- (Minor Spoilers) A review and analysis of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, one of the greatest games of all time! By Casen Sperry
Talk to me on Twitter! @casensperry
This time, we go deep into the division between Square and Nintendo after their final collaboration. This game combined the best that both companies had to offer and the result was nothing short of amazing.
Mallow, Geno and Peach join Mario on his most unique and immersive journey to date! There might even be a surprise character who fights with Mario for the first time ever... but what could Bowser gain from helping Mario? This game, Developed by Square and published by Nintendo, is the most important entry in the relationship between the two companies. Mario RPG is always an emotion experience for me. The attachment I feel with these characters is immeasurable. Yoko Shimomura composed the music for this game, which has one of the best soundtracks in the history of video games. I use nothing but her OST for Mario RPG in this video. She later went on to compose the soundtrack for Kingdom Hearts. Mario RPG was quickly overshadowed by Mario 64 which came out just a couple of months later. Sequels to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars include Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi series. Since Square Enix owns the rights to Mario RPG, its world and characters (Mallow, Geno, etc.) there never was a Super Mario RPG 2.
This is one of the best, most underrated games ever made, and my personal favorite. I understand that most companies would give anything to have a game sell 2 million copies. But for Nintendo, this is just the 42nd best selling “Mario” game of all time. 42nd. Yes, this game is SEVERELY underrated. It flies just under the radar due to the shadow of Square’s bigger hits on the Playstation, and Nintendo’s “other” Mario game, Mario 64. Bet you’ve never heard anyone refer to Mario 64 as the “other” Mario game from 1996. Not to knock that game at all, though. It changed gaming forever and effectively ushered in the 3D era for Nintendo, and really provided a framework for many subsequent video games in general. But in my mind, Mario RPG shines bright in the midst of both Nintendo and Square’s Golden Era’s; The time when both companies were at the very forefront of the gaming revolution; resulting in an outright masterpiece.
Games featured in this video: Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Legend of Legaia, Mario 64, Mario & Luigi, Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Individuals mentioned: Shigeru Miyamoto, Yoko Shimomura, Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu, Hiroshi Yamauchi, Satoru Iwata, Yoshihiko Maekawa, Chihiro Fujioka, Hisashi Suzuki
Music used: Super Mario RPG Original Soundtrack composed and arranged by Yoko Shimomura. Who is a beast.

The remake was just announced. This is one topic that will absolutely need your commentary.
Mario RPG. 'Nuff Said.

Aight
Yes, that's what the video is about.
It's special. It's a true mario game. They nailed it all
All the background knowledge is super interesting, the review is like its own story
+Rad Radish Thanks, Jordan!
After Mario RPG and Kingdom Hearts, I felt like Square could make a great RPG out of anything. These days, I'm just hoping they'll make a great RPG out of Final Fantasy! /rimshot
+Living Myth Bingo. I don't know exactly what happened, but they certainly aren't the same company they were
I think the major issue is that Squenix has just gotten WAY too over-ambitious for their own good. They'll spend the budget and efforts necessary to produce 10 Hollywood blockbusters developing one game, and end up with a final product that's extremely flashy but nowhere near as enjoyable as their single-digit classic entries. I mean, for Christ's sake, before Final Fantasy XIII was even out, they were planning to do some big compilation like they did with VII (which has also been milked to death), and Final Fantasy XV was originally gonna be one of those XIII spin-offs..... it took about a decade for the damn thing to come out. Honestly, I just learned to stop caring. I see everyone going crazy over the 3rd Kingdom Hearts game that's finally (maybe) gonna come out this console generation (despite initially being announced during the PS2 era), or that VII remake that's being divided into separate parts (the first one of which still hasn't been released after being announced about 5 years ago...... for a remake of a pre-existing game, and a portion of one at that), and I'm just sitting here thinking "Meh, I've got a backlog to attend to."
they shoulda stuck to the same basic formula of the ps1 games but with better graphics, but not putting all of their effort into graphics. i'm sure most of us would gladly sacrifice graphics a little for a large world map full of towns and areas to go to like 7, 8, and 9. hell i would rather have a new ff with ps1 graphics than ff15.
