It's not a coincidence that when i was binging these shows, I was starving myself 😕
Eating disorders aren't just for slender people who starve, people like the ones on the show also have eating disorders.

The sad thing about this is that the dad Steve died a year later from dilated cardiomyopathy. He mentions how he feels when he exercises in the video (chest pain, palpitations etc) which the "motivational" guy puts down to obesity/laziness. But dilated cardiomyopathy isn't generally linked to obesity, most cases are due to infections/toxins/unknown causes. So overlooking those symptoms and putting it down to his size probably contributed to his early death through delayed diagnosis and possibly pushing his heart too far. Of course reducing his weight would put less strain on his heart but this should be done slowly and carefully. It's just tragic to look at this and see that the signs were there :(

Dilated cardiomyopathy CAN be caused by certain infections, but it can also be definitely caused by obesity and high blood pressure. It's disingenuous to say it "isn't generally linked to obesity". A scientific study published in the journal of circulation says "Elevated BMI was associated with an increased risk of being diagnosed with a subsequent cardiomyopathy, especially dilated cardiomyopathy, starting already at mildly elevated body weight, whereas severe obesity entailed an almost 5-fold increase in risk."
@@riseagainphoenix That's fair, I didn't mean to imply that dilated cardiomyopathy isn't linked to obesity but more that he was dismissed by just attributing his pains to obesity and not investigating the underlying pathology. I have also read several studies that obesity is linked to cardiomyopathy, but has no association with the dilated subtype.

as someone who works in healthcare, i can’t stress this enough!! listening to your bodies and getting things like this checked out is so important - especially chest pain in situations like this 😅 losing weight slowly is sometimes more important than getting the weight off asap

I agree!! Making people feel guilty for eating is not the way forward and only leads to eating disorders. I’m still getting over mine bc if people making me feel guilty for eating which people shouldn’t be!! They should be focusing on their health nkt making them feel bad for eating
hope all the people who were featured on the show are doing mostly well nowadays. i know how hard it can be to overcome an eating disorder (and even realizing you may have one is challenging)

Grew up being made to feel guilty every time i ate to the point where i just stopped all together. Im still food avoidant but i go to therapy now and im slowly getting better

She already has one, eating disorders don't just mean starving, overeating is also an eating disorder.
So I’m from Lancashire, last time I was in hospital the lady next to me had a leg removed and was trying her best to convince the doctor she was a healthy BMI and he deadpan said “that would be the case if you had two legs but you do not, you’re still obese” 💀 I honestly almost choked hearing that through the curtain

Grew up being made to feel guilty every time i ate and my weight was constantly commented on at home and at school to the point where i just stopped eating all together. Im still food avoidant but i go to therapy now to undo all the damage done from bullying and the things i was told at home. Its upsetting really that shows like this were normalised because i doubt they ever actually helped anyone

Steve actually died a year later due to diluted cardiomyopathy and he complained in this episode that he had chest pains and shortness of breath when exercising which is a telltale sign but was shrugged off because he was a “fatty”
