Coming from a childhood where nice clothes for me really didn’t happen hand me downs from cousins ( which I loved getting ) and wore out shoes and clothes were a thing …I definitely had a problem with purchasing clothes wardrobe full of items I sometimes never wore …in the last year I have developed a capsule wardrobe decluttering all the clothes I never wore ..this has now spread into other area in my home ..I wouldn’t call myself a minimalist…but a switch has definitely gone off in my brain..think I am on my way to this lifestyle
Take emotion out of purchases. Buy mainly for practicality, need only. Avoid retail therapy, caring what others think. Advertisers are masters of persuasion.
I've been "minding" boxes of books that my kids loved reading when they were little. I have just asked them if they want them. They want one or two specific books. I will now donate all the rest. Thanks for the tip to "tell the story" about items. It will help me to be calm about letting go of items that I have been hanging onto for 20 years, knowing that all of us are now free from these items, but still have lovely memories of them.
I do sleep on bedding on the floor. Not much more than a yoga mat. I actually started doing this for upper back pain, and it really helped. Might not work for everyone. My own brother prefers a soft bed. That works for him.
I'm a time minimalist. The moments of my life are precious to me, so I do buy duplicates of things which are useful to me. For example, I bought 5 fan heaters today. I only ever use one at a time, but I can't be bothered to go to the same shop over the next few years to buy one fan heater at a time.
'Just in case' is the biggest barrier I am working on, I think ditching the old man would help (Only kidding) . I don't buy on impulse, it takes me ages to make a decisions, it drives my husband mad. Another great video, thank you Peter.
Hi Peter, I really enjoy your videos and it is nice to see how you are experimenting with your filming style, The intro was really funny and well made! :D With the black bars it really gave that movie feel. For the parts where you sit in front of the camera, I recommend trying out two things: 1. have the light source come from in front of you, not from the side because this will create shadow on half your face. 2. Have the camera farther back and zoom in on your face for the full frame. I have the impression you have the camera near you and it distorts a bit, like gopros do. E.g. in the bit where you stand next to the painting, the camera is farther away and your face shape is different than in the sitting talking part before. I am no expert in videography, but maybe this could work. :)
Thanks again for that nice video, even if you don't define yourself by external praise ;) One Question: Do you know the origin of that quote "we buy things, we do not need, with money, we do not have, to impress people, we do/may not even like"? I found Alexander von Humboldt (German scientist), but there are quite a lot of people being quoted with that saying.
I laughed at each item wondering where you would show up and in what position 😂
I’m a minimalist and a VERY frugal person but I will never sacrifice my health or the health of others :)