BlackThorne 2001 For XVI they should just go back to its roots and make it like 1-6 and make it Sprite based. I don’t really care for amazing graphics when it comes to these games, the sprites will give it that classic feel.
swoosh
real talk tho companies are made of people, and people get tired / older / lose interest. hard to believe but its true
This was my first RPG and easily one of my favorites. I make it a point to beat it once a year. The music is some of the best I have ever heard in any video game. Mallow was my favorite character. I absolutely love his story arc, and development. Thank you so much for reviewing this game, it is a wonderful ending to my Thursday.
+Joshua Sherman Glad I could end your Thursday well! The soundtrack is amazing. I actually have the OST incorporated into my music shuffle on my phone. Thanks for the comment! And you're welcome for the review!
Me too lol this game got me into rpgs
I remember playing this at funcoland with my dad and the employee watch me play the beginning. I said yes, my dad said yes. I don't even remember how my dad and I got to funcoland, but we both loved the opening. Dad helped me with the tadpole music section, since I had no sense of rhythm at the time, and the sunken ship riddle. You and I don't know each other, but it's great we had a good time with this game
Seeking Dreams Through the Window of the Stars is one of my favorite tracks to this date. It is absolutely amazing!
+SwankyBox Isn't it incredible?? It just blows my mind how good a 16 bit score can be. So good
This game has such a special place in my heart. It brings me back immediately to that time era. I can literally feel the energy and emotions. I can smell the summer breeze. Damn.
😭
Same
Love the way the cut scenes you took from the game reflect what you're saying at any given time. That's a little bit of awesome sauce right there!
And the Music too.
one of the greatest rpgs ever made everyone should play this game
Your use of in-game footage during your monologue was downright genius in the way that it all correlated somehow, even obliquely, to what you were saying. The timing was great! I appreciate that attention to detail, because that's where I tend to get bogged down the most in editing!
This channel has some of the most introspective, high-quality, and well-written reviews you can find on UA-cam. Never disappointing in the slightest.
+5carecrow94 Thank you! We're trying our best to do something different than the typical gaming channel. I'm glad you enjoy it!
Watching this after the nintedo direct today!! Thanks for this!
Love all RPG's. This by far was not my first RPG to play when it came out. But it is one of my most beloved ones. you do a great job reviewing. A professional company should pick you up. They ALL are in need of a deep and effective reviews.
+damien holliday Good to hear you can come from RPG's into Mario RPG and still enjoy it! It was my first, so my experience was a bit different. It's true, most reviews aren't as analytical or deep as the ones we try and put together. I think that's what makes us stand out!
I remember seeing this game in a gaming magazine when I was a kid as well. I saw it at our local GameStop, and pleaded with my mom to get it for us. My brother and I played it non-stop. It was the first game I stayed in from 5:00pm-3:00am playing. I would love to see a resurgence of it on the Switch. But I guess with SquareEnix and Nintendo having some issues, we might not get that.
Your wish came true today!! Remastered and looking absolutely beautiful with cutscenes and all. 🤩🥳
I remember being a kid around the same age as you were and having very similar feelings when my parents rented this game for me from the local video store. I had no idea what an RPG was and pronounced it "Arppggg". Thanks for this masterful history lesson and review.
+Matt Siemens Glad you appreciated it! "Super Mario aarrppggg....? welp, sounds fun!" Haha
I rented it as a 6 year old. I didn't know what an RPG was. I just thought I missed jumping on an enemy and it sucked me into a bad place where I couldn't jump. Hahaha
"With all the moves he makes, you'll need double jointed thumbs."
- Game informer (Mario 64 tagline) 1996
I donno why or how I remember reading that in a mag being stoked about M64. I was 11 years old.
I loved the timed button battle system. Nothing else has really had this, but people have brought this concept to other games, where it didn't actually exist. Such as throwing pokeballs in pokemon.
I genuinely hope this channel grows and grows in popularity, for the sole purpose of keeping you motivated to continue making these excellent videos. The quality of the content that this channel produces is ridiculously high, relative to the number of views. Please keep this up. There is no direction for this channel to go but up with the effort and quality control evident here. Your content is a rare gem among rubble.
