Thank you for the video. It was a tremendous help.
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
Thanks for this video. Great Work! My steering rack on my 06 WRX is leaking through one of the boots. This video might convince me to do the rebuild instead of buying a whole new rack and pinion...
Thanks, it's really not hard if you have the patience. One thing I got backwards in the video is the tensioner on the rack goes in after you install the pinion gear. I had those two steps backwards and it worked fine but it could cause damage to the lower pinion seal.
This is incredibly helpful. My steering rack needs replacement and I might as well upgrade to an STi unit
Glad it helped you, thanks for watching.
Thank you for this. I have the pinion seal assy on order because mine is leaking. I'm just going to replace that. Not do a rebuild. I like that DIY jig!
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching.
Thank you for this and the part numbers. my 06 power steering dying and i dont want to get the whole thing
Glad it helped.
I believe the part number for the weird cap is 34123AE001. Replaces the old part number no longer available
Looks like the right part, as long as the threads are the same. Thanks.
I am about to give up on my steering rack😢 . You made it look easy. Mine is seized everywhere. From the inner and outter tie rods. They just wont come off. Think i am just gonna get a reman unit.
Focus on the inner tie rod to the rack. Turn the rack so it has one tie rod fully extended from the housing. Some have a lock washer that is bent over the tie rod to hold it. If there is one, you need to straighten it as much as possible. Then, gently use some heat to expand the rack side and soften the locktite. If you're still struggling, spray in some wd-40 or similar a few times as it cools down and try again. You can do it.
Nice video. Clear and informative. Looks like you went heavy on the grease on the pinion. I didnt see that much grease when you disassembled. How is it holding up?
Still going strong. Unfortunately, I don't get to drive it much since it has gone to college with my kid.
Ughhh need to get mine rebuild since I’m also installing a Chase Bays power steering line kit. Plus Whiteline bushings. But rather have a shop do it. Way to many steps and I’ll know I’ll mess something up lol
Not many shops will rebuild racks, most don't have the knowledge to do it anymore.
Thanks for the video! One thing, did you end up with an extra o-ring (large) from one of the kits? I have a feeling it is not needed, but wanted to get your thoughts (it’s not the o-ring that seals the threaded piece you need the pin wrench for)
The main shaft is two pieces threaded together. I didn't separate those so I didn't need to replace that o-ring.
replaced the hose line with the part number that ends in 60 because it was leaking. the new one i had replaced it with has the car working and able to drive again but it’s still leaking a bit..
They can be frustrating at times.
So there is no rack bushing on the driver side? The silver thing that you removed when pulling the rack from the passenger side.
The drivers side, or the pinion side since it varies from right to left hand drive, has two pressed in bushings. The other side has a bushing that wraps around the shaft and secured with a strap.
I’ll be doing the same shortly. Three months later, how is it holding up? Any leaking seals?
Everything is holding just fine.
Please is it competabilty to subarue impreza b3 2009
You may need to reuse the hard lines from your old rack and figure out the bushings to make it bolt up but yes, it will fit.
Hey why would my passenger side rack n pinion shaft have play
Sounds like a bad tie rod, inner or outer will give you play.
No matter how hard i hit the rack from the drivers side it won't slide out of the outer housing. It feels like its hitting up against something inside the housing. Im thinking should i separate the 2 pieces of the housing ?.
Did you remove the pinion gear that attaches to the steering column?
@@DIYEVERYTHING yes . I think its the seal on the passenger side that goes behind 38 mm end nut. I'll try and drill it out or dig it out somehow
This has to be a pretty similar process to a forester non turbo aye?
They are all pretty similar, just the parts would be different.
Its basically thr same rack.
How much did everything cost you for the rebuild?
Not counting the rack since this may vary widely, less than $150 USD.
Thought i was the first viewer 😢🤣
So close 😆
Rack is leaking on my 2017 sti with only 75k. Going to cost $1700 from the Subaru dealership. 😢
Ouch
