    He could have easily got 3500 from Rick. He misinterpreted Rick's question as a counter offer. Rick was taking the offer at 3100 no problem.

    A suggestion to Rick: instead of asking “do you mind if I call a friend of mine to have a look at it?” I would ask “do you mind if I call an expert to give us more info on this and a more accurate market value?”. I mean... if you call “a friend”... it doesn’t make it like a professional thing. It might get sellers a little upset.

    • @MargoMB19
      @MargoMB19 5 років тому

      While I get what you mean, the psychological effect of the word 'friend' might actually be better in some cases. It's obvious when the 'friend' gets there that they are an expert, just by the details they are talking about. But by saying 'friend', he is giving the impression that he actually knows this person, trusts them to give accurate information, and most likely has a positive history with them. Instead of just 'hey I heard about this expert lets see if he knows anything'. People who deal with customers constantly for years learn how wording can really make a difference.

    • @AzazelReborn81
      @AzazelReborn81 5 років тому

      MargoMB19 except that: 1) if you’re calling a friend, the customer/seller might think (as they often do) that you’re calling someone who will take your side and help you lower the price; 2) an expert is an expert, and if you’re calling him/her, it’s understood that you know him/her and how he/she works and trust that person and that he/she knows what he/she’s doing. I know perfectly well that wording is important. I’ve been working with customers for over 15 years.

    That french sword is worth about 900-1100 $, prusian one about 800-900 $, and english one 2000-2200 $ and that is max worth, so guy got a fine price for them.

    Rick: "Well I gotta make money... I'll give you $6 for it."
    Guy: "But it's a $20 bi-"
    Rick: "$6.50 and not a penny more"
    Guy: "Can you do $6.51?"
    Rick: "I'm afraid we can't make a deal. Come back if you change your mind."

    It was a fair price. Rick either takes the first $4000 offer to come through the door....or he auctions them and pays the 25% fee. And either way he pays 40% in taxes.

    The seller messed up. Here's 33 years of sales expertise and advice: Always do your own research BEFORE selling military antiques and never offer your 'bottom line' price. If you are buying: Don't believe the back story unless its provable, trust what you see in front of you. When selling, always bat the question back to the buyer 'what are YOU prepared to pay for them?' negotiate hard (walk away if your not happy with any aspect of the deal) and NEVER accept any first offer!

    People always comment on these videos "that's a historical item! Why sell it to go on vacation or clean your yard!?" You can't actually do anything with this stuff except look at it, and looking at it gets very boring after awhile. After that, it's better off in a museum, where a large number of people can get the thrill of seeing it for the first time.
