Orwell shot the Elephant because he did not want to 'lose face' while the Native's were watching. That is what the whole part about not wanting to be "laughed" at was all about. Orwell as a colonial officer has to live up to the role not only of what the British colonialist's expect of him, but also of the oppressed Natives in Burma.
I worked as a uniform security guard in Central Phoenix Arizona and the venom spat at me combined with the evil stares and snide comments was enough to make me question my pursuit of a job in law enforcement. Nothing paints a target on a man's back like a badge and uniform and no one is more hated, even if he is more of a problem solver, than the man who tries to balance the scales of justice on a street level.

I am currently undertaking a Master's Degree in English Literature and I spend most of my time studying. I may consider doing a section of one of the books, I thought about the torture scene in 1984. I enjoy his essays and personal experiences much more than his books. He was a very interesting man, but his world-view was akin to some of the most depressing forecasts for the peak oil crisis. Fortunately, the worst of the catastrophizing, for that is what it was, he thought about and wrote of, has not come to pass. However, to say the least he was looking farther into the future, and into the consequence of human action (both as a moral judgment and otherwise) than most men of his era.
What was the name of the short story that George Orwell wrote, where the people had to wear weights and shackles all the time? For the life of me I can’t remember.
@PurpleGhost Did you not enjoy 'Animal Farm' or '1984'? Orwell's writing is better suited to the essay (I agree), you always feel the essayist wanting to burst through the page in his novels. But Orwell essentially got the three questions of his century right: Imperialism, Fascism and Stalinist Communism were all evil things and he was never afraid to say so.

+princess adeoye It wasn't an official essay, but more of a short autobiography of his time as a police officer in india. I like how orwell did this sort of thing, he wrote several of these over the course of his life, so we can actually see his changes in views and why he changed them.

I enjoyed the story of '1984' (as much as one can, such a bleak potential world), but his writing style was, first very descriptive, then suddenly bare bones narrative; irritating. - I hesitate to say it, but it's a truth that I found his writing in animal farm, to be childish and tempermental. It's like he kept getting bored with writing it, and rushing through segments of time sloppily. --- I agree, he knew his 'isms'.
