I forgot how important down time is. We as a family feel so much more rejuvenated when we spend the weekend doing the bare minimum, jumping in the trampoline, going to church, reading books, and RESTING!
This is so key and undervalued in our culture. I’m 38 with three children, and I just realized THIS YEAR that “fun” and “rest” are two different things, and we need BOTH!
I prefer the olden days when there’s no stores open on Sundays and it’s always quiet. Also, need to cut back on activities and commitments during the week.
I have always been underweight and health focussed, but quitting sugar in 2023 was the best decision ever. After the first month of withdrawals, I cannot believe the improvements in clarity, attention and mood. And it leads to less snacking! Now to work on reducing worrying and comparisons. Great goals!
@@pnwflipper2089 it was a bit brutal! I'm breastfeeding as well but busy chasing three small children around and working part time so it was a helpful distraction. I ate lots of salt and fat the first month. After that I have found I don't get as hungry and can easily stretch between meals and have a 14 hour overnight fast.
@@walanglovelife8862 it wasn't my intention but I lost about 6 kgs. I'm trying to gain weight now but find i actually need to eat past the point of hunger to do so.
Cutting out judgment of others is what I am focusing on. I notice a judgment and wonder why or where it is coming from. It has become a way of getting to know myself better and also to realize that I am not the person I want to be sometimes. It is hard! But I always feel better when I at least question it. Thank you for the reminder that letting things go can be positive.

Great list!! Thanks. One that I would add is cooking & freezing meals. I have only 6 meals that I cook in large amounts, and then freeze in smaller portions. This is enough for 6 days, plus on the 7th day I eat a sandwich and/or soup. I always have enough frozen meals to last about 1 month. I only cook my favorites, so I enjoy everything. This plan simplifies buying groceries.
I can attest to cutting out social media, caffeine, sugar and relationships and despite owning two televisions still, I never use them. The decluttering of physical or digital items is super easy in comparison. I am on the more extreme side but even my little kitchen has empty spaces. As does the under stair storage, the shelf in the bathroom and the 2 bookcases I basically don't really need at this point but are too bulky/what if, to sell. Me and my toddler live in a 1 bedroom flat which has views of the sea and has a patch of green on the outside. Our neighbours are decent and we share a small garden out front and back. The shape and layout of the home is awkward, probably the most annoying part of it all, but its size is otherwise perfect and cheap as its a council house, that I won't ever want to leave and thanks to minimalism/transforming furniture, I don't ever have too, even as my son turns into a teenager or an adult.
What you carry with you... I've learned that 'purse clutter' weighed me down. I have a beautiful box near the door. It holds of the 'what ifs' I may need when leaving the house. I contemplate this as I am about to walk out the door. Most days, I only need what I can fit in my pocket. It has been so freeing. I have a Chico reusable bag that has made my shopping mindful and minimal. It clips to my keychain, beltloop or waterbottle:)
I live in Chico, California, where the Chico Bag was created. Great company! I take the bags with me as hostess gifts when I travel. They weigh almost nothing, take up almost no room, won't break, cost little, and are a versatile gift.
@@mscatnipper2359I just discovered Chicobags last month and shipped them 15 reusable shopping bags I didn’t want going to a landfill. What a great idea and company!
All of this has been such a must for me. For my mental health. Coming from an abusive and controlling background, decision making is a difficult thing. Didn’t take much at all to throw me into decision fatigue multiple times a day most every day. Knocking out so many of these “extra” things really did help me be able to save my very weak decision making muscles for things that matter way more than things like what to wear, what to cook/eat and so on. Same goes for saving energy with more simple chores, to do lists and activities. Although as a single older person, getting out more is still a must. You can’t let yourself just waste away alone all the time. You don’t want to wind up feeling like life is more or less solitary confinement. It’s all fine and dandy to stay home a lot when you have any kind of decent companionship, but that’s really an entirely diff animal when it comes to living alone.
A friend once said, "The less said the better," regarding sharing something I was going through with others. I've noticed that it is the wise thing to do pretty often.
Thank you Joshua! Great advice. I stopped social media during Covid and I don’t miss it anymore. I’m focus on getting out debt, taking online courses, and minimalism. Still working on minimalism. 😂
speaking less, listening more - that's a good goal for me! Compare, despair is something I need to remind myself of. I cut back on news channels. I have the verse from Luke where Jesus says do not worry. thanks & I'll have a listen again to this.
I use to avoid going into my kitchen because I didn’t want to dig through the utensil drawers and pot/pan cupboards to find what I needed. After digging through all of that, I was too exhausted to contemplate actual cooking. 😩 BTW, this is the best channel on UA-cam!

