- It's May in the garden, and crops are growing fast. This time, I show you around the garden, sharing seeds and seedlings, planting asparagus crowns, growing sweet potato slips, and planting peas grown in a gutter. What a paradise! You're well on top of the season! I am not on top of the season, so I went to the garden center today to pick up some tomato and eggplant seedlings. When I walked into the greenhouse and saw all the plants, I was overcome and wept for joy, and couldn't read the tomato labels for like ten minutes.
Thank goodness for garden centres! They've saved my cookie a few times too :)

That's how I grow my sweet potato slips. They'll keep producing slips all summer. I just pull them and plant. I also trim the vines, they're delicious, and it forces more growth towards the tubers.
I learned that growers in hot climates use sweet potato leaves as a spinach/greens alternative. They do taste nice :)
Your garden bed layout is perfection. The wide walking paths make it calming to the eye! What a serene place to sit and enjoy being outdoors. I'm looking forward to seeing the "back yard" take shape this year. Love experiments, waiting to see if the roots will be forked or not. Beautiful to see how far you've come in only *2 years!* 💚👍
Thank you so much 💚Pathways are such an underestimated yet important part of the garden! My paths were much narrower at the allotment, and it was sometimes difficult to get the wheelbarrow in or to kneel and work. I'm much happier with the new ones!

a complete oasis...i love how everything is coming along so far...love the metal beds...i live in new hampshire and businesses use them (smaller versions) to plant outside their stores...my log cabin was built on a ledge and the metal beds seem to be a perfect way for me to actually have results from my gardening...thank you for all that you do to bring us pertinent information...and hello to the Mag-ster, garden sentry...🐈

I wish i lived there. It's a heaven to see all of your plants grow. Watching your videos makes me want to sow even more. So far i have: Jonagold apple, conference pear and they're both blooming :D. Lemon tree, bunch of strawberries, raspberrie and blackberries in pot. Aloevera inside the house but i want more!! I need a greenhouse too :D Lovely videos and you are so relaxed. For me as an asperger woman, that is really a thing. I love calm clear videos. Thank you for sharing!

We've grown sweet potatoes the last two years and the taste of them is amazing - I never thought you could grow them in the UK. I've bought slips too as had no idea how to do my own so this is amazing!

Hi Tanya I don’t do this but I have watched several videos of people doing peas like this. It didn’t work dry for them they had to water them but you made it look the simplest 👍
I've found that wet compost can stick to the gutter and make things more difficult. I could imagine that if the compost were too dry, it could be a pain, too, though. It's more like dry compost that's not rock hard but needs to be watered, I'd that makes sense?

If you have a rock hard soil, digging a hole to plant the asparagus will ensure that the roots will drown at the first rain, as the water will have nowhere to go.
That's true. You must always evaluate your soil, positioning, and other factors when planting. Every garden is different. As for no-dig asparagus, it uses worms to till the soil. My beds are not a layer of compost on rock hard soil - that's not how no-dig beds are.

Those dense, spiky pea sticks will also protect your peas from your eyes and hands when you're trying to pick them.
Not really, and pea sticks are a common way to support peas. The pods form more from the sides and closer to the middle and upper areas.

I grew sugar snap peas this summer, between a double wire mesh trellis with big 6 inch squares, which was still difficult for locating and picking.

Interesting on growing sweet potatoes. Was wondering if seed starts in the house would not grow as well in the poly tunnel? The garden looks amazing 🌱
Seeds and cuttings started in the house do great both outdoors and in the Polycrub. When planting outdoors, they need two weeks of hardening off though.
My first lot of toms failed to germinate I think it was the compost so my toms are late. I keep seeing everyone’s getting big and mine are small and peppers chillies and aubergines but everything else is growing well. I growing sweet potatoes from slips for first time they are planted outside in full sun so 🤞
My tomatoes and peppers were slow growing and yellowing, too. I had uppotted them once from trays into Solo cups using indoor potting mix. It turns out the mix had a lot of bark in it, so they were competing for nitrogen. After I completely sifted out all of the bark in new soil, I had a fine mix left and added vermiculite. So, I uppotted them again to a 32 oz yogurt cup, gave them a drink of half strength fish fertilizer (for nitrogen), and started bringing them out early to get a few hours of sun each day. OMG! They started shooting up like crazy! I started some San Marzanos 1 month after the first batch, and even they arw growing faster.
My last frost date isn't until mid May, but I usually wait until June 1 to put them in the ground. We always end up with an unforecasted hale storm or winter mix towards the end of May, so I wait. In the meantime, they are getting that extra ultraviolet feed on sunny days earlier than usual, but otherwise get 14 hours direct light indoors. I know it's mainly the soil because I didn't have enough yogurt cup for all of them and the remainder are still small... and they all go out into the sun together. Try new soil in a bigger container.

Part way through the video, you were talking about freezing the leaves of one of your crops, what reason do you freeze them? Are they for cooking with at a later date?
Last question, I promise 😂😂😂😂😂, what do you do with all the crops you grow. Do you sell them, munch your way through them, give them to food banks etc.
Hi Jacqui, I'm freezing the spinach because it's on the verge of bolting. Freezing is an easy way to preserve spinach 💚 I've got new spinach on the go, though :)
All of the produce I grow is for us and sometimes friends and family. I may start supplying a friend's restaurant this summer on a small level, though 💚
I tried planting two organic sweet potatoes in March to get slips planted near a window indoors wirh a little clear cover on them and i got zero results i think its been the lack of sun light this year where i live☹️. Its just cloudy and my flat isn't warm enough as im a hot person i don't use heating much . My balcony is full of onions this year. They seem ok in cloudy weather so far. Have planted spinach and chard wirh them. My tomatoes are still indoors. Im trying a couple of strawberries too. 🤞. The only upside of this weather is ive had no grernfly on the balcony yet. 😏
They are heat and light-loving plants, so that probably explains it. That's fantastic that you're getting so many other crops in on your balcony though 👏🧅🥬

Curious if you could just leave the gutter in the bed and stake from there or would the roots not have enough girth in the gutter?
There's not enough space for the roots of mature pea plants.

Your shallow raised beds: do you dig into the ground as well? I've seen inexpensive small beds but only 6" tall, just curious!
They're no-dig beds - we constructed the wooden sides last year, covered the grass with cardboard, then about 6" of compost. That's it :)
What is the brand name of the covered raised garden beds you have behind table on the patio? It looks like you have three of them. They look perfect for herbs. How is the pond working out by the polycrub?

Hi Lisa, they're called Vegepods and are FAB. Hands down the best container I grow in 🙌 I started with the smaller 'medium' size and added the larger one this spring.

I'm curious why sweet potatos are planted differently than white normal potatoes? Are they a different thing completely even though they're both called a 'potato'? 😅 But fabulous idea! I never knew!
I planted some regular potatoes, strawberries and flowers so far this year. Going easy as I'll be away two months and watering will be a bit of an issue. 😅

British maritime climate - approx zone 9a using the US system and close to the climate of the PNW.
Why not just direct sow pea seeds, they are very cold tolerant?
Because mice go after the seeds and slugs go after the young seedlings. This is an easy way to mitigate both.
Why is there no weeds ? Lol
There's plenty, but no-dig gardening means fewer weeds overall. I used to weed much more when I had a more conventional garden (dug and no mulching).
