The reason they're flopping around on the floors, furniture and you is probably because they can't find any natural perches in your house. Swallows are very distinct birds because they have extremely small legs, which helps make them more aerodynamic, but it means they can't stand on flat ground like other birds, and they have very limited perching options.
aVeryIntelligentDog They are not swallows, they are swifts and they can not stand on their legs, that's why some are flopped on the floor. They cling to masonry walls, which is why they look for chimneys made of brick or masonry to build their nests, (one nest per chimney). They spend most of their waking hours gliding in the air in groups eating bugs. They only cling to walls at night when they roost. Just saying...
Great video. As a "swift dad," that's fantastic you had so many. I'm sad they went into your house, but they probably didn't do that on their own. I'm building a new house with a huge, uncapped chimney to try to get them again. My wife and I love them. They are really talkative and friendly as well. They looked scared as hell in your house. I hope you let them in your chimney, again.
I feel bad for those swifts. Swifts literally live in the air.. they feed, drink, copulate, and will even sleep while flying. They can't walk or move on the ground because their feet are extremely small and short, so they have to cling onto vertical surfaces. They can't go on the ground. The only time one would find one on the ground is a dead one or a bird struggling to fly again. Basically if a swift reaches the ground, it's gone.
Also to get them out, turn off the lights, open the door and stand outside with a flashlight, they will fly out. If you keep your flue closed, they will happily nest inside the chimney and you will never be bothered. They are very clean birds and they eat millions of insects every day. Keeps the bug population down during the summer.
+Adrienne Damsky Yup. I have swifts and try to get them back every year. I love these birds! And they love to talk, especially the babies. Ha ha. I'm building a new house with a huge, uncapped chimney so I can try to get them, again. Such friendly, nice birds.
Look at them it's so adorable it's not doing anything look at them this is adorable I like a bird he's not doing anything he's not going to hurt you in my life
They look like Chimney Swifts. If you left your chimney open they'd get in through there. Were you able to catch them and let them go? A butterfly net would work well and you can get them out one at a time that way. I have had a pesky wren get in once that I had to release three times into the wild. I have a video about that. He was a persistent little guy.
+Thagirion9 I love swifts. The only reason they got in this guy's house is because he opened the fireplace when he didn't need it. I have them and love them. They're awesome birds. I'm building a new house and purposely building a big chimney without a cap again, hoping to have more. They're like house guests that eat a ton of bugs and love to talk.
fishelfinder I'm glad to hear you like them too. That sounds great. Yes they'd love to eat all the bugs in your area so that's a good thing. There are tree swallows in my area and the congregate in large numbers of fields.
Hmm. Do you have any green pigs that could have drawn them down your chimney? Put them outside. If I understand correctly, they will fly towards it. If that doesn't work, I'm stumped. It's all I know.
Through the chimney. Chimney Swifts will nest in chimneys but if the fireplace is open they may go explore the house. Very rarely do they nest inside the house though.
how does one exactly "literally walks into a house"? can you figuratively walk into a house? like literally, one of the most annoying words ever, like I'm so mad right now that I can't even...

Swifts can't perch on the ground. Once they reach it, they struggle to death trying to get back on their wings.