+MagicGiblet Thank you! We'll keep going! We have a schedule now to keep us perfectly consistent, so things should move forward at a good pace for both us and the viewers! Glad to have you with us!
If this game gets a remake it would be cool to see Square-Enix and alphadream to make it on the Switch. This game is responsible for spawning the Paper Mario and the Mario and Luigi series.
Also, the Mario and Luigi artstyle would look good in a Super Mario rpg remake.
Well look what just happened! 🤩
My first RPG, and I didn't even know what RPGs were or what they stood for but this one became one of my favorites
+Spooknight Studios Exactly! Me neither, but this was such a good intro into them
I could have gone waaay deeper into the Square / Nintendo split, but I think I'll just save that whole deal for another video
- Casen
+Dark Pixel Gaming This sounds like a very interesting topic just based on the review alone. Had no idea Square convinced others not the develop for Nintendo
+Christopher Black Yeah, they convinced several other companies to go to PlayStation, but most decided to develop for both Nintendo and Sony. Square shot themselves in the foot a bit
+Dark Pixel Gaming Interesting review, very well researched and terrifically edited. Not sure if it was necessary to go into the subsequent history of the Nintendo/Square split. The game itself wasn't affected by the division and it wasn't the cause of it either. Perhaps that would have been more relevant to a review of Paper Mario or Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, while the focus here could been how both companies developed their budding cooperation and how Super Mario RPG was the manifestation of that peaking partnership.
Still, great work. Really hope it's given you a thirst for reviewing games. Did Mike call dibs on covering Secret of Mana?
+Matski Says That was actually something I suggested he cut early on in the process, but ended up changing my mind about it later once I saw the footage he had chosen to go with it. Despite the fact that it may not be completely, 100% relevant to Super Mario RPG, I find it a fascinating topic and I didn't feel like it slowed the momentum of the video enough to require cutting it. Also, yes, I'm going to be covering the Mana series. Casen is going to do Kingdom Hearts though. -Mike
I was surprised that you didn't mention the abandoned Nintendo / Sony collaboration of the SNES CD Rom. Squaresoft wasted a lot of time and resources on the original version of Seiken Densetsu 2 (aka Secret of Mana), and I've recently heard early designs for Chrono Trigger (which may have started as the same project as SoM), only to have to throw most of their work away after Nintendo decided to bail on the system. I'd imagine that was more than enough for Nintendo to temporarily ruin their relationship with Squaresoft.
Supposedly, Secret of Mana was nearly complete for the SNES CD Rom, and they had to cut more than half of the game when they ported it to the SNES instead (this explains why the story often foreshadows scenes that just seem to be completely missing, such as some of the Dyluck story). Here is a Gamefaqs conversation about it, but you can also find interviews with the people involved back in the day with a bit of research: www.gamefaqs.com/boards/588646-secret-of-mana/59583871
How amazing would it be if a copy of the CD Rom version of Seiken Densetsu 2 existed out their somewhere?
...Just in case you didn't already know :)
BTW, I absolutely love your Final Fantasy series of video reviews. They are very in depth and focus strictly on the most interesting points. I tend to agree with all of your pros and cons for each game. You even point out a lot of things I hadn't considered, but completely agree with, which is very insightful. I think your UA-cam views will continue to grow because of the high quality, including the way that the video demonstrates what the narrator is saying. I wonder if you could somehow get the attention of Gamespot, IGN, or another gaming website to get more traffic. Please keep up the amazing work!
I love the little allusions to your nararration by the various in-game texts. A nice touch!
I abandoned this game about 25 years ago when I first tried it. You’ve inspired me to try it again. Can’t wait to see how it goes now that I’m older :)
You did an awesome job, man. Great work like always. I didn't expect you to go into detail about the history between Square and Nintendo, but I liked it a lot. Super Mario RPG is definitely one of the greatest games of all time.
+William Diaz Thanks William! I was debating whether I should keep the historical part, but this game was the end of an era for both companies so I just had to include it. Glad you enjoyed it!
OMG I have NOT heard anyone recently mention 'Incredible Universe' some of my childhood moments were in there since my father would always take me there with him! You earned a sub with this video too. Mario RPG forever.
one of my favorite games ever. sparked my interest in rpgs despite not even being able to understand english back then. have replayed it many times since then, remains great
Wow, great review and background information. I'm really enjoying the channel. Keep up the good work.
