It is great to see you back on UA-cam, Michael! Thank you for your service in aid work abroad, and I am excited for your new line of filters! Scott is a great guest for these videos, too.
After extensive testing, I decided we go with the classic RF 24-70 2.8. The reasons: 4mm sometimes makes a big difference Close-up (24-70mm - 0.21 meters / 28-70mm - 0.39 meters) Image stabilization 24-70mm - yes / 28-70mm - no) Weight and body size and price difference We consider the 28-70 a lens for 'artists' and not so much for craftsmen or even as a prestige part (you just have to have it - especially because it is/was hard to get) - we need workhorses -
Agreed. The RF 24-70mm is the best version of a 24-70mm lens I have ever used. Super useful, so sharp. And, the tandem IS/IBIS can be game changing too. I have handheld for 4sec at 24mm with that lens on an R5. That is insane. Previously, no lens IS system could ever get that, you'd need a tripod.
great to have you back, Michael! love the laid back, talking about photography content! I'll want the 77mm CPL filter, using on my RF 24-105 should be a breeze so get long exposures and light trails and waterfalls during daytime
I watched your R5&R6 tutorial two years ago (before switching from Pentax). Researched and read everything about the different mirrorless systems and finally decided to go with Canon mirrorless system. Purchased the R5, the RF 70-200mm f2.8, the RF 85mm f1.2, the battery grip and a 1TB Angelbird CFExpress card in September 2021. Been using the system and love it. Shooting events and one wedding. Added the RF 35mm f1.8 Macro a month ago specifically to shoot my nephew's wedding. Also purchased the Jinbei HD-2pro flash, and Jinbei trigger. Added an 82mm B+W 6 stops ND filter for the RF 85mm lens. Glad I watched your tutorial. Did consider the RF 28-70mm but the size and weight were just too much. Been using the RF 70-200mm without any filter. Wouldn't mind attaching a 77mm CPL to it for the front element protection and reduce reflections and /or suppress glare from water surface. Same reason for wanting the 82mm CPL for the RF 82mm lens. Cheers Man Khun
Will be grateful with 77mm CPL for my new RF24-105 coming. For capturing wildlife, flowers, landscapes for pics with inspirational and motivational messages. Blessings for all you’re doing!
I would love the 77mm 10 stop ND filter for lovely blurry waterfall OR whatever else happens to come my way! I use the R6 and R7, and recently got the RF100-500 lens, which is superb! I was one of those that started with the EF100-400 using the adapter, and thought I would not need anything else ... then I went to the RF800 ... and thought I don't need anything else. Now 2 years later after the purchase of the R6, I have added to the arsenal with the RF16mm, RF24-240mm, and the RF18-150 kit lens that came with the R7, in addition to the fabulous RF100-500mm. I am an amateur and hobbyist, but loving the Canon RF line-up for sure! I loved this video and all of your training videos! Thank you for your work abroad, and taking time out to visit with all of us!
Hello! Great video and story regarding the RF 28-70. Glad it worked out in the end. R6 shooter here. I have nearly converted all of my EF glass to RF with only the EF 28mm 1.8 remaining (and I won't get rid of!). I previously had four EF lenses and found that the RF equivalent to be sharper and more convenient to use. I really can relate with the 100-400 vs 100-500L debate as I have the same issue with the 24-240 and the 70-200 2.8L and, to a lesser extent, the 100-500L. The L-glass just magic - especially the 100-500! However, that "magic" comes at a price - that being cost weight. On a couple of occasions, I've had to schlep the two of them on a plane as carry-on to an out-of-state sporting event and that gear got heavy quick! While the 24-240 would have been insufficient to the task, I did miss the convenience of my run & gun setup (24-240 and the Nifty50 - or 85mm f2). That said, I really wish I had the 24-105 - I have the RF24-70L which I love, but would love a tad bit more reach. In the end, it's important the get the gear to suit your use case! My shooting buddy envies my 100-500. I'm going to recommend the RF100-400 to him. Looking forward to seeing more of your useful and informative work. Cheers!
Like all the other comments… so good to see you back! Felt like being in a relaxed conversation with you and Scott. 82mm 3-5 stop ND to take some photos outdoors and record some videos.
Winner! Message me Dean so we can send you a filter: support(at)michaelthemaven - congratulations! (Let us know if you want a magnetic or a threaded filter!)
I decided to purchase the R7 for the 4K 60fps ability as well as the 120 fps with auto focus, eibus, and superior subject tracking and focus.. something my 90D is unable or limited to do.. Another plus is my EF lenses are still compatible with the R7 with an inexpensive adapter... I still love my 90D and will keep it as a great backup camera...
