I went to the mexican grocer to get some of these for fajitas, and the guy in line behind me was excited to see a white kid buying them and asked me how I was planning on cooking them. He approved of my "cast iron skillet" response.
Add salt and lime to it 😃👍
My dad moved to California from Texas in the 60s. No one had any fajitas at the grocery stores. So he asked to speak to the butcher and a couple of Mexicans came out from the back. He got some fajitas that day.
TheENofficial yes it's really good with chorizo tacos
@TheENofficial yeah it’s real and very common in México
@TheENofficial it's delicious if you know to prepare them.
"It's kind of like making smores but you know, not smores."

The best way to describe the taste of the prickly pear is just like green beans.
The texture is also like green beans when cooked soft with butter, garlic, salt n pepper.
Don't you mean the Nopal, instead of the prickly pear? The prickly pear is the fruit that grows out of the cacti, isn't it?
@@PsychedelicSkull that's something that I was wondering too, like the pear is the tuna the fruit, not the leaves.
@@PsychedelicSkull the cactus itself is referred to as a “prickly pear cactus.” In Mexico the call them nopales. But yes, the actually fruit that grows on it is called the pear or tuna. Both parts ate edible and very nutritious.

WOW.... cool vid. Yeah I eat em also . Boil them let em cool off and store em in the fridge so you can enjoy them anyway you can. You can also make a Cactus salad too.
Really appreciated your honesty.
You know quarantine hits hard when you're watching of a guy cooking a plant with a lot of spike in it
Not going to lie but grilled and picked it tasted great. Cut up mixed fresh spinach and feta cheese salad. Great with grilled rabbit and steak or if veggie Stuff baked . Nice with potatoes and carrots or sweet potatoes 👌 grilled picked
I imagine it tasts like courgette or something?
but what about using it for moisture or water if you need it?

Thank You For The Cactus It Was VERY Painful👍😊
Cactus, as far as i know, is a plant. plants aren't able to feel pain
desert survival food uses salt and spices ?
Christoper Lim 99% of ppl eating this are "surviving" at the breakfast table.
well if youre an outdoorsman, you'll quickly learn to carry a few spices in your pack, whether cooking cactus or roasting a rattlesnake, spices make food more enjoyable. if you dont have any, well just eat the food without any. simple.
They use their own sweat to make salt
Ayo_iitzYeBoiiPotato Gaming shut the hell up my man shut the fuck up
Both salt and spices (barks, herbs, roots) originate in salt lake, desert and wilderness areas so why not? You probably meant using the shakers for it much like using a grill rack and knife isn't at all primitive forms of cooking.... should have used a rock and a huge bone right?
the less thorns in your finger, the happier youll be
wise words spoken by a wise man
Now I already know that this will be useful for me a Texan because there are so many cacti around
Thank you!
Great video brother! Let's see some friction fire and more desert food!

I, too, live in the desert (SoCal). I am very interested in everything related to desert survival.
Mmm thank you for including the nutritional contents, I was curious about that
his face expressions says it all ! lol
I saw a video where a woman uses cactus like you do but she was bit by a copperhead and used the pads to draw out the venom. Her husband was bit 2 years before and she saw what happened at the hospital and thought if it happened to her she would try the old way. Apparently after the bite, he went out and collected the pads. Fired the needles off, split the pads and she taped them to her foot in an area larger than the bite. She rested and changed the pads every 8 hours, the pain was terrible the first 24 hours but started getting better after that. By the third day she could walk on the foot and it didn’t take too long to be healed. This sounds risky so I’m just posting it in case someone can’t get to emergency and can get nopal. Oh, don’t forget the Elmer’s glue just in case.
hhmm, im not sure if theres enough scientific evidence to suggest that would be a reliable cure for a snake bite
Junkyard Fox True, it would be a last resort for me.
I live in Southeast Texas. And I went to a Mexican restaurant and had cactus and eggs that's how I learned those were actually Edible
Finally, the knowledge that we all wanted to know.
If it's a survival situation we wouldn't have a knife or a grill
i carry these things on me every single day. now if you dont have them, feel free to improvise: a sharp jagged rock or piece of glass can be your sutting tool. if you dont have a grill, jsut place it on some sticks over the fire. thanks for watching, be sure to watch our other videos for more info and adventures.
How would you not have a knife? Everyone has access to a knife either in their house or a survival knife.
Never trust a man who doesn't carry a knife.
I love nopales, my mother cuts off all the thorns on the first layer and we heat it on a pan with salt.

