I just checked and I think it still happens around 67. Tested twice, once with an army of just 10 and another with a full army of 60, and they both collected in 35 seconds
This was found about a year ago; it's surprising it took that long to find it. While the reason is unknown, it might be an unintentional effect of optimization measures, as Pikmin animations are also simpler when there are more than 66 Pikmin on the field.
I'm not surprised. By the time you get the winged pikmin you're probably going to have over 66 in your squad and those who go below that aren't likely to notice
If all animations are different at that threshold then it's most likely that they just forgot about that animation when they decided to nerfed their carry speed.

I knew I wasn’t crazy thinking that winged Pikimin took years to carry the twilight river boss. I feel I can start the boss with half a day remaining and not be able to carry the drops back in time.
My hypothesis is that the game changes certain behaviors at dangerous predefined thresholds. Perhaps to quickly solve a bug found in testing. The winged pikmin especially would be likely to cause problems due to their unique programming, or merely because the collective flapping of their tiny, frantic wings is too much for the console to handle.
Oh well, I normally only play super spicy mode with the reduced Pikmin maximum so it makes sense I never noticed. Winged Pikmin are still my favorite ones!
Please keep uploading, your vids are great and I hope you do a minimum throw for pikmin 4! It would be interesting to see how many throws to rescue olimar, and to capture Louie, and to get all the castaways and treasure.
I don't have my Wii U with me right now so I can't personally check, but going entirely off of the Pikmin Wiki, this isn't Deluxe exclusive, this was part of base Pikmin 3.
Is this still the case in ultra spicy mode? or is it a different number like 40?

Also explains why they carry that same boss so much faster in ultra spicy mode. They are always below the 66 field level.

I guess it's been the wing Pikmin pathing has to account for extra pathing so they had to jury-rig it with something to make sure it didn't break.

My only guess is this is because of Ultra-Spicy mode? Like they decided to shadow buff carrying speeds because it obviously wasn't easy enough.
