  • Happy Birthday to Geddy Lee.
    What can I say? He’s truly one of a kind and my biggest influence, by far, on the bass guitar.
    Gene Simmons got me to pick up the bass. Geezer Butler opened my eyes as to what you could do with a bass. And Geddy has kept me playing all these many years later. I never seem to lose interest in learning, relearning, and playing his bass lines.
    Well, this one caught me unexpectedly. Fortunately, I happen to have a small stockpile of Rush re-dos in the vault. Since this song came in second place in the last “viewer’s choice poll” I thought I’d go with it and hope that you enjoy it. I think that the bass part under the guitar solo is especially tasty.
    The song is “Open Secrets” off of their “Hold Your Fire” album which came out in 1987 and was part of my favorite era of Rush.
    I’m playing the 80’s Spector NS-2A.
    A few other quick nuggets…
    - Earlier this week, on the 27th, was the 33rd anniversary of the release of Madonna’s debut album. You have no idea how close you guys came to getting a cover of “Borderline” but, I just couldn’t bring myself to post it.
    - I’m way behind in responding to comments.
    - I came dangerously close to getting a Wal bass.

    Am I the only one that's amazed at how Geddy Lee writes these intricate bass lines song after song, no matter how obscure? And, then to see how fucking well Troy plays these tunes that shows us how incredibly his style conforms to Geddy's song after song. I mean, fuckin wow. Troy, if I could contribute a vote for best UA-cam bassists, I would. Hands down. Nice work!

    Love to see all the active and passive Rush fans marvel at this "obscure" song. Always a favorite and was humming the bass line in my head when it occurred to me: Troy has probably covered it already. Twice. I clicked on the last one "in my rational point of view" because its probably more polished than the first!

    Loved this cover!! I listened to Hold Your Fire on a Sony Walkman with a 3-band EQ, until the Dolby couldn't cancel out the white noise from excessive play!! I entered Army Basic Training at Ft. Sill, OK in July of 1987, and always remember this track and the others from that time. Happy Birthday Geddy! Loved how smooth the bass is in this song. Besides reaffirming the fact that you are are unbelievably talented, this video also shows that, in order to replicate the way Geddy Lee played live on the most recent tours, you really need to learn songs across their discography. This reminds me of the way that he solos at the end of Leave That Thing Alone during the Time Machine Tour--the phrasing is like a whole different bassist if you only learned the earlier albums before.

    I've totally overlooked this bass line! Wow! Not gonna lie - as much as I love the Geddy Wal bass sound and how it fit together, I always thought HYF and Presto just lacked balls in the guitar and especially the bass. Some of the best songs there are done a disservice, IMO. That Spector's sound is what I feel those albums SHOULD have sounded like. Awesome job, Troy! You make it look effortless, but as anyone knows, Geddy's bass lines are never simple. The 80's era of Rush was by far my favorite time as a fan with Power Windows probably being my favorite album. Great job as usual!

    I remember this being the album that turned me away from Rush for a while, I just didn't dig it at the time, but man, watching you play that line and listening to Alex's guitar part makes me want to revisit this record. Happy B-day to Geddy!

    As with ALL your videos You post onto here Troy.............You RAWK that bass!!! (EVEN IF,you HAD decided to play that ridiculous Madonna song INSTEAD!!! LOL.) So Myself,and everyone ELSE on here,THANKS-YOU DEARLY for deciding to Play THIS ONE instead!!! Haha. Of course,this song,comes off one of my FAVORITE Rush-Albums (Which,for some reason,NOT many Rush-fans seem to enjoy Hold-Your-Fire Songs!?!?) Granted,this isn't my FAVORITE off this album but just watching YOU play it,makes me smile nonetheless!!! :)

    This is one of my favorite Rush songs. The lyrics hit me at a personal level and as a bass player of nearly 40 years, I’m still blown away at this bass line. How difficult was this one for you to finally get down out of all the Rush songs you learned? I’m curious..

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  5 місяців тому

      Yeah, this is a great one. It’s been some time since I’ve heard it. My playing style was most closely aligned with Geddy’s for these two albums- Power Windows and Hold Your Fire. So they came a bit more naturally than a lot of their other material. I listened to the song and it’s pretty straightforward. It gets a bit crazy during the guitar solo though.

    As a kid who loved Yes, Genesis, Rush and Pink Floyd in the mid to late 80s I hated Madonna back then. Now, I'm not too ashamed to say, I'd like to watch your Borderline cover. There a few of her songs I now enjoy. Forgive me? lol

      I agree, I hated Madonna for what she represented back then - total style without substance, but I always thought Borderline was catchy tune. And, I always enjoyed the challenge of learning a good keyboard/sequenced bass line.
      You are forgiven my son.

      @@TJH3113 She had her moments. "Live To Tell" is simply a fantastic vocal performance, and the producers/studio musicians she worked with definitely knew what they were doing.
      Regarding sequenced bass lines, Geddy himself did one for "Scars", of course.

    Wonderful Troy, not sure how I missed this or your Grand Designs video, both with the Spector. They really caught my ear as I'm on the lookout for a Korean Spector among a few other possibilities. But after hearing this, I'm pretty much sold on getting a Spector, probably a new Spector Legend 4 Classic.
    The tone here was wonderful... do you recall if you ran both pups wide open, or did you favor the bridge? (I know these videos were from last year and you may not remember). The sound from the Spector comes quite close to the Wal-era, which has a bit of a nasal honk/growl that I quite like.
    I know that a lot of it is in the hands, but it looks like we have similar right hand techniques. I don't think Geddy played quite as hard back then -- his tone was a lot more tight, clipped, staccato and funky (to my ears, anyway) compared to the looser, harder flamenco stuff from Counterparts on.
    Started playing bass when I was 15 and GUP came out, but it was a year later when Power Windows hit that my right hand developed and grew my index nail like Ged. PW and HYF forever cemented my right hand technique, for good or for bad.
    Thanks again for the great vids Troy!

    Unbelievably fantastic, Troy. What would you suggest I buy as a beginner bass guitar? I may be 47 and starting late, but you've put me over the edge to take it up after this vid!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 років тому

      Aw, thanks a lot. Man, your options are limitless as far as entry level basses go and the lines are really blurred between what is entry level and what is player grade instruments. I'd say to sit down with a bunch and see what feels most comfortable. I understand that, as a beginner, you may not even know what is comfortable or not, but I think you'll be able to get a feel for things. In the store, plug the bass in and play the open strings, one at a time and see how they ring out and sustain. Then play one note at a time on each string all the way up the neck looking for even output and/or dead spots. Take your time. Don't buy for looks.
      With that being said, Ibanez and Squier instruments would be at the top of my list. One bass I've played and would HIGHLY recommend would be the Ibanez Talman. They're quickly gaining in popularity and going up in price but the first generation basses are still out there and very reasonable priced.

    Good cover. I love this song, and album. For someone who likes geddy so much, you sure are such a different player than he is. He has that kinda really nasty very aggressive style of raw playing, and you have that much lighter jazz style of plucking. I like both styles, i just found it interesting how different you are from your favorite bassist.
