- A full walkthrough through our brand new vegetable garden in SW Ohio, zone 6a. We moved to our new property last fall and spent the winter working hard to make sure we could still have a garden in 2023. We went from a barren patch of land to twelve 4x12 foot raised beds, a straw bale garden, in ground beds, apple trees and raspberries. The garden is still in its infancy, with plans for a greenhouse, fencing (of course!) as well as additional trees in the orchard. We plan on doing a mid summer update in approximately 6 weeks, so subscribe to see the update! If you enjoyed the video, let us know in the comments, we'd love to hear from you!

Beautiful setup. Looks amazing. I am doing a garden for the first time and planted a lot of the same things. Great to learn and see what others are doing. Best of luck this year.
Hey Ryan, thank you! Wishing you the best of luck with your garden this year! Gardening is as humbling as it is rewarding 😆. Thanks for following along!
Great job!
Thank you! Appreciate the comment :)
Very nice garden ! I was born in Dayton and lived there 15 years . I’ve been I the South Georgia/ North Florida area since 1980 . Gardening is different here as our extreme heat and humidity makes it difficult to grow tomatoes past July 1st . Peppers , okra , sweet potatoes and southern peas will grow through the heat . I can grow a second crop of tomatoes and beans etc . planted in august and they will produce well into late November early December. Carrots , broccoli, lettuce, onions and various greens will produce all winter into spring. We have to split up into specific seasons but can grow something year round but my favorite thing is tomatoes and it’s difficult with the heat .
Thank you! We moved here from California so I know it takes time to work out how best to grow in your climate. Sounds like you’ve done a great job adapting to the south! I do love how here in Ohio all the seasonal things seem to match up (strawberries in June, tomatoes in July, winter squash in fall etc). Happy gardening to you!
Inspiring garden! I wonder your suggestion for irrigation system. Hope you make video about your system
Thank you. Can’t wait for next videos!!!
Thank you Lana! I will try and remember to discuss our irrigation system in a future video!
Gorgeous garden, gorgeous property, and an amazing garden is such a short time my friend. You've also done very well in a short time on UA-cam! You and your family are very fortunate to be living my dream :) If you ever get a chance, try some of the dwarf tomatoes from the dwarf tomato project. There are lots of good ones, and most of them only get from 3 to 5 feet tall. Two of my favorites are Rosella Purple, and Boronia. Good luck with the rest of the season!
Thank you! We’ve been vegetable gardening for many years but it’s not often you get to take everything you learned and try and build your dream garden in this place we are so fortunate to live! Love your videos and most definitely will try a few dwarves next year! Do you ever grow them in straw bales?
@@TheGardenFamily Yes, I have grown them in straw bales. They still require some support because of the weight of the fruit. I have mainly been growing just sweet potatoes in straw bales the last couple of years. I see that you grow sweet potatoes in straw bales too. As you mentioned, they are very easy to harvest that way.
Nice Peter! That's a lot of progress in a short amount of time.
Thank you! Lots of work as you know but a labor of love. How’s the injury recovery going?
@@TheGardenFamily slow but headed in the right direction.
Looks great Peter, may get mine out this week, late for sure.
Thanks Tim! Getting the tomatoes in the ground this week?
Wonderful garden! Do you deal with deer and if so what do you do to discourage them from eating your produce? We are in Cincinnati and there are deer everywhere! We have a fenced yard but I have found spots where they have bedded down at night in our yard despite the fence. 😬
Anyway, love seeing what grows in this part of the country and am looking forward to starting a garden this year.
Hi Gretchen 👋 we have a lot of deer and now have a fence around the whole garden. Last year we didn’t and to be honest didn’t have many issues. Ironically we had more deer problems in a suburban house compared to the house in the country…maybe there’s just more space for them out here? We are just north of Cincinnati so you should be able to compare notes with us where we are!
@@TheGardenFamily Oh that is interesting! I'd think it was worse further out but it makes more sense that they would just have less room to wander in the suburbs. We live right behind a nature reserve (Keener park) and I'm pretty sure they come up from there. I'll probably put up some kind of netting/poles system as well as see about some deer repellant spray for the fence line.
What county are you located in?
We are in Ohio, USA