Nice to see you back! Can't wait to get my hands on those filters! Wanted to share some of my own thoughts on the R7. I noticed you mentioned it's not a replacement to the 7Dmkii, which I agree with. In fact I caught quite a bit a flack for saying that prior to the launch as we learned more about what it would be in reality vs what many were hoping for. The lack of more robust sealing, the buffer being a bit weaker than other mirrorless offerings, and the lack of a battery grip option all IMO hold it back from being the replacement many of us expected. That last one, the grip, is something I will just never understand why it was left out (I mean FFS all the XXD cameras had them, even the 10D). At the price point it came in at though, it's fair. For what many of us expected it would have been no less than an additional 500 USD, maybe more. That is just not the right move by Canon ATM, but I could see a higher level model at some point, maybe after the R1 is finally released. Call it the R7S, where it has that build, a better buffer (maybe a CFX slot), a battery grip, and maybe even drop the AA filter to make it a more appealing option to wildlife shooters. That is my current Wishlist, well, other than Maven filters!
I just saw this video and I love it! I dont know if it's too late to enter, however if I had to choose it would be a 77mm for my 70-200mm 2.8. Im getting ready to shoot my first ever wedding in June. If I get selected surprise me, I trust your judgement and I'm not picky. I'd be honored. Thank you for all the tips you guys have provided.
First, brilliant reason to leave us hanging; close friends/colleagues from that part of the globe and what has been going on in Ethiopia is heart breaking. My humble giving back is being a volunteer photographer for the national multiple sclerosis society, and a 77mm CPL for my RF24-105mm or my “classic” EF 20-35 would be brilliant to make their signature orange /green pop.
Winner! Message me so we can send you a filter: support(at)michaelthemaven - congratulations! (Let us know if you want a magnetic or a threaded filter!)
As an 80D owner, that's bumped into some limitations & felt the pull of the R7, this was timely. You're not the first to tout the performance of the RF 100-400 for its price. As one that shoots mostly landscapes, a CPL would bre great! 77mm. Happy to provide shots vs the Breakthrough X1 that's presently in the camera bag.
As the owner of a well used Canon 6D, frannkly the very high cost of L series glass is very, very significant deterrent from purchasing a Canon mirrorless body. Yes, my quality L series and ? Sigma Art primes and the excellent wide angle zooms may be able to used by the Canon OE adapter- but have never been keen on using adapters. Also, totally unimpressed with Canon closing down on third party lens makers. Will just stay with the 6D. Gas poses a real problem.
The EF-RF adapter works flawlessly on my R7 it’s nothing like using my Metabones and adapting Sony to EF, etc. worth renting one and an R body to try it out.
To add to what Steven is saying... The stigma about adapted lenses really doesn't apply in this case (if that is how you are seeing it that is). These stigmas stem from the use of a third party lens on an even thirder party adapter on a first party camera. That is a lot of protocols to get to work together, and it typically leads to less than ideal performance. With the R system, and the RF adapter, on an R camera with EF lenses, its all first party. In fact, the RF protocol is just an extension of the EF protocol, so really, a Canon EF lens on an RF camera with the Canon adapter is basically a native lens. And even third party lenses made for EF work seemingly without flaw too; I have several Tamron and Sigma lenses that adapt just fine where I don't notice any loss of performance, though I suspect stabilization systems probably don't work with the IBIS like an EF or RF lens does (and it is possible that some might be different, I only have so many lens to try out). So if your reluctance stems from these stigmas, just know that they really don't apply here. Again, if that was what you were thinking. As to Canon and third party RF lenses. We don't know what Canon is doing in regards to this. The only examples of Canon telling a lens maker to cease and desist are hardly examples that point to an outright ban of all third party lens makers. If it was Tamron and Sigma saying they got letters, then I would be on board with that. But it isn't. It is a pair of Chinese lens makers that were basically stealing their patented IP. I don't think it was even wrong of them to ask them to stop. I DO however think it is a terrible idea to be silent on the overall matter. Because people are seeing it that way, they are saying "this is a ban on third party lenses!" Regardless of if it is or not that is how people are seeing it, it is absolutely influencing their decisions on what to do in the future. Anyone that knows cameras and lenses at all knows that people probably will stay in a system once they are invested, and Canon knows that probably better than anyone (Rebel series is a HUGE part of their dominance in the market). Allowing this damage to continue without so much as a statement regarding their intentions only seems to be re-enforcing the idea that they aren't going to allow it. And even if they do, it might be so late in the game that people will realize how Sony and Nikon already have this lens support, now, and don't have to wait. They need to say something, and I can't blame you for your hesitance, or anyone else's for that matter.
