@@brucemcbain3150 -- Well put, Bruce. They may have been somewhat overlooked by the general public, but I don't know who would underrate them. This was the first single release after the epic "Lunatic Fringe" and I thought it would be huge. For some reason it wasn't, but I love it and the whole album. The ensuing album, Breaking Curfew, was also fantastic.
Originally, I was disappointed when I heard these songs off Neruda because they aren't like "Lunatic Fringe," but they've grown on me so much. The start of this song is other-worldly. I'm glad to have Neruda in my collection.
i grew up on this kind of music. original alternative rock. every time i revisit this genre, i just remember my teen years and the pure potential. no worries, no failures, no life changing mistakes......yet. i don't live in the past but it's fun to visit once in a blue moon. people have said the 80's were an uneventful time - kind of dead: pre Generation X. many of us happened - came into our own and red rider/ tom cochrane was a huge part of my growth into passionate contribution. thx tom...
Kunsan Air Force Base Korea 1982-83...patrolling the base with Brutus 119lbs of German shepard...with Neruda playing on my little cassette record...best year of my life that i remember 6 months of...good times they were
Amazing music that has never realised it's full potential because in Canada the record companies wait for you to get famous in other countries so they can take credit for your success. Too bad record companies in Canada are small time bullshit. A Great Band like Red Rider should have been playing for thousands.
Surrealism at its finest...I've partaken in many a grand vacation of the mind while this smouldered on my Bose 901s...I'm not sure I've even returned...
If you have this album in your collection ....YOU GET XTRA CREDIT! Please reissue this album so a NEW generation can enjoy what the old generation threw away!
That secret paradise We'd find it again and again She'd roll me like a train On that sunken island We'd run together Where know one dared to dream I can still remember that silken beacon Oh, breakaway
No, it's Jeff Jones. I also saw him play their opening concert in Victoria, BC, for their Neruda tour in 1983. Jeff was playing a really cool "stick" for this. Check out Jeff's site for confirmation.
Neruda is one of the all-time most fantastic musical mindfucks in existence. Try listening to it smoked up on good hash or after dropping a few spots of white clinical acid and you'll appreciate it a thousand times more. A perfect companion for an evening alone with a bottle of Black Velvet, some really good herb, and a room full of black lights and candles.
I think I would like some of that White clinical Acid. That sounds very intriguing! Back in the 70,s all I found was the blotter, which would just tear your stomache apart!
Wow, all I've ever heard from Red Rider was "Lunatic Fringe" I decided to look for more of their tunes, figured they were a one hit wonder with only one very good song, well, I was wrong! :D They kick ass!
@alphacoyote77 RAF Mildenhall. Though I was already a fan of Red Rider, when Neruda came out I was blown away. Truly a masterpiece! Sadly, RR is one of the few great bands I never got to see live.
cletortain that is so beautiful man, so glad you had such an amazing experience. The way you describe it is so picturesque and great. I would have loved to have been there brother. Take Care.
@fierospeedgirl Brother its so great to hear from another cool and very talented person on here. I wish you well man, and us rockers need to support each other and never give in to these plastic karaoke puppets.
Lyrics: "There's a light by the window. And there's a shadow by the sea. And there's an angel or assassin. I know she waits for me. 'There's a time and place', she say, 'where we can meet again'. Well that's alright by me. 'Oh, breakaway', I can always hear her say, 'there's a time and there's a place, where we can always be. Oh, breakaway'. In this secret paradise, we'd find it again and again. And she'd roll me like a train, on that sunken island. We'd run together, where no one would dare to dream. And I can still remember that silken beacon. 'Ah, breakaway', I can always hear her say, 'the world is such a stupid place. We'll crack the sky and get lost in space. Oh, breakaway', I can almost hear her say, 'there's a time and there's a place, where we can always meet again. Oh, breakaway'. 'Breakaway', I can almost hear her say, 'there's a time and there's a place, where we can always be again. Oh, breakaway', I can almost hear her say, 'the world is such a stupid place. We'll crack the sky and get lost in space again. Oh, breakaway'.....".
@fierospeedgirl Nice to know there are other people out there that are not afraid to speak the truth about how Canada has demoted art to a world of nothingness. Yes I remember, Saga made it big and had to leave Canada to become big. I plan on doing the same thing. Keep up your songwriting. Take Care.
So underrated band!!!
Every single song has a piece of “something “ on it.
Love this band.
Underrated? By who? Tremendous album by terrific band.

Burlington Ontario... drinking heavily and snorting some of the finest Peruvian flake Oakville has to offer.
Out in the west here BC it was mushrooms and bush parties under big starry skies in the wilderness.

Personally, I never cared whether they were from Canada, or f#$% Antarctica. I just liked the music.
@hunkahillbilly I spent two years at RAF Lankenheath, K-9 79-81. when were you at Mildenhall?

Yes, its hard to believe Tom Cochrane is 55 now. I believe he now lives in a suburb of Toronto called Oakville, Ontario in Canada.
