As an American I find it very hard to wrap my head around the fractional currency that the UK used. You switched to decimal in 1971, while the US went decimal as soon as we started minting coins after the revolution.
My favorite world coin is a British coin… sort of. It’s a French Emperor Napoleon III penny sized coin that was apparently commonly circulated in the UK at the time. It’s counter stamped with Pears’ Soap on the obverse. It’s a soap advertisement coin, apparently it was illegal to deface British currency at the time so the Pears’ Soap Co used French coins to advertise. I got it in a box of foreign coins at a yard sale 😂
Not only does the US have a massive population to supply coins to compared to the UK, but we also have a massive geographical area to supply coins to. Sometimes it was easier to set up a mint in a new location (like the western US,) than it was to try and ship coins to the west coast. Until 1869 you would have had to ship coins all the way around the horn of South America to get coins to California, or cross a literal sea of grass and two massive mountain ranges.

Yes the pre decimal system was a bit convoluted! Your favourite world coin sounds amazing! -CC

Love the gold coins yet i don`t buy them, they are nice to look at. I like the Austrian one. I have a 20 Francs coin made from gold from France. It is from 1959.

For a newbie I'd stay away from eBay etc and stick to a reputable dealer as gold is expensive and so people like to counterfeit them
