The Camera Eye Bass Cover HD

- Boy am I tired. One more day of work, then Lynn and I are off for a week's vacation. We're not going anywhere, just not working will be vacation enough. Normally, I'd be going headlong into Halloween prop making, but we're taking a year off from that and I'm looking forward to just relaxing a bit.
Anyway, I recently re-recorded a couple older Rush classics using the Guild B-301 which I think handles the task fairly nicely. Here's one of them - The Camera Eye off of 1981's "Moving Pictures" album.
As I was getting better acquainted with the bass, I found myself wishing that I had a bit more of a ledge to rest my thumb on. I remembered I still had a clear Zero-Mod thumb-rest in my music drawer and, lo and behold, it nearly fit. The vertical mounting hole lined up perfectly with one of the pick-guard screws and I wasn't bashful about drilling out a small hole for the lateral mount. The thumb-rest stuck out just a bit over the edge of the pick guard so, when I ordered the black rest, Tim was nice enough to file the extra material off for me. Fortunately, he has a B-301 as well so he could see how much had to come off. I love Tim's stuff and, if you haven't checked his site out recently, I thing you should. He's added a bunch of different rests to the list. I'm not an endorsee or anything like that, just a very satisfied customer.

One of their best songs , the entire album is a masterpiece and It's aged very well.
Truth.
Love the bass part during Alex's solo. Gotta be one of Geddy's most well-designed musical feats in my opinion.
In my opinion, you are the best bass player on UA-cam. I've been watching you play for years, and you truly inspired me to become a better bass player and have helped me understand the bass line to songs. You are an incredible, always on target with your playing, and it's truly fascinating. I'm so glad you are still active, and I'm looking forward to seeing you keep playing. Thank you for everything you've done on UA-cam, and I hope you keep it up.
That's very nice of you to say. Thanks you very much.
Yeah! He recreates the music I love and sounds amazing!
I second that
He brings it everytime! Bravo!
Possibly my favorite bass Geddy has ever laid down. And as usual, you do this beautifully. When my wife and I first started getting to know each other, I would play this song in the car, and when Alex started his solo, I said to her "ok, try and pay attention to the bass line here, its crazy!" She feigned interest...haha
Thanks. At least she pretended.
So, how many kids do you have now, if any ?
@@michaelb.42112 2, with number 3 on the way! Shocking, I know
Such a fantastic song. Great job.
Thanks.
One of my all time favourite Rush songs. You play it so beautifully. It's been a few years since I've listened to this song, trying to pick up on the mysterious riff, I listened to a few but could not pick out just one. Can't wait to read where it is. Thanks for sharing and have a great weeks vacation. Cheers
Thanks Constantine. Actually, the mystery riff (or note as it was) turned out to be a figment of my ear-magination. It was at the 6:24 mark where I thought I heard a 3rd added to the riff, but after checking it against the isolated track, I found that it was not there. I like the way it sounds the way I played it though.
My very favourite air drumming song of all time. So many patterns inside patterns inside patterns. Peart was superhuman.
Very cool! Yes, he was.
Man I can spend the whole night watching you play Geddy's lines. You did them all great, don't stop uploading! haha
Thanks.
I don't think I could ever pick my "favorite" Rush song, but this one is in my top 3
Cool.
Such a hopeful if you will song. A song about the city, the energy of it, the movement, the fluidity, the beauty of it all. The mess, and beauty. Chanel No.5 to dog pee on 9th. One of my faves, thank you Troy for this gem.
Thanks for leaving such a great comment!
@@TJH3113 I work in Hells Kitchen, I’ve seen it all
Sweet, my absolute favorite Rush song! I'm seriously in love with that Guild, seems to me like it's your current favorite? Anyway, great job as usual, and I hope you enjoy your vacation!
Right now, it is my favorite. Thanks a lot.
God Lee ...the genius .
Great performance TJ , perfect.
Thanks!
👍👍👍👍
Hope your still rocking in Aug. 2023 !
Still here!
Love, love,love this song. 👍🇺🇸
Awesome!
That’s a helluva tone you’re pulling out of that bass!
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks.
From a bass player to a bass player you nailed all the details of this great tune. Time Signatures are a given in Rush music. I was drawn to this song that I made a time signature chart for those who would me intrested in counting out the metrics.
I

Thanks so much! I hope many people find your comment helpful.
As years pass, it's easy to forget about some of those amazing classics---thanks for the reminder on this one!
It was my pleasure.
DAMN! Totally nailed it!!!! Damn fine playing...WOW!
You da man! Love that song and you nailed it!
Fantastic job as always Troy.
that bass tone is amazing, great cover
That final walk that Geddy does in the last solo rips my soul out of my body every time, and you absolutely slayed it.
Awesome! Thanks.
Awesome work as always. Thank you for sharing your passion.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

