  • [ASMR] Shooting An Elephant - George Orwell - Narrated By Jules Burt - Audiobook
    In today's video, I narrate a superb short story as written by George Orwell and published back in 1936. In this story, Orwell recounts the time in Burma when he is forced, against his wishes, into shooting an elephant.
    This is one of my favorite short essays of Orwell's. I do hope you find it interesting, enjoyable and relaxing.

    I have fairly severe ADHD and OCD that quite often makes reading difficult. Audiobooks tend to make completing and retaining the information from literature much easier for me. I don't have to come back and re-read it a million times. I came across this video while searching for an audio version of this essay, as I am needing to write a rhetorical analysis for one of my college courses. I found that many of the readings of this were either difficult to understand, cost money, or were just poorly done. Your voice, cadence, and rhythm is PERFECT for this! I was easily able to listen, follow along, and understand the content. I'm rambling--but just wanted to leave a comment to say thank you. I'm a bit sad to find that you don't have too many more of these readings. I've subscribed in case you do (your other content also looks great, too)! You are helping this wary millennial navigate academia after over a decade from the last time I was in school. I hope this comment brightens your day a bit, because your reading brightened mine! Cheers x

      Thanks very much. That's a lovely comment to read this morning and I'm so glad it's helped. You're right, I've only a handful more of these readings on my channel but it's surprising how people still find just my regular monthly book pick ups relaxing. There's one coming this Sunday that's three plus hours long! Give thst a go, I think you'll enjoy that too. Audiobooks are a funny beast and the UK laws are quite specific, the author has to have been dead for 70 years. So, the rest of Orwell is fine. I'll have a think about some more 🙂

    My first intro to Orwell was as a kid with Animal Farm...a " fun " animal story...later i saw that it was a bitting satire..This is a sad story. Is there some deeper meaning here...? Thanks, your voice did justice to the tale..Kipling is another of my faves

    • @JulesBurt

      Thanks Sylvan, no deeper meaning, just a bit of a sad story but interesting all the same. Just an experiment for a short audiobook, will see how it performs over the next few months,👍

    Fascinating story, thanks for reading this. It makes one think about how many times in life we make decisions not based on what we want to do, or even what we should do, but rather because people expect it of us. Peer pressure can be a very powerful driving force.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks John, it is quite a sad story. Fascinating at the same time and yes a perfect example of what can happen under peer pressure.

      @@JulesBurt It's also interesting to hear about how much we British were hated in that particular corner of our Empire. I wonder if parts of South East Asia realised with hindsight just how benevolent we were compared to the Japanese Empire which conquered and ruled over large parts of Asia during WW2. Once they realised what life was like under brutal Japanese rule I imagine they were begging for us to come back!
