Just a tip for listening to metal when they growl or scream try and think of their voice as in instrument instead of trying to figure out what the vocalist is saying

Agree! And then look up the lyrics when you like the song as a whole. Read along and the more you do that, the more you will understand without lyrics with other songs.
Growls are definitely an aquired taste (for most people at least). Just keep listening and eventualy it will just click with you. You might wanna also check Opeth's lyrics since they often use growls in a context.

Opeth is for sure my favorite band. Proper deathmetal growls are sometimes an almost requirement, given the proper aggression and lyrical context of a song. If the subject matter isn't about the usual bullshit pop culture issues, but something more dark and brooding, then it's more fitting than soft and happy vocals.

Also, I'm not sure a live version was a good choice, as everything just becomes more muddled, which isn't what you want for someone already partial against death metal. And Ghost of Perdition *is* fantastic, but it's not really the best introduction in the first place, I think.

Opeth is the band that made me accept growls, and that was recently and I'm 40+ and grew up with friends loving death metal. I loved metal but could never get into death, until Opeth. Three of the songs that helped the transition along was Harlequin Forest, Bleak and Drapery Falls. But pretty soon Ghost Reveries became my favorite album, including Ghost of Perdition. Opeth are fucking great, can't remember how many years ago anything captured me similarly.

I'm an old guy myself.... when listening to music with this style of vocals, and with Opeth in particular, I think of opera, where each voice is a character. In Opeth songs, the growls are often from the point of view of and antagonist, ghost, demonic figure...

If you don't want the growls but want that classic "Opeth" feel then I'd check out Face of Melinda.
That being said I do love their newer stuff as well and they've done no guttural vocals in the last 3 albums. If you want something newer to check out I'd suggest Strange Brew. It almost has a vibe reminiscent of Pink Floyd.

Opeth is such a great band. Metal in general, other music genres don't have that much talent, not even close. So much complexity, so many changes/transitions, it's unbelievable... I hate people who say that growls are not singing and they don't understand all of this. Please stop, seriously... I'm glad you like the "normal" singing though.

@@Snake3004 No, it's not a matter of opinion. Jazz is way more complex than metal and so are classical compositions. Saying that other music genres don't have that much talent is pretty funny to read in a world where there are so many talented musicians in every style of music.
@@francismcalister7811 I'm not saying that there are no talented musicians in Classic and Jazz, I'm just saying that Metal is a bit more complex than the others.😮 I know that Classic and Jazz are complex as well but as I said, I think Metal is a tiny bit more complex so yeah.😄

This was old opeth listen to new opeth right now they're prog rock no growl at all the vocalist don't wanna growl anymore but the album still kick ass listen to they newest singles really good called Heart In Hand

If you want something softer, check latest albums, you will not regret,,, on the other hand, Opeth is more progressive rock/metal than death metal since album Damnation which I totally recommend too

Most other reaction channels have lyrics up so they can truly understand the song and have a genuine reaction. You obviously can do what you want but I for sure will not be watching. Good luck.