Thank you, Joshua. I've written each of these down, contemplating the top three to put into motion today. I believe commitments is going to be the most productive subtraction I will experience- thank you.
Brilliant! I have done some of them, struggle with a couple and didn’t need to do most of them. Love my life as I see minimalism as a way of prioritize the grateful life as I like to call it! It is not just about minimizing it is also about maximizing. Maximizing your gratitude and love for others. If you are grateful for what you have you don’t need to buy more. You don’t need to show off with a big house, a fancy car or anything material. If you are grateful for the people in your life that love you for who you are then you don’t need to show off, just love them back. If you are genuinely grateful for who you are then you don’t need to show off. You can focus on the inside. Your health, your mental state and work hard on beeing kind, loving back and beeing grateful for the life you are given! So I think that everything starts and ends with gratitude.
I have been watching you since the global lockdown due to the covid 19 pandemic. And most of the things you mentioned I have been slowly subtracting from my house. It’s very liberating! I have a dream though: to downsize and transfer to a smaller house Because from my experience, I realized that a bigger house entails more spaces to clean, more time and more Money to maintain its upkeep, and yes more things to declutter. I hope that we can do that in the near future.
I told my sisters to come over is there sa😮nything they want if something should happen to me. It's so sad to hear of older people fighting when someone dies. Just take the stuff now. Less for me to deal with.

Thankfully, much of my life has been minimalized, but 7 of those 30 will help further. I would add books to that list, along with decluttering things from my personal past and things given/left to me that I never use or look at. I do have a lot of CDs and DVDs, but 10 years ago I recycled the cases and put the discs in compact carriers, and that really helps.
Simplifying cleaning products- make most myself now. Much cheaper, just as effective. Much less harmful to health and environment and better for our allergies too. It also cuts the need for us to go near a store when we run out as we have the things on hand to make up more
I’m guilty of having too much salt and gadgets. This list I had to write down. It’s just so important. I actually went back to this video with the intention to write it down. Thanks for this, Joshua!

Hobbies is a really good one. I used to do so many sports and do so many things in my free time that it gave me a ton of stress and anxiety. So one day I stared to think what do I love doing the most. I came up with top 3 hobbies and basically gave up and sold things related to other hobbies. Have worked out really well for me.
Using native plants in your garden saves time and work because they are evolved to suit the environment you are in and so less require effort to maintain. Native plants are also better for and help support the little critters - birds and helpful insects...
All of these are brilliant, however do not forget digital clutter, takes up space on our devices, at the back of our minds, in our cloud storage subscriptions etc and if not well categorised can quickly get out of hand and feel overwhelming 😉
Physical books. I have books and also a Kindle and a library card. I'm trying to read my physical books and pass the ones on that I don't wish to keep as references.

Even big fat unnecessary parties, instead use that money to serve the needy people, provide them with necessary food and clothing, my family practises.

Great list!❤
Using native plants in your garden saves time and work because they are evolved to suit the environment you are in and so less require effort to maintain. Native plants are also better for and help support the little critters - birds and helpful insects...
Perfect
Thank you so much from india
I subtracted all animal products from my life and became vegan. I added empathy and compassion instead. ✌🏻💚

All of these are brilliant, however do not forget digital clutter, takes up space on our devices, at the back of our minds, in our cloud storage subscriptions etc and if not well categorised can quickly get out of hand and feel overwhelming 😉
He mentioned something along those lines. Too many apps on our phones

Stored food. I have so much stored food it looks like I'm preparing for Armageddon.
I have ADHD… my brain is naturally dopamine deficient. It’s always seeking dopamine. I’ve been a minimalist since I was in middle school, way before it was even a thing. I don’t follow rules. I just don’t like stuff, shelving, decorations, too many choices, and I don’t like cluttered spaces. I do like color. I just always considered myself a (Catholic) Taoist.
Watched this twice. Its that good. Subtracting my daily lunch time "doom scrolling" for news.
Even big fat unnecessary parties, instead use that money to serve the needy people, provide them with necessary food and clothing, my family practises.

I want to minimize by furniture and live in an RV or tiny home. I have a large dining room table, china cabinet and server. What I do with it? People do not buy this style of living any more. I welcome suggestions
