I think it's worth noting that you're limited to 3 Pikmin types at a time, so you're not always gonna have purples with you unlike in 2. Since most players will just go with the 3 types that the game recommends you use for any given area/cave, which doesn't include purples very often, it makes them feel much more unique when you do get to use them. If they didn't have that strong initial thud attack, you might as well always go with Rock Pikmin instead of purples since they also are great fighters and have a strong "collision" attack, not to mention they're immune to getting crushed unlike purples. In my opinion the purples are very well balanced in this game. Not to mention the purple union is at the end of the long and challenging sage leaf gauntlet, most players won't get it until very late into the game, if not during post-game *after* the main story, so it's not a big deal that you can "easily" farm them at some point.

Pikmin 4 is definitely the most balanced. The only Pikmin that were somewhat underutilized were the Winged Pikmin, which don't have a lot of specific required uses. Pretty much every other type has a lot of required puzzles and hazards and the fact that you can only have 3 types at once further helps to make every type feel useful.
For the first half of the game, I found it super underwhelming how little the reds were used. Blue Pikmin and Ice Pikmin had the most use, and there were puzzles and high places for Yellows... but then during the second half of the game they introduced a new mechanic with the burning charcoals to make reds useful again! They even had a cave in the house area that could only be entered with reds (I wish they had one for yellows too though... blues had the Engulfed Castle, but yellows didn't get their own cave).
Winged and Rocks don't have as much main story use, but they make up for it by being utilized more in the Dandori challenges.

I’ve been testing purple pikmin’s impact damage! they usually deal double or more the impact damage of rock pikmin, it varies per enemy, but purple’s impact damage doesn’t activate during oatchi rushes, they also only deal the same damage as red pikmin if they fail to activate their impact damage. This differs from rock pikmin who can’t latch on at all but their impact damage activates during oatchi rushes, rushing with rocks on oatchi is like throwing half the number of purple pikmin except it registers instantly. I think purples slam is still a little too powerful, it should probably be the same as rocks so they’re like a compromise between rocks and reds imo.

Well said. The balance of purples and rocks just feels like it’s in a weird spot. Currently, purples do a better job at what rock Pikmin should be doing with throw impact. Rocks don’t really have a use outside of breaking glass.

I actually really like the niche that Purples have in Pikmin 4. They aren't stupid OP in the same way as in Pikmin 2, but they are extremely useful as trashkillers for when a bunch of weaker creatures are present. It kind of seems like that wouldn't be a huge deal but that exact scenario is present in a lot of caves and trials so being able to clear out rooms of weak enemies extremely fast feels like a great use for them. I also feel similarly about Whites, I never really used them in 2 because you get them too infrequently to have them be super useful outside of when they are needed and the poisoning enemies on being eaten doesn't feel good because you have to waste a rare pikmin to use it. But now that you can get white and purple onions, White pikmin are a great jack of all trades for building and carrying stuff.

My takes on the pikmin roles: Spoilers obviously.
Red: fire immune, jack.of-all-trades, master of none. Decent throw range, decent height, decent collection and normal carry power, higher than average attack strength make them great early game fighters and for collecting spicy fruits that do not require a specific pikmin to access.
Blue: Underwater specialists, with the same stats as red aside from attack, Blue's attack is the baseline, basically.
Yellow: higher and longer throws, same damage output as a blue pikmin, better at digging and immune to shocks.
Ice: Can swim through water while not carrying anything and can freeze water, but are still weak to water-based hazards (for some reason I cannot fathom) Enemies killed by them turn into nectar rather than leaving a corpse, so they cannot hunt to increase their numbers, but their freeze is otherwise really powerful. You use these guys when you want something dead at minimal risk and don't care if the critter leaves a corpse behind. Has the same attack strength as a blue pikmin, but will freeze a target before applying damage to it.
Purple: Purple pikmin have a very high mass, giving them the same attack strength as a red, but with a stomp attack, when they are thrown. They also weigh as much as, and have the strength of 10 other pikmin, making them ideal collectors. Their weakness is their low throw height and very short throw distance, and they have no elemental immunities. Combat and collection specialists.
Rock: Does a surprisingly high amount of impact damage and is immune to "MOST" crushing and piercing attacks. Some attacks still have the power to kill them this way, but you'd need a really big foe for that to happen. They cannot latch onto enemies but will instead ram them, making them more responsive when you call them back. Other stats are average. Best to use on small enemies that specialize in crushing or piercing damage. No elemental immunities. The only pikmin that can crush crystals and glass.
Pink: These adorable little pikmin are aerial fighting specialists and are capable of carrying items across water and over small ledges since they fly. Pink pikmin are tied for the weakest attack of all pikmin outside aerial combat. Their low attack makes them unsuitable to collect Ultra-Spicy berries. Flying pikmin are also pretty damn safe while carrying items, though they are the slowest pikmin while transporting items due to their small size.
White: These guys are FAST, and immune to poison, however their attacks are really, really, REALLY weak, on par with that of a pink. If eaten the one who ate them will take damage, and if enough are eaten at once it can kill just about anything outright. If you have enough of them, they make ideal carriers due to their high speed, but that about it. It's not recommended to use them to collect ultra-spicy berries, since their low attack means an overall slower collection speed than if red or purple pikmin do it.

keeping purples overpowered makes it more valuable to have to do some of the hardest challenges just to get them. It rewards you for going out of your way to get purples easier (even though caves are easy enough to grind wild purples.) You actually want a reason to go out of the way to get purples because they are worth using and you no longer have to worry about loing them (although if you're using purples i question how are you losing. They're purples). You took the time to get the onion you should get to use them however you want and they sure better be useful.

Another aspect of pikmin 4 that helps balance purple pikmin even further is the fact that with Oatchi and Moss, many othe pikmin are just as powerful as purples. Sure, you can throw them and kill enemies that way. Or you could load 100 rock pickmin on Oatchi, do the charge and nuke the enemy down. Or do the same with ice pikmin and make most enemies incapable of fighting back. Or do the glow shot with 100 glow pikmin and kill any enemy at night with no problem. All of this has admitedly taken the combat crown firmly away from the reds, but then again reds were really only the undisputed premier fighters in pikmin 1, back when they were 1/3rd of the full pikmin roster. With the many new fire hazards of pikmin 4, they now match the hazard clearing purposes of the other 2 original pikmin.

  • @thinkmin2584

I think making it so that way purples have to thud to get the bonus damage would be interesting. Because then you have to think about highground, and if you're situated in a way to kill and enemy quickly, as to not lose any Purple's. Because they are still rare, have no real resistances, and are hard to find.
But I think the problem is that imo they overshadow Rock Pikmin, which are no where near as powerful as they were in Pikmin 3. Rock Pikmin in my eyes are fighters that are good at burst damage, while also having some favorable matchups against some flying and crushing enemies. Purple's are kinda just that with different match ups (that you also cant keep alone) so I think they need some other kind of weakness, and I think punishing their speed - making them easier targets - would go a long way to making them a special kind of Pikmin,. And not an answer to combat.
