    Love these two men of God. Years ago I was in a Christian bookstore waiting on my children to use the restroom. As I waited, I reached up and touched two books while there, “More than a Carpenter”, which I had never heard about and a .49 cent “Book of John”. For some strange reason I bought them both. Left to pick up my 13 year old son who had recently changed his social media profile to agnostic. When I arrived a man was telling my son that two books that helped him come to Christ in Amsterdam were “More than a Carpenter “ and the Book of John. In that moment I didn’t say that I had just purchased them. It was like a kiss from Heaven knowing God was moving on our behalf. I gave the books to my son and told him God was big enough to question but to look for truth. Happy to say he is back pointing people to Christ.

    Thank you Sean for doing this interview!!! Evidence that Demands a Verdict was a really helpful book in my days at the university when my atheist teacher on the origins of Christianity was throwing bombs at my newly found faith in Christ. I have appreciated apologetics ever since. God bless you richly Sean and Josh!!!

    5/21/2021Josh McDowell is bold and it shows. God's hand is on his life and He uses that relationship to reach and connect to others. He was very approachable at first when I approached him at a restaurant. He came back to converse with me.Later when I approached him and asked a focused question he was able to answer me and showed his interest and the compassion of God.Josh McDowell is a genuine believer in the Savior Jesus Christ and anyone should listen to what he has to say when he speaks or when you have an audience with him,Robert Buckingham-Glad to meet You Josh McDowell!5/21/2021

    Mr. McDowell, Sr, I read your books when I was at Bible College, so long ago that Jr.was probably not born yet. More than a Carpenter was so easy reading, I wondered why it has been chosen for college level reading, but it had a great impact on me. It has been one of the few college textbooks I reread more than once, and consulted for my own writing. You know - I finally found the film for my photographic memory, but by then everyone else had gone digital.

A couple of those abusers have threatened to kill me. I know it is God's will for my life yet, it is scary to know the actions they may try and take. I needed this reminder.

    Wonderful! I remember a couple of key quotes from Josh's book, Evidence that Demands a Verdict: "We cannot pander to a man's intellectual arrogance, but we must cater to his intellectual honesty... My heart cannot rejoice in what my mind rejects as untrue." How refreshing that was to me in the days of my searching for truth. Thank you for combining excellent case-making evidence with the testimonial experience of God's leading. BY THE WAY, Josh's reference to PRETORIA (not Johannesburg) as the capital of South Africa (along with Cape Town and Bloemfontein) was CORRECT. I hope someone researched that and admitted that to him after this conversation. To God be the glory for taking Josh beyond the limits of his ability to glorify Him with His boundless grace!

    Love this! In the 80's and early 90's I chaperoned youth groups to Josh McDowell conferences in the Birmingham area. What a blessing to hear and know that the young people that had been entrusted to me for the evening were hearing truth and in a way that they understood. When my husband & I were newlyweds we chaperoned our youth group to a camp where Josh was speaking. This venue was in the Blue Ridge mountains and, lets just say it had a lot of distractions. Sean, you were with your dad and was about 10 years old? One evening my husband & I were looking for our youth and ran into you both prayer walking in the mall area. We all had the same concerns that week. Many years later our daughter comes back from SLU in Orlando and was talking about their speaker who was a professor. Dr. Sean McDowell! What a blessing to see what God has done, doing & will do in using you both for the furtherance of His kingdom.

  • @Derek_Baumgartner

    Such a powerful interview.
    That part of him speaking in tongues without knowing it: very profound.
    And, to be honest, God helping us speak of His Son is nothing new.
    When I've spoken (online, through text, but in real-time) to some people in trying to witness to them, sometimes (especially it seems when someone is really hurting) and they ask a question, I just naturally end up typing out a response that ties together unnaturally well.
    I try to learn, and to be ready to 'give an answer for the hope that lies within me', but occasionally when I've spoken to people in conversation the way I end up responding to certain things clearly was beyond my knowledge and/or tact. I wish I remembered these moments more clearly!
    And regarding God answering your prayer: several times I've spoken to people who were 'just about to leave', then they thanked me and said they really needed to hear about Jesus - about what I shared with them.
    Not everyone is equipped for the same role in the ministry, but everyone can minister to a degree: Jesus's Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) was not tail-ended by "unless you're not silver-tongued." Remember Moses at the burning bush!
    It's His merit and power, not ours: He does not command us to do that which He does not equip us to do.
    I recall also something the late Ravi Zacharias said, when he was speaking to a man he called Sheikh Talal (if memory serves: shortened version of the full answer and exchange): "Until we accept the Son that God has offered for us, we will continue offering our own sons and daughters on the battlefield for money, power, and prestige."
    Ravi noted that he hadn't thought of that before, and as he was leaving the talk, someone he was with said "Ravi, that was of God", to which Ravi responded "I sure hope so!"
    ===
    I've such a long way to go.
    But as your father said, of giving his 'failings' over to God - of offering them to Him - it seems best to trust God with all that you have and are, rather than seeking to be something He did not make you to be.
    So: a few takeaways:
    -Conviction in the Word, and the written Word, and the value of people, and the love of God for every human being
    -Boldness to go
    -Recognizing it's His power, and He can use you just as you are
    -Picking a door and going, and praying "Stop me if this ain't what You want from me", rather than only waiting for a door to come to you.
    (patience and waiting on the Lord is key: don't rush without thinking, but similarly don't fail to go, I think)

