  • This is our first time ever listening to Opeth. We started with Ghost of Perdition because it won a poll on a live stream. Many people on the stream said it wasn't the best song to start with. What do you think, was it a good first song or not?

Truth. I was introduced to My Arms Your Hearse and Morningrise, having never listened to the death growl vocals. But the music and composition is so compellingly complex you just know there's more to it than what it seems first or even 5th listen. It was good enough to keep me trying, and they're now a top 5 all time band.

Opeth are very talented, but is certainly an acquired taste. Really, their genre, progressive metal, takes time to appreciate. I find I have to be in the right mood for progressive metal. Opeth for one has some songs that last 12+ minutes. With that being said, when the mood strikes Opeth are the masters of their craft in my humble opinion. The good news is you've ventured into Sweden.....now you need to listen to Swedish melodic death metal. That will be more of the direct metal sound you're accustomed to. In Flames is a great choice for dipping your toes into the swedish melodic metal scene. Try their song Bullet Ride...it's off of their most popular album (I would venture), but they are a polarizing band with a vastly different new sound to their classic old era so depending on their fans you might get pulled in either direction haha.

Opeth is very much a musicians pick. The orchestration, musicality, emotion, and deep lyrical content they delve into will leave most non-musicians whiplashed. "Not getting it", or "being lost" is a common reaction as it is very technical. Their music takes the listener on a journey that is not only told via the lyrics, but also felt via the instrumental performance. Think of it along the lines of modern Beethoven or Bach with lyrics.
Highly recommend "Sorceress - Opeth" live at the red rocks amphitheater. Or "Reverie/Harlequin Forest - Opeth"

YESSSSSS. Opeth is an acquired taste one that is well worth the effort to get into. Ghost of Perdition is a hard song to swallow on first listen, very complex. Try Burden, Face of Melinda, Sorceress for a non-growl taste.
Or try Demon of the Fall, Bleak, Night and the silent water for a more growl focused song. Opeth is probably one of the most influential "extreme" metal bands in history.

These guys are like the Pink Floyd of extreme music. They inevitably grow on you the more you listen because you can't help but appreciate the incredible musicianship, orchestration, and dynamics; it's as artistic as a symphony because of the singer's ability to portray so many moods, stories, and characters within those stories. The earlier albums - Blackwater Park and back - are albums where each song is a part among many parts in an overall story. Each song/track has chapters, but there's still a verse (verse 2 or 3 sometimes), chorus, bridge, breakdown, etc. - but there's often an intro, outtro, etc. For those looking for that Top 40 structure, this approach is unorthodox and tough to grasp because we inherently try to put things in that box, but Opeth throws that approach out the window. I respect these guys as much as any band because their songwriting and performance is pretty unmatched. They NAIL these songs live; I've seen them two or three times - once at Red Rocks with Gojira and Devin Townsend Project. I'll forever be grateful I was there for that concert; it's reacted to on UA-cam all the time all around the world because the planets were aligned at that show. To be sure, there is one singer doing all those voices in Opeth - Mikael Akerfeldt. The band is from Sweden. My favorite track by them is Deliverance.

I heard an interview with Tatiana and Eugene, and she said Opeth’s Blackwater Park was one of her favorite albums. So, I had to look them up. I’m grateful to Jinjer for opening my mind to new to me genres. I’m old and I just didn’t like certain things. On other artist Tatiana said was a direct influence to her growling is Otep. You should react to Otep - Ghost Flowers. Also, Battle Ready is one of my favorites. It’s metal rap.

I’m older too, so I’m very particular with certain types of music. Death and Opeth got me into growls which I didn’t like at first, even Opeth I “tolerated” the growls in the beginning because of their beautiful compositions and clean sections. Now I thoroughly enjoy the growls.

@@soakedbearrd I jokingly tell people I’m a Jinjer evangelist because Jinjer changed everything for me. “Have you heard the good news?” LOL. Tatiana and Eugene talking about Opeth Blackwater Park was their favorite. Also, her saying Otep Shamaya is how she learned women can scream and growl. Or them covering LoG changed my mind about them too. I guess I just needed a push. A few months before i saw my first Jinjer reaction, me and my son went to see Slayer and LoG opened for them. I w didn’t hate them, but I was there for Slayer. AFter Jinjer, I dove into LoG. I was pissed that I didn’t enjoy them more when we’d seen them. So evangelical religion is an apt metaphor for what Jinjer did for me.