I really appreicte you putting the time games were released into context in reviews!
+Elijah 8 No problem! It was a while ago so people can forget how different things were back then. Thanks!!
What a beast review.
+Mike Brown Oh you mean this old thing? Naaah, don't mention it
I love your editing style, it's very effective at keeping viewer attention :)
+Precision Thanks for noticing! Can take some time, but glad you appreciate it
Okay wow, you guys are producing pretty interesting reviews of high quality! Glad I found your channel. Keep going!
+step2mor We will! Thanks for watching :)
Your story is one that really resonates with my childhood experience of this games as well. It was such a surprise and created a lifelong love of RPGs and their immersive play style. Thank you for all the great history and narrative that you brought to this review.
Good job, Casen. I really enjoyed your review. Glad you're joining Mike on this channel. Keep up the good work!
+Jason Dalton Thanks Jason! Glad you enjoyed it. I'll be doing at least one video a month
An excellent review. This game is an exemple of a great RPG, a timeless classic. The way your team review games like these is incredible ! Revives so many good memories.
Even nowadays I still play time classics good RPG games like these.
+Dhiego Keesley Thanks! We definitely try hard to bring those timeless classic's back to the forefront. Game today are good, but the timeless games of the 90's are even better.
...what an amazing review, a game that holds a place in my heart, a game that's one of my favorites of all time. thank you so much!
+DemonSlayerVII You're welcome! Glad you feel the same way I do about it
Was looking for a new video game channel to subscribe to. Found this video and love the way you presented it. Got yourself a new subscriber mate.
Man.... I have spent 2 hours watching your reviews. Seriously... I love your knowledge and passion that goes into these reviews. I appreciate your hard work. Please keep it up man!
Who's here because of the Switch Announcement for Super Mario Rpg for Switch?
This video is gonna get some influx !
Can't wait to play this on switch , never played it but it always appealed to me.
And the backstory you provide on this video make me more curious.
I still have Super Mario RPG for my old Super Nintendo console. Just last month I played my save file it still works
+Patrick D Dude! I can't get my old SNES to work, but somehow my old NES still works!
The wait for this being on the switch is killing me. Love Super Mario RPG.
Nice break down. Your review really drives the quality and history behind this game home!
Love your review videos, so much depth and yet so entertaining. Keep it up - Fan!
+Prowensworld Thank you!! Will do these as long as possible
Samurai #1: You disrespected me. DIE!
Samurai #2: NO!!! YOU disrespected me!!! HRNGHHHH!!!

Humanity in a nutshell.
All of your videos are top notch, thank you for this excellent content x)
This is one of those games that I always tell myself I'm going to play but have never ever picked up.
+Kenny “PoogiBear” McLean Man, you would LOVE it!!
One of my favorite adventures I've ever been on. This is one of those games that transports me back to my childhood years. In my opinion this game is a complete masterpiece, and was only possible due to the magical time we were living in then, when videogames still had that mystifying air about them
It's good to see you giving the music the proper props. This game was awesome. Awe-some
The graphics and overall presentation in this game were so damn good, it actually looks better than a lot of N64 and Playstation games. IIRC, they were able to do this because the cartridge itself actually has a processor in it that's more powerful than the one in the system. Tech had advanced so quickly since the Super NES had released that they could actually afford to put this chip into the cartridge (it might have cost them something like an additional 10 bucks per cartridge if I had to guess). It's actually a major hardware upgrade for the system. A lot of the best late super NES games did this, I think usually with the same hardware. Yoshi's Island, Starfox, Stunt Race FX, and the DK series are the others I can remember which did this.
I love this game. I often think about it again whenever summer rolls around, 21 years ago, I was playing this, renting it for two days every week, getting my progress lost or all over the place because other people were playing it from the rental store. This was definitely one of my favorite SNES games, only narrowly losing out to a few of the other masterpiece RPGs Like Final Fantasy IV and VI, and Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals.
I want this game to see a rerelease on the eStore and a proper sequel from both Square Enix and Nintendo. This game. Amazing.
