- Brake bias is one of the best tools for balance adjustment on the fly in a race car. Most race cars have limited options for balance adjustment once the wheels are already rolling, but brake bias is one of easiest and most effective.

@@justkev1044 it's actually not as simple as the number of Gs, I'm not an expert at driving physics but here's my explanation attempt anyways,
Each corner is different, the entry speed is different the cornering speed is different and all that depends on how tight the turn is and therefore the way drivers brake is different for each corner. Therefore the brake bias also needs to be changed accordingly, compensating for the understeer or oversteer being induced.
There's no best setting either , depends car to car, setup to setup and even drivers choice of line through the corner and general driving style.
You've got to remember f1 drivers are chasing fractions of seconds to keep going faster hence they make adjustments constantly to ensure every corner is just perfect
That's just my take from my knowledge, feel free to correct me or pose counter arguments!
@@rahulnamboodiri6660 I mean even if there are different entry speeds for different corners, they brake the same way on the same terrain, with only the duration that changes. The only explanation I have is that maybe the road has rubber, the road is wet, the track is going downhill/uphill, or they’re behind a car.
@@justkev1044 not just that they also trail brake into corners and I'm not sure but maybe left foot braking as well . Depending upon the steering lock and brake bias, you may have understeer or oversteer. You see them adjust brake bias on quali hotlaps as well for this reason
@@rahulnamboodiri6660 but max and Charles don't change brake bias yet they are easily faster than Lewis. So that means changing adjustments is ineffective and will cost you a lot

I find that for any car or track 60-62 fwd works like a charm. I usually start with 70 or so and dial it back after 2-3 laps to warm the brakes up
i usually go for 60 on the front at the start, then take it down to about 57 during the race
Took me a month to discover it, now my trail braking is nice and smooth
I like oversteer, because it helps me rotate the car faster and helps warmup the rears, which is why i set my brake balance to the rear of the car without it being too extreme
So that's why my cars in gran turismo want to drift

If you have downforce arrow… in a crappy civic which I learned on… shifting all braking to the front to force the weight to the front outside tire allowed me to lighten the downforce and grip on the back tire to help the car rotate around followed by slapping the gas after releasing a quick jab break entering an up hill 270 degree turnoff at 90mph and exiting by the police offer at the top of the hill at 60 mph while barely keeping it the pavement while exiting highway turnoff from the old Saturn plant in springhill tn…. Normally ballanced turnoff was at 70mph except for the day I got to excited to leave work programming Automation machinery…. It’s interesting how rhe brake bias works the exact opposite with front and rear arrow…. I used the same technique as I did with my civic with my old mazdaspeed mx5 which didn’t have enough power to keep the back wheels spinning like my old 2005 corvette z51 did…. Again, these were street tires and not super stick, break your neck of side window(like i almost did with my head in the corvette) when the tires break traction for a second and then lock hook back up wanting to toss the car back in the opposite direction off the outside of the turn from overcorrecting bc Im use to drifting it in the rain to safe my tires for smiles.
Now I’m just an angry driver with a golf R putting 400hp down at the wheels bc it it keeps wanting to hook up and not let the back come out in the rain or cause understeer by not sending power to the back tires till after the front tires slip resulting in the car pushing it’s straight instead of rear bias car allowing the back to come around and use understeer to keep pushing the car back to the inside of the turn while on non studded, studdable snow tires when i had my old 540 m-sport e39 bmw on snowy 270 westlake ohio (cleveland lake effect snow 😌😌😌) highway turnons to I480 west in glorious snowstorms.
Granted, I use to do all this in my younger days while I was in my late 20’s…. Now I’m 37 and enjoy doing this stuff where it’s legal, sadly that’s not to often any more which really depresses me… plus I don’t know of any legal places to play around Dayton ohio were i live now… plus I really miss lake effect snow… now i only get chunky ice sheets that cover the roads in patches making the grip more unpredictable bc I can’t lock out my drive train power from front to back so I can’t trust what my car thinks is best while it’s trying to transfer power to the front to get grip but i really need the power to stay on the back wheels to minimize understeer when the wheel goes numb suddenly and a turn is coming up… some may say to slow down… meanwhile my mind goes to…”What months can I legally stud my tires for road use, was it December to February? But March usually has some bast snowstorm too

Locking up is mostly a skill issue. Experience people rarely ever lock up and pair that with brake migrations and everything and it's not too hard 😊

Now the BB is clearly dependent on certain factors to achieve the optimal balance questions becomes what are those cuh im pretty sure varies every track
Tarmac grip corner to corner, track temps , track evolution ( rubbering in), corner speeds and angles (for trail braking) and so on.

dont forget about tyre temperature from the brakes! while not as directly noticable, it can help or try to fuck with you over the course of a lap :p

Would you be able to explain how for example too much forward can also make the rear tyres overheat as I heard that multiple times but don’t get it? 😁
Too much forward means usually front tires slow down faster than the rears (can also cause front lockups) and therefore when the car turns in the front turns well but the rear slides, even if it's a little bit it's enough to cause tire wear and heat into the rears

when you say brake bias, suddenly i remember the expert, Michael Schumacher. every corner Schumi Will adjust it to get perfect lap, old style.

This is slightly oversimplified. Depending on the car, having too much front bias will cause oversteer assuming you're NOT locking the front tires IF you're trailbraking is good.
Wait what, saying this makes it sound like your gonna always lock your brakes every time, but I don't really see that or feel that much when sim racing so idk, sounds like the stuff this is saying only happens at instantly slamming the brakes completley and not even trying to stop a lock up, and if it's perfect your still loosing traction too right I haven't really felt that
What he is saying isn't 100% accurate. General rule of thumb is to set bias back for heavy braking zones and more forward for light, big trailbraking zones.

Bro thats not exactly how brake bias works. A higher brake bias is used for sharper corners while a lower brake bias is used for fast corners like the last corner in monza which I use 55% bb

for me it's the LITERAL OPPOSITE
a completely FRONT BRAKE BIAS makes me oversteer while a completely BACK brake bias makes me UNDERSTEER.
When the brake bias is all the way to the back, and just the front tires are spinning, it feels like I am fucking driving a front wheel drive car, and everyone knows how hard it is to drift or powerslide with a front wheel drive car
