An exceptional display and utilization of available resources. Fly it like there is no tomorrow. Great Work GS. I am of the opinion that the Tomcat was everything Admiral Thomas F. Connolly hoped it would be.
Certainly wouldn't be able to do the down on the deck rate fight we see in so many videos, and would make defending Fox 3's more interesting as well as going down low would put you in the MANPADS engagement envelope.
A Super Tomcat 21 with fly by wire diff thrust, strengthend flaps, retaining the wing sweep, an internal bay for missiles, updated engines, and some stealth would have absolutely dominated.
As cool as this would be, I feel like at that point it's practically a different aircraft altogether lol, even if it retained the airframe and wingsweep
@@wolterbalthazar5739yes and no… take the M-16 vs M-4 rifles for example. Not everything is interchangeable but it’s still the same platform concept just with different modifications.

I want to see Max Afterburner analyzing this video cause I want to hear what he would do in both scenarios even though he hasn't fly an F14 like Tom Cruise, but just his knowledge of how fighters respond on certain maneuvers in RL vs DCS can make you gauge how close DCS is to RL
In fact, for the Flanker, the F-14 is a small fish. To confront the F-14, the capabilities of the MiG-23 Flogger and MiG-25 Foxbat were enough. But on the F-15, which turned out to be an excellent fighter at that time, the "teeth" of the Flogger were no longer enough. Therefore, the Flanker was created as a worthy answer to the F-15. Anything is possible in DCS.
Debatable. The F14D (With the APN-71 radar and the Aim54C would have been able to wipe the floor with Floggers, I'm pretty sure an F14B could have been able to deal with that) For the Foxbat, I would still say the F14 comes out on top. Sure, the Flogger has the speed but I'm just not sure. Smart flying by the tomcat crews could make all the difference.
in round one it looks like the pilot was not killed buy your gun run. Because when you fired your fox 2s I noticed that he started flaring. Fun video as always
I think it fits. It’s a large twin engine fighter with great range and heavy payload. Granted the F-14 is dramatically different than the Flanker in many ways, but the basics are similar. Same with the F-15. They were the Thicc fighters of the 80s and 90s. They can represent each other as aggressors very well.
Like the f-15 the tomcat was worthy of continued development. Had they moved a little faster it would quite possibly have been a lot more D models and maybe some of the multi-role variance that were being discussed. It's not even completely impossible that there might have been a follow-on version as we see with the f-15ex
I'm fairly certain the Crew Chief would rather get back a broken bird to fix than have no bird at all to work on. And the F-14 dances pretty good for a big girl! 😉
Dude, it’s not the jet, it’s you. It’s your SA, instinct, knowledge, skill and knowing how to be a sneaky bastard. I have watched almost all your videos and that’s the common denominator. Like going up against an F15EX and almost killing it. Most of us mere mortals would have been cooked in the first 10 minutes. You took it to the merge and was one shot away from beating it. You are a beast!
Amazing! I’d love to see you put the extra challenge of not jamming flaps down on yourself. I’ve heard that flaps down was a move that only best would use, and they would be able to avoid the jamming.
I think this might be one of your most gripping videos to date. It is just wild to see the Tomcat hold its own against the Flanker when on paper it has such a huge disadvantage.
Something I think you are missing GS is that your merges with flaps broken are occurring at .5M or a tad below corner speed while your flaps up merges are all .85+. Merging between .5 and .6 M already allows you to turn ridiculously tight to jam wez's.
Yo GS, your cat driving skills are mental. Some of the best DCS flying with an aircraft ahead of its time. Great content. Keep it up. Have a pleasant day. Cheers.
Yea, for it was written; When thy throttles are split, with boards down and thy wings swept thusly, all shall perish in his path; for Iceman and Jester are as one, and none shall rate as thy Tomcat; for the Tomcat's domain is both one circle and two. All praise the Tomcat.
Like the Super Tomcat 22 that pilotphotog had a video about a few months back. A 5th generation Tomcat, with stealth, supercruise, and internal weapons.
That was phenomenal! Heart pounding action and you got me yelling a few expletives. I've heard that one risk with over G'ing the aircraft is that it can cause weapons systems to malfunction. But at least you get a chance to take the shot; Round 4 shows the alternative. Amazing video, and amazing flying skills! This was one of my favorites!
I'm not so sure about the flaps down issue. I was listening to old Tomcat guys on either the Tomcast podcast or The Fighter Pilot podcast talk about how effective the tomcat was with flaps down. He didn't seem to have a problem using them.
I've seen in other videos that you don't have to manually drop the flaps, breaking the Tomcat in order to win a dogfight. You only need to do that if you want to fly one-circle, the same way you fly the Flanker or Fulcrum. If you play to the Tomcat's strengths and fly 2-circle the Tomcat would win often, especially in prolonged fights.
The Tomcat is a truly impressive airframe when it's not being maintained constantly. It's such a shame variable wings are just not worth the investment because they just capture that "too cool for school" vibe.
8:53 - GS: "If you're going to survive the dogfight you're going to have to fight the best that the aircraft can fight. Right?" Yeah, and you're going to have to blindfold, gag, and tie Jester in his seat to keep him from punching out early.
Since I've thought about it, you really don't shoot an enemy plane apart with the gun. You never really get "gun kills" unless it's a pilot, engine, or flight controls hit or maybe vertical stabs. You only have to hit a wing or elevator enough times to structurally weaken it and since most of the time they're pulling hard maneuvers the wings are already at the limit almost all those kills where a wing comes off are from the aircraft maneuvering under high G. So if it's a Flanker, F-18, or F-16 take as many potshots of opportunity as possible because if one or two lucky shells hit a spar the next Cobra or 9-G turn they try to pull they're gonna rip their own wings off.
I served in the Navy in the 80's when Tom Cruise made the movie Top Gun, and the Tomcat was an amazing aircraft to watch. When I came home from my time in the service and the F/A-18 Hornet was going out into the fleet, I said, "A... what? What's a Hornet?"
@Mike Romeo yes. Even with its limited computing power and capabilities it was supposed to be impressive. Imagine what it would have been like with a modern system.

I don't play this, want to but for now just enjoy GS's videos. I believe that was the round he said he wasn't going to override flaps and manual wing sweep. So my guess is they sweep automatically without that based on speed (low speed out, high speed in)

To be fair when you're missing both wings, sometimes it's hard to get an upward trajectory