I LOVE this game. It's really a work of art with an entertaining story, beautiful graphics that imo have stood the test of time and the music is just amazing. What i like the most is that you can do more damage with timed hits. It keeps you involved when in battle, not like most rpgs where you mostly end up mashing buttons when grinding fo XP.
i am very seriouse wen i say this , when i was a little kid playing this game for the first time and watching how BOWSER joined your party , my mind was fuking blowend away , hes one of my favorite characters in the super mario franchise if not my favorite , and this game should ( deserves) a direct sequel !
+Aidan It won't let me respond to you, for some reason. Thanks Aidan! We definitely take a different approach than most gaming channels. Glad you like it!
What a great and personal review :) I feel like playing Snes now. Thanks 4 making this
+Björn Jensen Thanks you! If this review results in you dusting off that old SNES, I consider it a success.
I love these, they're more of a retrospective than a review
Dude your shout out to Incredible Universe was so random, I had a nostalgic trip and remember that store in Oregon, including a babysitting room for kids where they can check out an SNES, Genesis and NES games to play until their parents came to pick them up. That store became Future Shop and then it disappeared. Your review first and foremost is excellent. It captures my close feelings with the game in terms of music, gameplay, and importance in my life as a musician who was learning to hone his skills at 8 years old with something called perfect pitch. Thank you for doing this game justice! I await my 3rd digital purchase of this game on switch lol
Excellent review of one my favourite games of all time! Love that back story as it is very relevant to the story of what Mario RPG really meant to the gaming industry at the time.
I’ve learned so much from you on a subject I thought I knew everything . It’s humbling and great at the same time . PLEASE don’t stop , keep the reviews coming . I wouldn’t mind getting some enix games reviewed .. old school dragon warriors etc .
Another company I really loved at the time was koei
You got this right on every level. I remember when I got an SNES for Xmas when I was in 6th grade (completely unexpected). This game and Chrono Trigger - these soundtracks, visuals, stories everything were so fantastic and emotional that I am still hard-pressed to find a game since that I would play over and over and over again, probably til I die.
+hikarugatheoriginal Can't agree more. The games of the SNES era are simply the greatest games ever made. Chronotrigger, Mario RPG, FFVI, Yoshi's Island, Secret of Mana. Can't beat 'em
You know, I almost mentioned Yoshi's Island, but didn't for some reason! I will say, though, I never thought Secret of Mana was all that great. It may have been because I played it like....waaaaaaaaaaay after all the others you've mentioned above, along with Breath of Fire and Illusion of Gaia, but I don't know. Perhaps you could do a Secret of Mana review!
+hikarugatheoriginal Oh, a secret of Mana review is coming! Maybe later this year though.
FANTASTIC! Keep up the good work ^_^
+hikarugatheoriginal Thanks!!
I friggin love your videos! deserve way more subscribers
+Jake Cade Thanks, Jake! I'm glad you're enjoying them. We'll keep them coming, don't worry!
I've been looking for such a great review of this game thanks.
+Doctor whooo? You're welcome! Thanks for the comment! This game means a lot to me
Dark Pixel Gaming Yeah I was looking for a review of this game its very old so it wasn't easy to find so I just gave up a few month later I see this I watch it and I feel it, almost perfect review but I would have liked if you talked about the story.
Well written and review game. I remember being super psyched when this game first came out and I was mad that Blockbuster always were out of stock in terms of renting it. I only played it once and didnt make it too far. Everything you review was spot on from the music, the characters and the overall storyline. My favorite memory is always Prince Peach and her array of weapons she uses (gloves, frying pan and war fan). I am intrigued by the beginning segment with Square and Nintendo's falling out. I think I would like to watch a video of more in depth in the future should that come along.
+Danny Simion Thanks! I think I'll make a whole video about that one of these days. Glad you liked it! Haha, I think this is where Smash Bros got the idea for Peach to use a frying pan and parasol and stuff for her. Man, you gotta play the game again, it's a trip! Still fun today
So happy I discovered this channel :)
Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 are now on the Nintendo Switch.
This whole review (and its description that killed the suspense) explains why Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars is universally phenomenal in a nutshell. 8D
Your damn this is a true legend
Loved the video!! Learned a lot from this video!!
