Pantera was my first live show I attended. October 2, 1997 Corpus Christi, TX. I was 13 years old. And as a drummer and guitar player , it was awesome to see them live. I will never forget that show. Coal Chamber, and Machine Head opened. Also, I remember how loud Dime’s guitar was…my ears rang for a couple of days after. True story.
What an Fing sweet and real guy Grady is. He's always been a part of the family, but you never get to just hear the man talk and be himself, and what a humble and nice guy. No wonder he was a close friend to Dime and Vinnie, thats the kind of friend you can trust. Thanks so much for posting this, Pantera was a favorite band for me when I was in highschool in the late 80s, and always will be. RIPDA
I seen damageplan in 04 in orlando fl. I had a home made shirt with dimes face on the front, i couldnt get into the autograph line so as im standing on the side dimebag stopped the line, came over and signed my shirt and said hello it was the coolest day of my life amd i still have the shirt.
I havent had a reason to look forward to new music since Dime passed, i miss the music so much pantera (Dimebag) was great. I did get to meet him once in 04
I believe im the biggest Dime fan of course, but the guitar case story is one i haven't heard or thought about. It will stick with me. Love ya Grady, Miss ya Dime and Vince.
That story about coming across the guitar case….i would’ve folded right there😞 That’s rough. Grady, I love ya dude. One day I hope that I can shake your hand and buy YOU a round. Rest in Power Dime, Vinnie, and Jerry Abbott🖤🖤🖤
Hell yeah man! Some judge (judged) Mitch as just some "junkie" or heroin addict which he obviously was when he was alive but he was a comedic genius and in my humble opinion was ahead of the game comedy game in his own little ways. This will seem a bit odd to most people (if not everyone 😂) that reads this part of my comment but I in my own little way consider Mitch Hedberg the "Nirvana/Kurt Cobain of comedy". What I mean by this is that not only are both Mitch and Kurt Cobain are/were Pisces (♓🐟), but were also both pretty heavy heroin users, both died of heroin overdoses (Kurt Cobain did NOT COMMIT SUICIDE AND WAS MURDERED but was already dead from the "ten times the LETHAL DOSE of heroin" which was publicly admitted by the then Seattle Police of Chief whom was then subsequently fired for f*cking up and letting the cat 🐈 out of the bag by revealing that fact before the official results of the autopsy was released to the public which was another extremely odd aspect to Cobain's death. It took OVER THIRTY YEARS for the public to see the official autopsy report/toxicology report (!!!!?). If that isn't suspicious I don't know what is!? So I said that to point out that both Hedberg and Cobain even eeriely died the same way... They both introduced an entirely new way of expressing yourself in their respective crafts and though it was Cobain that introduced it to a MUCH bigger audience and overall more famous, Hedberg was so slouch! I haven't gotten to the portion of the interview that mentions Hedberg, so I'm sure I'll be editing this comment again but yeah I was a bit surprised to see such an iconic comedian in an interview about Dimebag Darrell/Pantera! So weird 😂 RIP Mitch Hedberg ❤❤❤
Part of that tour cycle from the old days was at the Hard Roxx in Lawton, Ok. I couldn't tell how many shows I saw with both singers before Phil, the gig on Dimevision where Darrell was singing and one of Phils first gigs at the Lawton Speedway. I would Love to know if Grady remembers a time in Lawton ..."Wheres Dime?" He was with some folks S of town surfing in the back of a pick up truck. Thanks Grady!
The R.I.P. guitar Grady is talking about is a stock black Dean 79 MLF model that the custom shop dropped a real Floyd into. It was sitting in Elliott's office for years at Dean HQ in Florida. Several of us D.O.A. members would get a chance to jam on it when we hung with him in his office...having no idea whatsoever that it was the R.I.P. guitar.
When I was a kid I would walk to Music World , the music store Grady worked at before working with Dime , and ask him gobs of guitar questions. He was very nice and never let on that I was a pain in the ass, which I’m now convinced that I probably was. When I bought my first head, a Laney just like his, I pulled his # from the phone book and cold called him for advice. Although he told me I fucked up by not using the funds to buy a Randall , he was absolutely friendly and helpful. I really looked up to him.
I have never heard any negative stories about Dimebag.. never heard any thing about him being ugly or being an asshole... I seen them in Alabama when they were with White Zombie but I never met him or anything like that.. what a beautiful legacy.
Dude, I have a Dime pick somewhere.. I was also lucky enough to wrestle away Vinnie Paul's drumstick from everybody in the mosh pit.. Is that one is in my drawer..
@Craig Gass If you havent get a interview with videobob moseley. Easy to find on YT. Makes movie car replicas and panteras former tour bus driver and got to know all the boys really well.
Dude write a book you said it yourself you were apart of history Texas music history I seen Pantera at Matleys in Dallas in the 80s and like Grady said you knew they were going to make it I was ready to give up guitar after hearing Pantera they were so far above anything else at the time write a book
Thanks for this, Craig. Grady is a legend. The entire crew is just as famous thanks to the Pantera Home Videos 🤘😁

"When i was a boy, i used to lay awake in my twin size bed and wonder where my brother was."

Gass rules. I listen to that Van Halen story at least once every six months. Favorite bit of all time.

Is that Daniel Baldwin?
I"d love Craig to tell the Pantera story that Howard Stern dumped when he was on the show in 2006. I've always wanted to know what he said
