubt that we can know everything there is to know. And if that is the case there is always room for doubt and the possibility of something unimaginable something not yet discovered or experienced.
myths, boundless greed and insatiable lust for power also exist in high degrees outside of religion, history shows this as well. So I would kindly suggest you rethink this matter more carefully as it is not one sided... I used to also be turned of by the word religion until I realized how much good it has done and continues to do.The root word of religion means to bring together. So religions not doing this, should be called out. There is 2 sides to every coin.

Certainly a man of considerable intelligence, even if I do not agree with all his views. And we know that his heart was definitely in the right place, he wanted to help people escape from the negative effects of religion.
The Fall
3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal[a] which Yahweh God had made.
Have you eaten from the tree from which I forbade you to eat?”[m] 12 And the man[n] replied,[o] “The woman whom you gave to be with me-she gave to me from the tree and I ate.” 13 Then[p] Yahweh God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 Then[q] Yahweh God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
you will be cursed
more than any domesticated animal
and more than any wild animal.[r]
On your belly you shall go
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put hostility
between you and between the woman,
and between your offspring[s] and between her offspring;[t]
he will strike you on the head,
and you will strike him on the heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will greatly increase
your pain in childbearing;[u]
in pain you shall bear children.
And to your husband shall be your desire.
And he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam[v] he said, “Because you listened to the voice of your wife and you ate from the tree from which I forbade you to eat,[w]
the ground shall be cursed on your account.
In pain you shall eat from it
all the days of your life.
18 And thorns and thistles shall sprout for you,
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow[x]
you shall eat bread,
until your return to the ground.
For from it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.”
20 And the man[y] named[z] his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all life.

The exact same thing happened to me too. I didn't discover that he was dead before months later, and it made me really sad. Imagine the things he would have said (and the impact he would have had) on all the things that has happened these last years. It's such a loss that he was taken too soon
I love Hitchens and Fry. The rest are just ok.

Thank God for Hitch, Rich and Fry. Sorry if that sounds like an English breakfast, but what harm? it was always the most delicious way of starting the day.
Same for me too
I spent a lifetime as a Mormon, and renounced it when I was in my early 40s.

👍👍👍👍👍
Worse not worst. For fuck's sake.
Right? Inside the brain of every _thinking person..._ is the voice of someone else. That makes zero sense.
Your illiteracy betrays your bias.
Agree wholeheartedly. But no comma needed, and don’t you mean worse instead of worst?
I grew up as a YEC Christian. I remember hearing Hitchens and Dawkins and those like them were literally of the devil and evil. Now I see why, because they make sense. That's very dangerous in ideology that cannot stand up to scrutiny. I would definitely agree with the motion put forth by them.
Hitchens' obsession with Christianity does indeed make sense when you consider the fact that his mother was jewish.
It is a shame you saw the light and opted to move in the other direction.

Adam’s Descendants to Noah
5 This is the record of the generations[a] of Adam. When[b] God created Adam,[c] he made him in the likeness of God. 2 Male and female he created them. And he blessed them. And he called their name “Humankind” when[d] they were created. 3 And when Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he fathered a child in his likeness, according to his image. And he called his name Seth. 4 And the days of Adam after he fathered Seth were eight hundred years. And he fathered sons and daughters. 5 And all the days of Adam which he lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.
6 When[e] Seth had lived one hundred and five years, he fathered Enosh. 7 And after Seth had fathered Enosh he lived eight hundred and seven years, and fathered sons and daughters. 8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.
9 When[f] Enosh lived ninety years, he fathered Kenan. 10 And after Enosh fathered Kenan he lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and fathered sons and daughters. 11 And all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.
12 When[g] Kenan had lived seventy years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 And after Kenan had fathered Mahalalel, he lived eight hundred and forty years, and fathered sons and daughters. 14 And all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.
15 When[h] Mahalalel had lived sixty-five years, he fathered Jared. 16 And after Mahalalel had fathered Jared, he lived eight hundred and thirty years, and fathered sons and daughters. 17 And all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.
18 When[i] Jared had lived one hundred and sixty-two years, he fathered Enoch. 19 And after Jared had fathered Enoch, he lived eight hundred years, and fathered sons and daughters. 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.
21 When[j] Enoch had lived sixty-five years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 And Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah three hundred years, and fathered sons and daughters. 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God, and he was no more, for God took him.
25 When[k] Methuselah had lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, he fathered Lamech. 26 And after Methuselah had fathered Lamech, he lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and fathered sons and daughters. 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.
28 When[l] Lamech had lived one hundred and eighty-two years, he fathered a son. 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one shall relieve us[m] from our work, and from the hard labor of our hands, from the ground which Yahweh had cursed. 30 And after Lamech had fathered Noah he lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and he fathered sons and daughters. 31 All the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died.
32 When[n] Noah was five hundred years old,[o] Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