It’s amazing how video games could hold such a place in Your heart. I can’t see that kids playing COD nowadays are going to think back about how much it impacted their childhood.
A beautiful and timeless masterpiece. It's always hot cocoa feeling with this.
Wow. This review is like the game: fantastic in all manners. Good voiceover, well written, etc. I remember playing this as a kid. Now I feel the need to dig out my SNES. Thanks a lot, Dark Pixel.
(Oh, and you've earned a new subscriber.)
I called this game "Little Mario". I was 4 when I first got this game and didn't know how to read. Glad I got it for Christmas that year.
That story is sweeettt!! I LOVE YOUR VIDS SO MUCH
My second RPG ever, and the one game that got me into RGPs in general. The memories. I swear I got all teary-eyed at the end, it was simply that beautiful. All that humor, all that CHARM; without a doubt, my favorite mario game EVER.
loved the video thank you for making another solid review.
+ni No problem! They'll just keep coming
I had no clue that Yoko Shimomura did the music for Super Mario RPG! I ended up memorizing her name after the wonderful work she did in KH, especially the masterpiece of music in KH3, but I didn't know she had started as far back as SMRPG. Ugh, no wonder the music was so good
4:00 holy shit, I'm wearing headphones at night in my room and that scared the shit out of me since my door is right behind me
5:24 Yeah, it is! LOL! Great background anyway!
this series is like a love letter to the games I grew up on :)
Thanks Fred!!
0:00 to 5:30 "You gon' learn today!" ~Casen
+DrSnarkface Haha there's just no way around it. You gotta understand Square and Nintendo if you wanna understand Mario RPG! Simple as that!
the cleaning the house story
lol thats how me and my brother got GBA's
It helped we were taking the annual cross country road trip to grandmas that week too but hey,
Good times, good times..
I would crap myself if they made a real sequel together using the same style but in full HD!
+kbutta01 Me too! I would pay so much to be able to play that. I wonder if Nintendo and Square would ever consider it, at this point.
I don't see why not! It's foolish to not at least consider it at this stage in gaming history. Everyone loves remakes and remasters of older games why not take it to the next level and make everyone happy!
I know. I hope this has come up at every board meeting, every month for the past 20 years. Honestly though, I don't know if Square or Nintendo really have the capacity to make a game like this again. Even if they wanted to
+Dark Pixel Gaming I certainly wish they would figure it out. This game always deserved a "proper" sequel. Square-enix has been slowing getting it's head back in the game lately. Let's hope they continue on this path and finally heal the wounds they each caused each other. Nintendo need some serious help right now I think. May I ask whats your personal favorite game form any genre?
+kbutta01 Hope so! My favorite game ever forever is Mario RPG. It just came at the perfect time for me. Other include FF6, 7 and 9, and basically every Zelda game.
This was awesome. I was recently interested into one day making my own Nintendo game reviews, and this kinda inspired me a little bit to see people still willing to give those things chances (and be pretty decent at it)!
+\\\\\THE LOU\\\\\ Thank you! These games deserve to be revisited again and again. So many gamers on UA-cam have never played this era of video games and it's very unfortunate. You should absolutely make a channel and review older games!
It’s amazing how in this day and age Final Fantasy is back on Nintendo Systems with 7, 9, 10, 10-2 and 12 and strangely 8 is missing (Yes Square has supposedly lost the source code to 8) this video made me cry just hearing about how close Nintendo and Square was and how they made an amazing baby back in the day, I really wish they could get back in a relationship together and make a second child and it being an actual Super Mario RPG 2. Nintendo and Rare’s relationship is also worth mentioning as they made great games together like the Donkey Kong Country Trilogy, Killer Instinct, Banjo & Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Conker’s Bad Fur Day and even Starfox Adventures on GameCube.
Another great review . I finally found someone that loves square/squaresoft/Square/Enix as much as I do .
the "cleaning up the house" part was hilarious! I can totally picture it and relate! I adore this game!
When I first got it I spent a whole weekend stuck to a chair, no shower, almost not eating, no nothing, just playing this game, what a nerd! haha
Very nice review, I am actually replaying through this game again. I played it so much when I was probably 11 or 12, i'm glad I got to experience it back then because like you said it was equally hard to find the game haha
I may have watched this like 3 separate times, very well made video. There isn't too much good content for smrpg.