Thanks a lot, I'll try.
Great cover, great playing! Enjoy your vacation, Troy.
Thanks a lot.
I used to have a Guild B301. This really makes me wish I still had it.
They are among my favorite basses.
great song. sounds awesome
Thanks.
Not sure what is better. The fact Geddy Lee wrote these amazing bass lines or your ability to play them beautifully.
Probably the fact that Geddy wrote them. Thanks.
Awesome! Great choice of song too!
Thanks.
One of my favorite Rush songs. You are extremely talented, and your skill coupled with real humility is refreshing. Thanks for the example!!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave such a nice comment. I greatly appreciate it.
SO rad, Troy !!!!
Thanks Michael!
One of my new all-time favorite RUSH songs.
Beautiful bass, too, I might add.
Cool and thanks.
My favourite Rush air drum song.
Very Talented. So fluid. Great job.

I love the punchy tone of the B-301. Awesome as usual.
Me too. Thanks.
Very good Job !!!
Thanks a lot!
Awesome. The Guild sounds great. Love your vids
Thank you. The Guilds are among my favorite basses.
Love this song! I have seen it live several times- most recently on the time machine tour in the hills of Northern California and in the "streets of the city" of Boston on the R40 tour
Cool. I saw them do it on the Perm. Waves and Time Machine tours.
Troy your playing on this is awesome and you looked really excited about playing it too. Loves this song. Great job.✌🏻
I should really watch it to see what that might look like... haha. Thanks!
thanks again. my fave rush songs are camera eye and yyz!
Cool.
Enjoy your week!! Tnx again .. The Guild is also sounding great . Yesterday I played on my Rick (1970) on my ampeg SVT 3PRO .... boy oh boy....
Thanks a lot. Enjoy yourself as well.
Great Job, Troy! Love the tone of that Guild. Listening to you play it more, it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite basses.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks.
@@TJH3113 I’m not trying to be the crazy compliment guy, but, I gotta say, I think you really deserve all the praise people are giving you. You’re really good.
Another expertly performed track, well done my friend!!! Beautiful Guild! Always surprised more bass players don't embrace them!!!
Thanks a lot! The Guilds are among my favorites.
Great job sir. And thanks for the camera angle, no need for tabs!
Thanks so much.
no bass player here but love watching you and hearing the bass so prominent listening to my favorite band...
Thanks for stopping by.
You had me at "Guild"
Haha!
Cool performance!👍
Thank you.
New audio is awesome! And after 6 years you look a little more comfortable too. I'm not a guitar player, but I imagine that you can never snooze on a song like this. Nice share!
Thanks. Maybe in another 6 I'll start looking at the camera. Thanks again.
As usual Troy. That kicked ass
Thanks a lot.
Awesome,! it's seems to be so easy!
Thanks. It's not.
outstanding my friend.. Well done
Thank you very much.
BRAVO !!!! 😀 👏
Thank you!
This whole album is a Masterpiece if you ask me
I'm sure many people would agree with you on that.
Great!!!
Thanks!
well done!
Thanks.
As a drummer I am hooked on your bass playing. Especially Rush of course. You really nail this stuff
Thanks so much, Scott!
Great tone man
Thanks, Rick.
Well done mate!
Thanks George!
Awesome! Luv your bass tone, and your finger 'attack' is perfect for this bassline. You skillfully play this! Many compliments for memorizing it, too! 99% of my UA-cam bass video are sight-reading.
Thank you Peter, for watching and taking the time to comment. Ah, my ability to memorize is an example of necessity being the mother of invention.
I went back & looked at the one from 2010, and really liked it. But this one is Dynamite!
The older videos served their purpose but I prefer the sound of the newer ones myself. Thanks.
Imagine if you have to sing it! Awesome job!
Yeah, I'd prefer not to.
Nailed it man. Nice. Geddy is killer.
Thanks.
The beautiful fuzziness
Thanks Mike
Sweet!!
Thanks.
That’s great! Thank you 😊
I’m going to learn to play that
Thank you. It was my pleasure. Go for it!
Getty Lee has a style that I really like and as a beginner between geezer Butler and Getty I really want to make both my starting point and keep exploring from there. I've noticed Gettys style and how he scale's the bass quite a bit in his songs and I think it's a good thing for me to follow and practice to 💯🎸
Both are great early influences. They were my # 2 and 3 after Gene Simmons.
You know troy, you playing that Guild reminds me of another great bass player Kelly Groucutt of ELO who also I'm sure played a Guild and it sounded wonderful on the song "Showdown". no there's a great bass line.I bought Moving Pictures my first album of Rush when I was 12 years old, racing home on my bike I could not wait to listen to it,36 years later I still rate this song right up there amongst the best ever. Great job thanks.
I'm no expert, but I don't recall ever seeing him with a Guild...a Gibson and an Ovation, but not a Guild. I could be wrong though.
