Below 30nm and under 5,000ft you need to turn off the lofting ability. The missile will lose sight of the target trying to climb and I think it's continuing previous course when it had lock. RIO has a switch on the left vertical knee panel (forgot technical name) that flips between normal, Phoenix no-loft, and sparrow something-something (maybe no-loft). Under 15nm you might as well go ACM with it, as it comes hot off the rail and forgoes loft and has the ability to reach out that far under self-guidance. Logging on the deck just forces it to climb too steep to be worthwhile and targets too close get lost immediately.
The DCS AIM-54 is reaching speeds of mach 3.5 to 4, not mach 5, last time I checked. The backward arc I believe is because of the assisted loft. The recommendation was to keep the plane level while launching at distance. There have been good videos discussing the speed and U turn after launch.
aw, that's a shame since the real phoenix(reportedly, ESPECIALLY the a model) hit Mach 5 easily, the later models it seems hit mach 4 more often But the pheonix at mach 5, counts as a hypersonic missile technically
@@archer1133 That's correct. The Charlie varient of the Phoenix was slower, but at the "published" speed of MACH 3. 5, it was considered far superior due to its increased range, thanks to F-14D's better radar array, and Phoenix C's superior seeker.

Similar system to AIM-54A was used on Soviet SAM S-200 (SA-5). It had range of over 200km. In the initial phase, it would use semi-active radar homing and in terminal phase it would use its own radar. But that is one very long warning for the target. So this system never performed well against fighter planes. On the other hand, it was designed to take out US nuclear capable bombers before they reach the target, so no surprise there...

Before I watch the video, thank you for an "Axehead" vs. Phoenix video. I knew it was gonna come down to the merge though and I was interested to see how you fared against the Flanker and what kind of trickery you might try to pull in the guns fight. Not much hope for the tomcat there. It was definitely interesting in the long range bvr fight too. The Tomcat probably has the more powerful radar (it's one of the biggest and most powerful ever put on a fighter) but it's outdated and requires skill from your RIO whereas the Sukhoi has a more modern and less hands on system. I'm also guessing the sparrows and sidewinders are modeled after older versions too.
Its actually a tactic I use often to lock someone and then not fire if they defend. I just leave them locked for a few seconds and see if they react. If they defend, cool no need to fire. Sometimes they start to ignore the lock and then you can nail them.