I tasted nopales for the first time ever in a local Mexican restaurant. I enjoyed it; and now I believe, I'm going to be ordering some more. I'm vegan, so in lieu of meat in my veggie fajitas! What did you say about something makes a container in stone boiling water?
yeah, you can turn a large cactus pad into a drinking container. check it out ua-cam.com/video/lrAIz15ws8o/v-deo.html
I really like nopales, but my experience has been only with the stuff you can buy in a jar or that they give you along with some salad in Mexican restaurants. They must be a little bit pickled. At any rate, I just looked up the nutritional value of nopales, and they are quite high in potassium, vitamin C, fiber and other nutrients. Who knew? Thx for the very interesting vid. I'd like some more info about that knife also. Looks like it has a micarta handle.
cool information. If I can be a bit helpful, might you mention that the wood you choose to burn should be natural, and not from lumber. Reason: Lumber is treated and fumes given off can get in your food and be toxic = use natural sticks and such..
Who and why the fuck would somebody try to bbq with some 2 by 4s?
I grilled up a couple of these in the summer and in my experience nopal is very forgiving. Blast it with heat on the grill and most of the thorns burn off by themselves with enough cooking time, and it becomes very tender and charred with a long cooking time.
That’s an awfully hot coffee pot.
Fire is hot
I'm gonna go walk the block with gloves on and pick any that have grown out of a neighbor's yard ;) I'm in Texas
Just ask your neighbours for some the nopal grows really fast and sprouts new leafs every few days if it’s properly watered I bet they get more than enough XD we get about 2 lb every 3 weeks or so I get tired of them so sometimes I don’t cut them but then I have to trim the plant often to keep it from growing too high or from breaking due to the weight. Also the leafs you cut if you plant it on the ground it will most likely grow you a plant I cut a few and one was left on the dirt couple of weeks later it had sprouts now it’s about 3 feet tall.
No cacti were harmed in the making of this video
When you make nopales, it's important to cook the slime away. If it's undercooked, it's kind of slimy and I don't like it. It has an acidic taste. It's kind of like an acidic green bean. Mexicans love to roast nopales and cebollines on the grill for their carne asadas. Está chingón, you know?
Yeah i will definitely find a grill and a knife in “survival situations”
Nopales are good.
The music.... is my schools lockdown music
ANOTHER ONE OF THESE
I mean I’m not complaining doh
what if you didn't have a knife....
Use a rock preferably flat with a decent edge
Why would you be in the middle of the desert without a knife?
I cut it with my hands just be carefull
starve.
nah just sharpen a rock..
@@Jackle61 Is the purpose of a survival video for planned survival situations? I'd think the opposite..

I just realized, as salt makes non-sweet foods more delicious, if I were in a survival situation, I should probably have a salt shaker with me if possible to be able to eat non-delicious food
Yeah if ur going out into the middle of nowhere u usually have a survival kit? that includes lots of stuff like first aid, distress signals, and sometimes a salt shaker.
salt makes everything better sweet stuff also alot of desserts have salt in them and it goes especially well with chocolate. As a matter of fact my favorite chocolate has himalayan salt in it.

Drink cactus juice. It'll quench ya! Nothing's quenchier. It's the quenchiest!
Well if you drink to much cactus juice is really high in alkalis which if you comsume to much of it it will make you have headaches and vomit so I think the quenchiest is water

Oh my lord, you are SO right about those hair like spines! I had gotten a prickly pear and I ate it, I didn’t realize it had those small spines. WEEKS later, they were still in my skin and they had hurt so bad! They were in between my fingers, and my hands, and every time I moved my fingers I felt a sharp pain, and I couldn’t see what was in my skin.
xDead Dolly , Trick for prickly pears is to run a flame over em before plucking them from the plant. My mother taught me that 60 years ago. Wed gather 5 gallon buckets of them & make jams. Pretty much the same for any cactus. Small propane torch works great but any flame will do.

They are very good when young.
This cactus used to be very common in Australia too, however being an introduced species it quickly became invasive. The cactoblastis moth was introduced from South America and it pretty much wiped them out. Unfortunately that means one less available food source in Australia’s vast desert regions.
In México this kind of cactus are called "nopales", so delicious!
in Australia there called prickly pears and its only the yellow fruit people eat but im going to try the leaves now. you know in my grand mothers time they had these plants but nobody new you could eat the leaves ..things were hard then no shops no welfare so they would grow onions and store then for hard time then eat boiled onions with white sauce ( flower and water ) for weeks or even months ..im thinking if they new about this cactus life would have been a lot better