    • @anastazjamalczyk7683
      @anastazjamalczyk7683 3 роки тому

      Hi Derek,
      You mentioned replying to sb questions or concerns in a kind of supernatural way, beyond your knowledge or wisdom.
      I've been struggling with it, because on one hand I wanna live like that, and on the other- I am so deeply afraid of the Holy Spirit just taking over completely.
      How does it work, and is there really nothing to be afraid of?

    • @Derek_Baumgartner
      @Derek_Baumgartner 3 роки тому

      @@anastazjamalczyk7683 Remember the fruits of the Spirit - from Galatians 5:22-23:
      "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
      Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
      More modern translations have 'self-control' over 'temperance,' but basically the same thing: control over the self, not a loss thereof!
      When I mentioned what happened, I meant it - but not that I was out of control. Rather, the right words came to me, if that makes sense. Ideas suddenly connected together and I answered what was being asked more clearly than I normally would be able to (if at all).
      I kind of think of it now like a sudden burst of wind in the sails of a boat: the boat relying on power outside of itself for both direction and speed.
      When I said "I wish I remembered these moments more clearly!" - I am not saying I blacked out or any such thing. I've spoken to a lot of folks online and I didn't note down much at the time when such things happened while speaking to folks. I probably should have: my memory isn't the best. :P
      Make a bunch of .txt documents on your computer or some such for reminders - even little folders. I should probably try to be more diligent there in this area, too.
      ----
      In short, though, if one of the fruits of the Spirit is self-control, I don't think your fear that you stated is justifiable. God loves us and wants to work with us and cleanse us: to draw us nearer to Him and for us to work with Him in doing this, rather than against Him.
      To respond to His calling, not to resist it. His calling, however, isn't to 'become a puppet' and lose consciousness or some such!
      A few vids that may be helpful - let me know what you think if you see them. :)

    The part with the gifts of the spirit encouraged me, namely the gift of languages, (divers tongue). Awesome!

    I'm watching this in August 2021, and I am super encouraged. I read More Than a Carpenter in Bible College (in Central Europe) as a pretty fresh follower of Christ (almost 30 years ago) and it had a great impact on me. On all of us. I had no idea Josh McDowell had such an amazing life story. What a heritage to leave behind to his children and grandchildren and all of us. I can't wait to watch part 2 and hopefully even more. THANK YOU 💖

    Fantastic stories, Wow!!! One thing, as a South African...Pretoria is the capital (executive), though our judicial capital is Bloemfontein (The place Tolkien was born at), and the legislative, which is Cape Town.

    I stumbled across this because I couldn’t get to sleep and this made me laugh because of the joy of your dad’s experiences in life sharing about Jesus. So riveting 🧐 thanks for sharing. I love to hear wonderful testimonies about how Jesus has impacted lives. ❤️

    Yolande here from South Africa. Absolutely love this interview. As a side note, the capital of South Africa is indeed Pretoria and not Johannesburg.

    Where can I get all or most of Mr.Josh McDowell's debates? Been searching for them since a long time.
    When was I was first faced with the claims made by islam I was really really shook and then the first (professional) debate I ever saw was Mr.Josh McDowell's debate with Ahmed Deedat (Was Christ crucified). 'A 3 hour long video from 1980s? Should I watch it?' Were my first thoughts, but what a blessing it was (& still is)!
    That really laid the foundation for me to venture the habit of asking questions and moreover never being afraid of facing difficult ones.
    What a blessing this man has been for me and surely been for millions!

      The only one I’ve been able to find is with Deedat, unfortunately.

    Love watching your father speak! He's such a delight! I've met him personally about 20 years ago, I'll never forget him approaching me and striking a conversation. He's such an inspiration!