I remember when Moving Pictures came out as well. I was already a new and rabid Rush fan having seen them on the Perm Waves tour (my very first concert experience). When MP came out, they played the album, in its entirety, on the radio a week or so before it was released. I remember dialing in our cheap Panasonic stereo, along with every other radio in the house, to the station to listen to it. It may have been one of the first Quad+ systems in the the world. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Wow
You rock. Love the masks as well.
Thanks. Most of the masks are from DeathStudios.
Never seen much of a bass face from you until this video haha! Awesome playing tho great job
Is it possible to play Geddy without bass face?
simply beautiful and magic I love it continue your passion and excellent work tjh3113
Thank you so much!
Guild B301 TONAL AWESOMENESS ! ! !
I think you will singlehandedly revive interest in this bass (^_^)
From 1 to another Bass player, 2 things. Well done! Secondly, if you’re ever wanting to share the “RUSHING” bass Camp. Please let me know.
Thank you. I'm not sure what you mean by "share the “RUSHING” bass Camp". Can you elaborate?
+TJH3113 Wow. Espectacular job.
Another badass cover..... You do any E.L.O. bass covers..... shine a little light has a awesome bass line
Thanks. I did Mr. Blue Sky a while back and have another one on my desktop but am holding off posting it because ELO are copyright nazis.
Your bass covers are very fantastic!!! May I ask how you get that punchy sound? I have no idea how to set that "Geddy" tone.. Big Thanks!!!
This is one of Troy's vids I came now and then to watch back again. It's truly impressive.
I wonder which criteria do you choose your bass on... I mean, why haven't you picked your Rickenbacker for this song?
Thanks so much Marcelo. I don't play the Rickenbacker very much because I really don't care for it very much.
This is all about rest: R'HUSH :) I'm trying some joke, forgive my english!
BTW clear and neat as always
Cheers mate
Thank you.
This is probably one of Rush's top 10 songs in their whole catalog. But, it's definitely a "forgotten" song among the other songs on the MP album. I thought Geddy got the tone on the MP album with his 4001 bass, but then I freaked out to learn he used a modified Jazz bass on most of the album. I always wanted to replicate the tone Geddy had on the MP album, but never could figure it out completely... It looks like you got the tone down exactly with your Guild bass. Did you use a compression effect? Great playing!... I don't think I've heard some of the notes between 4:05 - 4:15. Sometimes it's hard to hear all of the notes on the recorded version...
I use a touch of a compression preset in Garageband but it's very subtle. Most of my EQ comes from the SansAmp Bass Driver pedal. It's my opinion that most of the "Geddy" tone comes from the way the bass is set up - with low action and more than a little fret buzz, clack, and grind.
Sounds muuuuuuuch better than your 2010 version! 😉
I guess.
😂
nice cover man as always. Any plans for Karn Evil 9 1st impression?
Is it at 1:53? Also, one of my all time favorite Rush songs and of course, you are perfection. Again, that Guild sounds so good on these songs.
No, that's actually there as well. I may not have done it on the earlier version though. And actually, the "new" part I thought I heard is not there, I just mis-heard it. I'll need to go back and edit my description. I saw an "isolated bass version" of the song in the sidebar and checked it out there.
Thanks, I'm glad that you like the Guild.
Dude, the bass tone is awesome. Do you have a video that goes over your equipment, especially for Geddy style tone?
Thanks. I have a video titled "How I Record My Videos", but don't go into terribly much detail. I will say though, that much of what is considered to be the "Geddy style tone" comes from the way the bass is set up, as opposed to any effects or EQ. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them. You can ask by leaving a fresh comment on any video and I'll get back to you.
Have you done a video yet just showing all your basses? Looks like quite a collection.
No, I haven't. It would be a pretty long video.
Have a great week off from work, I guess that means more Bass covers , haha
Thanks. Possibly.
This is probably the best tone I have ever heard out of a bass! How long have you been playing?
I'm glad you like it. I've been playing over 35 years.
That's 2 of me and some change, wow
Thanks for rubbing it in.
If you get the chance you should redo your By-tor cover. Great work man.
That's one I would not look forward to doing over again. Thanks.
TJH3113 Too bad. Well I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to do next.
Look mom Skull Trooper!
Right?
Killer..
Thanks Joe
Amazing as always! How the heck does Geddy sing over all that?? Lol
Thanks. Good question.
+TJH3113 Having covered so many Rush songs to the tee, what song would you say was the hardest and more so what songs would you say had his best bass lines? Don't have to answer but I always found his later compositions a bit harder if only for his unique plucking hand technique.