Thanks for the great video - I've just switched from 90D to R7 and there's no looking back. I would love the 77mm 10 stop ND filter for lovely blurry waterfall and seascape photography.
Hello Michael , I have a T8i and I use the most to photograph my family events, I have the 18-55 and a 50mm 1.8, I would like to buy a lens that give me a more sharp images my budget is 700 dollares what would you recommend ?
Thnx for doing these videos. Good information. Looking for an opinion. Am just an amateur that roams around in forest taking pictures of wild critters (mostly birds). Have an R7 with EF 100-400ii. Next year I should have a few extra $$ for a piece of new used gear. Low light is always my issue. Have wanted to try a FF camera maybe R5/R6. However, then I may need to use a 1.4x which makes me bump my f stop. Is a bigger/better sensor good enough to make it worthwhile? Maybe should use the $$ on an RF100-500 then the next year if have the $$ can get a full frame. thnx
Really good to see you back on the air waves Michael. I would really love to try the 10 stop filter as I have been dong a few long exposure shots of the clouds over the lake and love to capture the whispery cloud movement. I shoot with my Canon R5 and 15-35 RF lens. btw here in Australia I shoot with a few guys and we have the 100-500, it is by far the most amazing combination I've used. Love it!
Great video! However I'm surprised that you didn't mention Canon's approach to 3rd party lenses. Also I am curious on your thoughts on Panasonic's S5 on photo perspective.
Great information in this video. Thank you! I use the R5 with the EF 100-400 and have been seriously considering the RF 100-500. I mostly photograph birds and wildlife but recently started getting into landscape and especially those soft waterfalls. I bought the RF 15-35 f2.8 and love it but need a good filter for it. So, 82 mm 10 stop ND filter for those long exposures. Thank you for all the information you provide. I enjoy the FB pages and the UA-cam videos. I learn a lot! (Btw this is Barb using her husbands account 😉).
What if you have 90d and just 18-135mm lens ? Not yet started getting longer lessons Would it make more sense to trade in for R7 or even R6 II whilst the 90d still has some value ?
Another great video! Would you (or anyone else) HIGHLY recommend the 24-105 f4 for both photos and video? I own an R6 w/the rf 35 f1.8, 50 f1.8, 85 f2, rf 100-400, and also adapting the ef 135 f2, but I’m looking for an affordable zoom, an all around banger… thanks!
Great episode. I’m still Shooting EFs due to budget. Welcome back from your kind service to others. And amazing story about the fraudulent lens! What the heck? I hybrid shoot teen sports and could use a 3 stop (? +/-) ND for video in 77mm. Nice of you to give one to a viewer
Hi Michael! I just subscribed to your channel after listening to your chat about RF lenses! Great info. I also just ordered and received the RF 50mm 1.8 and plan on trying it out today on a family session. I’m really looking forward to seeing how it handles. I would love a polarizing filter because I do a lot of portraits on Keuka Lake and I think it would really help with the reflections! 43mm ❤
I’ve enjoyed your very informative videos and tutorials. I’d love to get an 82mm CPL to use on my R5 and the forgotten little brother to the R7 & 90D, the M6 Mark II, on upcoming family beach vacation.
You make great videos, thanks for posting them and it's good to see you back.. I would love to try a 6 stop for an 82 mm GF45 to 100. Salem Massachusetts has beautiful sunrises over the water,And the witches are descending on our city and I want to get creative with speed lights.
I have a different take: don't sell all your good trusty EF glass until a few years have passed using mirrorless: because i still find uses for them and projects for which i prefer trusty DSLR bodies. Keep both systems
Great news your now making filters a 77mm CPL would be great for my landscape photography thinking of changing my Lee filters to yours so much easier to work with😊
Thank you, Nigel! You can take a look at the Kickstarter here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/michaelthemaven/maven-color-coded-photography-and-videography-filters
77mm CPL. I'll use it on my rf 24-105. I love that lens for everything. Great walk around, travel lens, landscapes, and bokeh is good enough at 105mm for portraits
Interesting video. Amazon was a lot more fun when the things they sold were shipped from their warehouses and not from some 'associate' which may or may not be shipping lead plates. Was your scam lens 'fulfilled' by Amazon or did it come UPS/USPS? I suspect I'm the only one who will ask for this: I would like the CPL in 46mm for use with my Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2:1 macro to see what it does for images of very small (~5mm diameter) ancient silver coins that tend to suffer from glare issues with the standard lighting schemes I use. If you don't have 46mm, I could adapt down a 52mm which would also fit my RF 35mm f/1.8 which I consider a great lens for the money and the purposes I wanted it.
