The sad thing about this is that the dad Steve died a year later from dilated cardiomyopathy. He mentions how he feels when he exercises in the video (chest pain, palpitations etc) which the "motivational" guy puts down to obesity/laziness. But dilated cardiomyopathy isn't generally linked to obesity, most cases are due to infections/toxins/unknown causes. So overlooking those symptoms and putting it down to his size probably contributed to his early death through delayed diagnosis and possibly pushing his heart too far. Of course reducing his weight would put less strain on his heart but this should be done slowly and carefully. It's just tragic to look at this and see that the signs were there :(
Dilated cardiomyopathy CAN be caused by certain infections, but it can also be definitely caused by obesity and high blood pressure. It's disingenuous to say it "isn't generally linked to obesity". A scientific study published in the journal of circulation says "Elevated BMI was associated with an increased risk of being diagnosed with a subsequent cardiomyopathy, especially dilated cardiomyopathy, starting already at mildly elevated body weight, whereas severe obesity entailed an almost 5-fold increase in risk."
@@riseagainphoenix That's fair, I didn't mean to imply that dilated cardiomyopathy isn't linked to obesity but more that he was dismissed by just attributing his pains to obesity and not investigating the underlying pathology. I have also read several studies that obesity is linked to cardiomyopathy, but has no association with the dilated subtype.
as someone who works in healthcare, i can’t stress this enough!! listening to your bodies and getting things like this checked out is so important - especially chest pain in situations like this 😅 losing weight slowly is sometimes more important than getting the weight off asap
his way of bullying the people he ‘helps’ 100% creates a toxic relationship with food based on humiliation, i can’t see how this could be a positive mindset, peculiar that he would think it would be.
I agree!! Making people feel guilty for eating is not the way forward and only leads to eating disorders. I’m still getting over mine bc if people making me feel guilty for eating which people shouldn’t be!! They should be focusing on their health nkt making them feel bad for eating

Grew up being made to feel guilty every time i ate to the point where i just stopped all together. Im still food avoidant but i go to therapy now and im slowly getting better
The dad, steve, yes he passed away a year after he was on this series. But, when i watched that episode, they did a thorough health check on the couple before they went on to exercising. Even the specialist said that he was already suffering some form of internal damage to his organs. But, his heart was monitored during a walk treadmill test and was found to be capable of doing exercises.

after the episode Steve (radford) put weight back on an died a year later from dilated cardiomyopathy which is a bit sad (I know this cuz I did a presentation on fat families, my school did not like it lol)

26 year old with Dilated Cardiomyopathy here, feeling the need to pour my broken, laggy, obese heart out after seeing that Steve in this died of DCM. I despise the cycle I'm stuck in. When I was 22 I was 2 hours away from death due to my hearts enlargement affecting kidney function resulting in a fluid build-up that seeped into my lungs, I was drowning. I asked my cardiologist several times everyday if this was because I was fat, I IMMEDIATELY thought it had to be that. I wouldn't believe the medical professional that it wasn't my weight. It's genetics in my family as my mums granny had an enlarged heart & now my mum has HF. I lost around 20kg in the year after I was diagnosed & then put it back on. I've had fluctuating suicidal ideation/thoughts (& one attempt) as I've been fat since I was 8 or so...I've BEGGED my Dr's to refer me for inpatient care for my Binge Eating Disorder & I'm re-doing an Outpatient course I did in the past & I'm still at one of the heaviest weights I've been in my life. The presenter can f***ing jog off a cliff & lose some of those extra pounds as his limbs f***ing rupture off him. We're told to get help if we can't stop our eating, we do & we get c***s like this. We go to the Dr's for pains whether it be chest or otherwise & we're told to lost weight & you'll be fine. We either learn how to tune all this out & hope one day everything we're trying will work or we despise the body we have every f***ing day until we can't take it anymore & attempt to/successfully kill ourselves.
As someone who's been binge watching the TLC show My 600lbs Life, I can say that these people aren't that bad in the grand scheme of things. They're mobile, at least