Your right you need to listen to this style of music allot to start really appreciating it. Opeth don't really ever create banger's or hits they just write amazing heavy music that tell stories that are extremely deep and hard to understand. But I guarantee if you keep listening to them they will grow on you more and more and you will be obsessed with listening to ALL of their albums! And never let anyone tell you that the albums starting with Heritage on aren't worth listening to. They are ALL masterpieces but some fans just can't get over the fact that they changed their sound up and lost the growls.

I'm a latecomer to Opeth...but the album that opened it up for me was "Damnation." It's all clean vocals. Much more melodic, as is pretty much every album that came after it. I've since grown to like the growls more, but his clean singing voice (and the band's talent for melodic and heavy) are what made me a fan. Try "Harvest" from "Blackwater Park" for another lighter song from their heavier era.

  • @akhmedthemerchant4741

I would recomend Blackwater Park, Drapery Falls or Bleak for the next song. Bleak may be the easiest to digest at first, drapery falls is a mix, and Blackwater Park is a whole new experience of craziness. Funnily enough, these are all from the same album aswell

Old Opeth is epic. I can’t get into their new rock sound as much, but classic albums like Blackwater are some of the best metal ever. Many consider Blackwater Park one of the most important metal albums, period. This was my favorite band until they got rid of the death metal growls.
I consider Opeth “nerd metal”. It takes a music nerd to fully appreciate.

I'm stoked that you listened to Opeth and I absolutely love this song but it's massive. This band are very progressive, so lots of change ups. I needed a good few listens to really get into this song, just because there is so much to absorb. You may not have realised listening to this without visuals that those vocals are all done by one guy Mikael Akerfeldt, with just a few added harmonies from the keyboard player. Their lyrics are pretty deep and usually written in a poetical kind of form which can be difficult to interpret. They are from Sweden. If you do listen to this song again, maybe watch the live at Red Rocks version. It helps the brain to see what is going on as well I think :)

Seeing this video made me reflect on my own interest in progressive metal. I feel like I find a lot of enjoyment in "figuring out" these eccentrically organized songs. When I listen to them now, I anticipate every switch up, and it's satisfying. That said, I feel like the strange composition can lead to the first few listen-throughs not feeling as satisfying or catchy. Also, great reactions as always, the dynamics between you two are fun.

It's about an exorcism. At least that has always been my take. It can also be that when his mother was possessed he was forced to kill her. The rest of the songs can suggest that this was the case and then he then had to flee from what he had done while still be chased by the demons/devil that took her as they come for him. The entire album relates to the supernatural, haunting, and battling/escaping demons kind of thing. I mean it's a little more complex than that, and open to full interpretation.
Side note, this entire album is perfect in every way, as is Opeth lol. This is my favourite song by them, and it was the first I ever heard too, and it immediately blew me away with how different they were.

Opeth's lyrics often have a horror theme, and they are seldom crystal clear. I believe (but I'm not quite sure) that this song is about a mother who is obsessed with a demon (though I see it as she might be demented), and her son kills her.
Jinjer are big fans of Opeth, btw,

Opeth is a band that needs lots and constant listenings to their songs so they start to make sense. It's a process of a lifetime. I (and Opeth) come from a time when we had the time to listen to music and grow up with it. I don't see that happening today. It's all so disposable, now.

2005 has it really been 16 years??? First time I heard this song was on a metal show on my local rock station. Damnation Alley every Sunday at midnight. I think I stayed on the phone a good 20 minutes trying to ask the DJ who the artist was. Immediately went out to buy the CD as soon as I had the money lol.
I had heard rumblings of Opeth, a familiar name but one I had never actually listened to. So discovering them the way I did was sort of a magical experience and remains one of my favorite musical memories.

Not your fault, as it is a heavily requested song, but this is a terrible first song choice. It's a lot to take in on a first listen, even for a seasoned Opeth fan. But worry not, this band is a true rabbit hole, so much material, so incredibly different, yet so Opeth. So glad you got to them, hope the next request is something easier on your ears to break you in properly. But i promise you, once you get it, you'll be blown away.