I've got an RF 100-500 lens that I would love to try out the 77mm CPL filter on at airshows. Enjoyed the video and really looking forward to the launch of your filters! Your instruction video on the R5 has really helped too. Thanks.
Would you say the Sigma 18-35mm sharp enough for the R7 thinking about selling my 90D body and getting the R7 and the 100-400 light lense but would love to keep the sigma if its compatible
What an interesting chat Michael.. I have followed your channel for many years now and bought a few digital E tutorials. Those filters look what I am seriously needing.. I use a Zeiss distagon 15mm lens EF on my canon 5DSR .. it has a 95mm filter which I can’t find a polarising filter or a 10 stop … I would be so very grateful for any of those two filters from you please 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I found your struggle with liking both the RF 100-400 and RF 100-500 L interesting because it's the same struggle I have. The 100-400 is so convenient in terms of size and weight and it takes great pictures. I also own the RF 100-500L and so far I haven't found the clear win for it on my R7. Interestingly although seldom mentioned another key win for the 100-400 is that you can use the RF 1.4 extender on it's entire length which is a huge advantage. I will likely pick up the RF 2.0x for the same reason. Should I happen to win the free filter I would like the one that fits the R7 18-150 kit lens ND filter.
@@unknownKnownunknowns it’s not as good as the 100-500, but it’s much cheaper and lighter and it’s a great value. 100-500 is straight up fire but it’s heavy and very expensive. I am telling almost all of my students to at least start with the 100 to 400.
@@unknownKnownunknowns I think renting it and testing it for your needs is a perfect idea! I actually also had an EF 100-400 IS II L that I just sold. I loved that lens on the 90d but for my needs the RF lenses were more attractive. For canoe portaging in the back-country it's hard to beat the combined reach and low weight of the RF 100-400. Let me know how it goes!
OI would dearly love an 82mm CPL to use on my EF 24-70 used with my 90D. I do a lot if seascape and landscape and it would be so great to reduce glare and boost colors. BTW I loved your 90D course. It really helped me get started as a photographer
Michael, if you haven't stopped giving away your filters I'd really love to have a 67mm 10 stop for my 18-135mm. I recently purchased a new 90D and I absolutely love it! I have a small pond behind my house just ahead of a tree line. The tree line has an opening right at one corner of the pond and the most beautiful sunrises that you can imagine come up perfectly in that opening behind the pond. I fiercely want to shoot the sunrise in the mornings over this area but I have to have a filter. I'd really appreciate it if you would please send one to me! Thank you!!
I’ve been wanting to try a 10 stop no filter for super long exposures here around my home town. I think for the last two years I’ve been thinking about it but never actually took the initiative to actually try it. If I were to have the filter though I know I would be out every chance I get for long exposures. My lens has a 72 mm thread.
A great video thank you. Nice to see some budget friendly lenses there. If I had to pick a filter I'd probably say a 77mm cpl to use on my 70-200mm tamron g2 for nature shots. Lobing the content and well done for helping out with the vaccines! A great cause! 👌
Hi, I would really love to try out your filters, I love taking portraits in natural light and would like to try it to reduce the amount of light while shooting in bright light conditions. I would like an 82mm 3 stop density filter. Thank you for all of your helpful videos. Ah, and I’m also looking to get an rf 28-70 soon.
Looking forward to the filters. I would do the 55mm CPL for the 18-150 kit lens on the R7 for travel, leaves, buildings, water, skies. I’m using the Lee filter system currently, and am now seeing all these cool magnetic ones which would be so much easier to use. Question for you. I bought the RF 100-500mm and for the life of me cannot get it to focus on anything. It hunts around worse than my Fuji. Is there any way to tell if it’s the camera or the lens? The R7 focuses better with the kit lens but I also cannot get the eye detect to work on either lens. I went through the settings you suggested in your tutorial and it still does not work. Do you think the camera is defective or the lens?
Great information here. 82mm 10 stop ND for long exposures. I just recently bought the RF 15-35 f2.8 for my R5 and I’m loving it. I’ve been in search of a great filter for it. I have been heavy into bird and wildlife photography for a while but recently getting into landscape and especially those soft water shots. 😊
As soon as Canon restricted options for its customers in lens choice...I don't consider them anymore. I can't support a company which undercuts its customers.
It is great to see you back on UA-cam, Michael! Thank you for your service in aid work abroad, and I am excited for your new line of filters! Scott is a great guest for these videos, too.

One potential problem with the RF100-400mm is it is not weather sealed. Also consider the RF 200-800mm for wildlife photography.