No proof of Moses, yet you have faith. Do folks fall for your myth?@@michaelnurge1652

I thank -insert diety here- that Hitchens lived in the same time as video and internet so that his messages can live on not only in words but in his delivery and essence. I hope anyone reading this has a good day.
Christopher starts this blowing everything away! He truly was a legend of reason! What a loss for humanity!
I surely miss his sharp & honest mind.
Christopher Hitchens killed off this debate, and he even had Professor Dawkins next to him; madly impressive.
When I first bumped into Dawkins I felt like "why does he waste his energy on bashing religion? And in a not modern way? Fighting myths instead of concentrating perhaps on the psychological or other aspects of religion?" But that´s because I come from one of the most atheist countries in the world and the fact that some people actually believe in God the old fashioned way (and in huge numbers) was so alien to me, so nutty and stupid, just bonkers. How can you believe THAT? I could understand less developed countries and tradition but christianity the way it goes on for example in the US, that´s just something that I can´t fathom.

As an atheist and I’m better off without religion, if others want to believe in religion then that is up to them. The more important thing is that religion should have no place or power in government.
It's unfortunate that cults get a pass on paying the taxes that other legitimate businesses and enterprises must pay.
No, religion will always need atheism to validate its non atheist sense of identity.
The fool says in his heart there is no God. The great scientist Einstein once said: Science without religion os lame.

Quite right about this being important for kids to get some exposure to once they can interpret clear enough, truly enriches the mind. I personally don't have a fancy job or a successful career but seeing a number of lectures & debates as a teenager developed a wonderful love of books & discussions.
Yes. The religious should be respected, but religion itself should be disrespected.
In general, people have no problem with religion as long as it stays in church and doesn't influence public policies.

I call bologna on that. The underlying reasons why we care for others in western societies is due to the cultural institutions founded on religious principles that do not stand up to scrutiny without an illogical claims made on faith.

Can't be a questionimg atheist, you are an agnostic

The superficial ones do not think enough to realize *the simple fact that from no intelligence involved, no intelligence comes,* the entire process until nowadays proving the existence of God because *the results of a process prove the intelligence involved into that process* (even schoolchildren can understand that every photon, ... atom, ... cell has intelligence into it, *not to mention their functionality together).*
They ignore the intelligence put from the beginning.
(making the carnivores, the parasites, the viruses, bad bacteria etc....) to sustain the useless suffering while, initially, all insects, animals etc. were feeding only with plants (plants products, such as fruits, nectar, seeds etc.).
The fallen angels, being sadistic, have altered the DNA of most living things (including us) to do as default both: reproduce uncontrollably (as much as they can) and fight (kill) each other. Unfortunately, they love to see living things suffering, especially human beings suffering.
Because any child is a chance for a soul to escape hell, they want to destroy us since our physical body conception (all the time in any way possible). That is why they make us suffer, as much as possible, by using our stupidity and the stupidity of the other people around us.
*All evil has been done because of stupidity and the main/worst stupidity has always been to not listen by God/Jesus.*
In particular, for mankind, if ALL people (over history and nowadays) would have followed the main commandment from Jesus Christ, *besides to love / respect our Heavenly Father, to love / respect (care for) the other humans as we love / respect (care for) ourselves,* all the crimes and the tremendous useless suffering would have never happen. As Jesus has said: *_"Be perfect therefore, as your Heavenly Father is perfect"_* Matthew 5, 48
Unfortunately, too many people have refused over history, and too many still refuse nowadays, to follow this.
Well spoken Professor Richard Dawkins. I fully agree with you.