On the credit roll I saw Tetsuya nomura on the credits. Now that's badass
Your channel is excellent. The videos are informative and well made. -- AT
I paid $30 on ebay almost 10 years ago for a copy of this game. Wish I would have kept it. Can't imagine what they go for now.
Tyler Smith not as much as CHRONO trigger
Emulators are your friend.
Kederen must people don’t want emulates
Tyler Smith try 80 to 120 depending on the time of year
I fucking love Super Mario RPG. It was one of my favorites as a kid and still holds up today. What a great review. New sub!
13:16 That's a big ass HAMMER!
Still holding out hope for an eventual Thousand Year Door review!
9:47 That's not Frogfucious. That's a frog who sells you items in Seaside Town. =P
Great review! Can I suggest you guys review Suikoden or Suikoden 2? The whole series would be great, but 2 is where that series shines the brightest.
+TheMetalGaia Mike has plans plans for those games later on this year, actually!
+Dark Pixel Gaming really? Awesome!
He did them
Would you say this was Woolsey's best translation? I think this is the first vid of yours where he wasn't ruthlessly savaged 😂
This was great! Thank you. This is one of my favorite games of all time, I really wish they would release it on the switch!!!
Speaking of Yoko Shimamura, it would be awesome to hear your thoughts about legend of mana. One of my favorite OSTs of all time
The reason Nintendo didn't use CD based media at the time was because of tech disadvantages in their case and honestly, I think even SquareSoft back then knew that to be the case for Nintendo. The problem in Nintendo's case would be the fact that they'd have license out their finances to other companies capable of producing such tech which would've resulted in a very expensive system.
The reason Sony was able to get away with releasing such expensive CD based tech at the $299 price point at the time was because the PlayStation was a product made in house and not out-sourced like the Sega Saturn and other disc based systems were.(fun fact, Sega was losing $100 (and eventually $200 down the line) off of each unit sold)
If Nintendo had their own factories capable of producing such tech for themselves, without a doubt they would've gone with CD's. Nintendo was fully well aware of the benefits of CD media and much more useful it would have been; heck, even Shigeru Miyamoto and Koji Kondo had positive thoughts about what the N64 would've been like had it been a Disc based system from the start.
But the reality was that Nintendo was also well aware of the cons to expensive tech like that in their case and Nintendo's known for not wanting to sell expensive hardware; especially at a loss like Sega and others had a habit of doing because it would've cost them money big time in their case.
To give a quote by Ken Kutaragi(the father of the PlayStation) had said to Hideki Sato(president of Sega's former hardware manufacturing division at the time), It can basically be summed up like this: "Hideki-Chan(he refers to him using the "Chan" diminutive) Hideki Chan, you guys at Sega don't stand a chance against us here at Sony. Let me ask you something, where are you guys getting you processors from? Where are you guys getting your format from? The answer is right in front of you. You're buying them from Hitachi, you're buying them from Yamaha, you're buying them from JVC! What about about your CD ROM hard-drives? You guys are buying EVERYTHING!"
Continuing on: "By buying from Hitachi and JVC, those two companies are the ones profiting off the Saturn with your name on it! To put it simply, you guys buy everything and you can't make anything yourselves. We here at Sony can make everything ourselves; including custom parts. We have our own factories"(Ken Kutaragi had more to say on the issue at hand but the rest is too long as it already is).
Point is, is that if Nintendo did what Sega and others did, their brand would've been tarnished because of how expensive an N64 CD based system would've been because they would've had to buy everything from another company capable of producing such tech Nintendo wasn't able to produce themselves; and the companies Nintendo would've had to outsource to would've been the ones profiting off of said system with Nintendo's name on it. So in Nintendo's case it was like, which "poison" is least likely to affect their brand image in the long run? Cartridges or expensive CD?
Just want to say, I really like your spoiler free reviews.
Great review.
This game was my gateway drug into rpg's and square...
I was about 10 when I first played it. It opened up my world to what rpg's were.
Next came ff7-9, ff tactics, chrono cross, saga frontier 2, breath of fire 3... 1997 - 2000 to me were the golden years of gaming.