Maybe should use the $$ on an RF100-500 then the next year if have the $$ can get a full frame. thnx
82mm 10 stop ND for beautiful British landscape long exposures 😍
Not yet started getting longer lessons
Would it make more sense to trade in for R7 or even R6 II whilst the 90d still has some value ?
Another great video! Would you (or anyone else) HIGHLY recommend the 24-105 f4 for both photos and video? I own an R6 w/the rf 35 f1.8, 50 f1.8, 85 f2, rf 100-400, and also adapting the ef 135 f2, but I’m looking for an affordable zoom, an all around banger… thanks!
The RF version- YES! It’s my ride or die on my R5. The EF version - No
@@michaelandrew5209 Thanks for the reply!
Great episode. I’m still
Shooting EFs due to budget.
43mm ❤
Hi Cathy- Thank you for the message! We have filters including CPLs and CDs coming in the 43mm. Best wishes!
I would love one of those filters in size 77 mm. I would use it to blur the waves coming onto icy beach in Iceland among bergs. Thanks
Any noticeable drawbacks of using the EF lenses on the R mount cameras esp at the wider focal lengths?
77mm CPL. I'll use it on my rf 24-105. I love that lens for everything. Great walk around, travel lens, landscapes, and bokeh is good enough at 105mm for portraits
100% agree. Before I got mine, I was mostly 24 to 70 2.8 user, and I was really skeptical about the 24 to 1 05 but it turns out it’s just awesome
Love my 28-70. I take lots landscape to capture our hanging seasons. Would love to try a 95mm nd filter1 to 3 stops to capture those Percy mornings.
You know I have been following you through the missions you did if people follow you. But it’s also a responsible to help others and do your best
77mm cpl on my R7 with the RF 100 - 500 shooting wild life and closeup
I've got an RF 100-500 lens that I would love to try out the 77mm CPL filter on at airshows. Enjoyed the video and really looking forward to the launch of your filters! Your instruction video on the R5 has really helped too. Thanks.
Nice to see you after long time. I want 67mm Veri ND Filter 5stop for my video work.
Hello Michael, interested in a 77mm CPL for my RF 24-105mm, I shoot mostly landscapes and cityscapes, greetings from France 😊👍🏻🇫🇷
Would you say the Sigma 18-35mm sharp enough for the R7 thinking about selling my 90D body and getting the R7 and the 100-400 light lense but would love to keep the sigma if its compatible
Yes it’s sharp enough
67 mm10 stop ND filter for beautiful loooooong exposures (water, removing people from images)
Yessssss! Thank you Tom!
Great point about the extender!
Amazing that you find the 100-400 as good as the 100-500. I haven’t tried either but will
Rent both on your endorsement
72mm CPL for landscapes on my Fuji 10-24. (Looking forward to the kickstarter - I want the whole set, really.)
I will be posting several videos over the next couple days about the filters and their features - there is nothing like them anywhere!
A 67mm 3-stop ND Filter would be great! Id use it for long exposures such as: Light trails, water etc
Thank you DJ!
Hi. Great video.
72mm, 6 stops, ND Filters for my 70-200 f/4 mkii, to do some videos on showjumping horse events without get it overexposed.
good video
if i win , i use a 82mm in my R7 , 3 stop or more con my cynebloom filter.
A great video thank you. Nice to see some budget friendly lenses there. If I had to pick a filter I'd probably say a 77mm cpl to use on my 70-200mm tamron g2 for nature shots. Lobing the content and well done for helping out with the vaccines! A great cause! 👌
77mm 10-stop Vnd or nd if you don’t have 10-stop Vnd filter. If you need a beta tester, I can help that way too.
If other lenses are working ok, it’s likely the lens
Does using full frame lenses on apsc camera makes the picture less sharp than using apsc lens?
Nope!
RF 24-70 f2,8. 82 mm filter thread.
Oh I’m staying EF for a reason but top reason is I never got to test 90D yet so
Hey Micheal how to I buy the filters thanks ric😊
Thank you! Here is the link: www.kickstarter.com/projects/michaelthemaven/maven-color-coded-photography-and-videography-filters
72mm 10 stop ND for long exposures
Great information here. 82mm 10 stop ND for long exposures. I just recently bought the RF 15-35 f2.8 for my R5 and I’m loving it. I’ve been in search of a great filter for it. I have been heavy into bird and wildlife photography for a while but recently getting into landscape and especially those soft water shots. 😊
If the time to upgrade is when I'm making money then I'd never upgrade LOL!
As soon as Canon restricted options for its customers in lens choice...I don't consider them anymore. I can't support a company which undercuts its customers.
The EF macros will always be made.
Exact 300th like 😍🥳
May your good deed brings about good karma to you.