Emojis don't know what they mean. They tell us nothing,
“Once you assume a creator and a plan, it makes us objects in a cruel experiment whereby we are created sick and commanded to be well, I’ll repeat that, created sick and then ordered to be well.
Religion forces nice people to do unkind things and also makes intelligent people do stupid things.”

THE MOTION IS CARRIED
There has never been doubt in my mind since I was able to rationalise thoughts that I would be better off without religion and I moved on!
I feel pity for those who need the threat of a hell after death and a religion (policing them) making sure they do the right thing.
Agreed. As an immoral atheist I have raped, murdered, and beaten every person in my life I have wanted to.
(ZERO).
@@machtnichtsseimann I not only pity, but despise those who believe without question or evidence a genocidal god who gives rules on how to treat one's slaves.
@@thedubwhisperer2157 And you make a reply to @machtnichtsseimann without addressing any of his/her points. You seem like a dismissive, hateful person.
45:45 I don't know about other communities but where I grew up, Religion was just not a thing. That didn't prevent the people from helping each other without expecting anything back. Doing what they could with little what they had to help each other.
Isn't it incredible that sometimes you can always find something/ anything worth watching from Christopher Hitchens, this was a very enjoyable debate. Thanks for uploading.
Comedians like Ricky Gervais or George Carlin have provided so much laughter in my life. It's hard for me to imagine a world where they would be out of work, or not as funny.
Good point. 😅
Plus we would not have had Hitchslaps or Richard interviewing Haggard and Wendy Wright. 😂
"It's hard for me to imagine a world where they would be out of work..." Hell.
I find Ricky to be a bit a wank, inexplicably can’t stand him. George Carlin is one of the greats though, still unbelievable him and Christopher are gone.
@@davet9900 I’m sure they have pretty decent careers in hell. If hell wasn’t imaginary that is.
For all of the great minds debating the existence of a God, I don't think anybody summed it up better than George Carlin did in 2 minutes.
When you have Dawkins and Hitchens as your opponent, just give up. Your two options are: lose the debate or get hitchslapped and lose the debate.
I think Dawkins is a one trick pony. And just like the rest of us he is human and all humans make mistakes. Don't they?
@@Si-cb4kh well, he wrote many books arguing against religion so it's definitely more than one trick.
Yes. Humanity needs to outgrow or find a cure for primitive myths, boundless greed and insatiable lust for power.
myths, boundless greed and insatiable lust for power also exist in high degrees outside of religion, history shows this as well. So I would kindly suggest you rethink this matter more carefully as it is not one sided... I used to also be turned of by the word religion until I realized how much good it has done and continues to do.The root word of religion means to bring together. So religions not doing this, should be called out. There is 2 sides to every coin.

@@J0PHIEL Wait no longer. A god telling his followers to destroy every woman in a town who is not a virgin. That same god telling its readers to destroy entire towns full of men, women and children who refused to believe in him. Equally that god telling its followers that a woman must marry a man who has raped her. There are plenty more if you need them. Oh. And not so wicked but that same god also made a donkey have a conversation with the man who beat it. This Biblical nonsense should be exposed for the absolute hogwash it really is. The concept of the Abrahamic God was invented as a way to keep order and live peacefully within your tribes and villages . Later on this evolved into what we now know as laws within our jurisdictions. It's served its original purpose
And now, that we are enlightened, time to get it OUT.

Nope.

…that’s no moon…
Religion didn't stop children going up chimneys . They blessed them. Great help for the kids.
That's not the case. It was Lord Shaftesbury on Christian principles who mainly campaigned to get the kids out. Wasn't atheists doing it. why would they?
