Analyzing the meaning of a particular element presented in a story allows you to dwell into the overall message the author is aiming to portray through his work. The symbolism of a element in writing allows the reader to visualize the worte from a different point of view offering a new perspective to readers as they get the perspective of a particular character.

Then, could you explain why the police officer killed the elephant while both of them represents the Empire? Did Orwell try to emphasize that Imperalism has an destructive effect for even itself?
Hi! Well, it’s highly ironic, because he doesn’t want to. He does it entirely out of peer pressure to preserve the facade of power that is attributed to a representative of the empire. And, yes, at the time Orwell wrote this, the empire was most definitely SELF destructing.
Can you tell me who are "the beasts who were trying to make His job impossible"?
The Burmese.
