  • For many people the question of whether or not women are treated more unfairly than men in society is so obvious that it would be obscene to challenge the assumption. But if we are genuinely interested in creating a more equal society, then as society develops our biases should be routinely reevaluated with sober eyes. How should the issues that affect men, such as conscription, incarceration rates, suicide rates, circumcision, custody issues, steroid use, low university attendance rates, poor school performance, etc, enter into the gender equality discussion? In this episode of the podcast I speak with Professor of Economics, Bryan Caplan from George Mason University. Bryan uses a range of techniques and tools from economics to analyse today's most important social issues from a quantitative standpoint. We discuss whether the status of women as a victim class still remains compatible with an evidence based approach to building a fairer, more empathetic, and more egalitarian society in 21st century western democracies.

These conversations are supported by the Andrea von Braun foundation (www.avbstiftung.de/), as an exploration of the rich, exciting, connected, scientifically literate, and (most importantly) sustainable future of humanity. The views expressed in these episodes are my own and those of my guests. In this episode I am particularly interested in understanding the great strides that have gone into creating the fair and just (although not perfect) societies that we in the west are fortunate to live in today. What steps should we be taking to protect what we have, and to continue developing a society in which all members are able to flourish?

it s funny that you look for a feminist AFTER making an episode about feminism with a man that is famous for his antifeminist positions… very scientific also considering all the authors specialised in gender studies and feminist studies in universities all around the world that you could have ask to interview… who talked about bias??

I'm willing to hear those specialists out and consider their ideas, but I don't see any reason to just presuppose that they know better. In addition to all the normal metascientific caveats, the general reasons why we should have respect science basically don't apply to these fields.
For instance, with medicine, we can point to many diseases we've eliminated and many life-saving procedures being performed every day. 2/3rds of medicine doesn't replicate, and maybe a lot of spending on medicine is just wasteful signalling games, but there's undeniably _something_ real going on somewhere in there.
With gender- and feminist studies, there doesn't seem to be anything like that. The victories all seem political and self-referential. "Our theory convinced elites that [X] is important, so they implemented policy changes to increase [X], which according to our theory is good."

@@robertachiroli7826 Isn't that the logical order to do things in? Usually you want to let the defender speak/reply second...

I do have a recommendation. Naomi Wolf. She is nice, warm hearted, and open to logical mature discussions and evidence. You can actually have a sensible conversation with her she won't just act like a crazy 6 year old.

Feminism's biggest error is to assume that, just because most men are at the top of business/politics, men must have DESIGNED it that way.
