My first Grateful Dead cassette was Europe 72, my mom died and I was just lost. I was 13 years old and one of her friends said listen to this. He just pitched it to me. Then and there 1992 Alabama, i became a Deadhead
Bobby, I try to steal your chords all the time but, you have the most fucked up unique style, I cant figure your shit out half of the time, LOL. AWESOME!
Right? I never know what chords he seems to be playing, unless its an acoustic song and sometimes even those ones look impossible to cover, LOL. His hands always look melted :D
John Riley agreed......! He don't play no normal chords. I rememeber back in '77, I was exhiled for stating Bobby was a lead rhythm guitarist....to my defense, I was also coming down from a 4-way hit of window pane (~);-} ¡!
Maybe this will help :) If the link doesn't work, search UA-cam for "Bob Weir ISOLATED GUITAR - Grateful Dead 8/19/89 Greek Theater, Berkeley, CA" ua-cam.com/video/ZLV-73VF6Tg/v-deo.html
Man I love Europe 72’ so much, It’s just sad seeing pig on stage knowing how little time he had left with the band and his life. Alligator and Love Light were always highlights for me in the primal dead sets of 67-69, pigs little quips and raps on stage just bring a new energy and life to the band. The band didn’t lose much technically or musically when he departed but a part of their soul was surely permanently fractured. As Jerry himself said at pigpens funeral “That’s not pig lying there. That’s the grateful dead!”
He’s Gone, and he’s the Love of my Life.. I’ve had a lot of Loves and many Lives.. I may never tell him his smile is made of the sun’s rays and his pheromones are my personal ambrosia.. NOone can replace him, as he was my personal gift from God. Such Gratitude. BB(NLH)CH2MB whenever you want. ❤
I like this swingin version of the song best. Has such a great groove. And not much drop off here from the extra percussion that would come back a bit later (despite the song's story).
"He's Gone" Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb You know better but I know him Like I told you, what I said Steal your face right off your head Now, he's gone, now he's gone, Lord, he's gone He's gone, like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Nine mile skid on a ten mile ride Hot as a pistol but cool inside Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile Now, he's gone, now he's gone, Lord, he's gone He's gone, like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Going where the wind don't blow so strange Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain Lost one round but the price wasn't anything A knife in the back and more of the same Same old, rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb You know better but I know him Like I told you, what I said Steal your face right off your head Like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Ooh, nothing's going to bring him back Ooh, nothing's going to bring him back
This is the song that got me into the Dead and it’s still probably my favorite. I highly recommend the 6/22/72 version as well if anybody hasn’t heard it :) Wayyy more mellow but just as good
Sad to see Mickey not in the mix, sadder that he left because his pops screwed the band over, but I guess if it weren't for that, we wouldn't have this gem!

They’ve helped me survive a whole lot in my 70 years (as a Deadhead. )
Crazy good album. Made me a Deadhead.
Sorry for your loss. Sucks to be 13 and go through trauma like that. Glad you found the Grateful Dead but still it was a terrible thing.
"You know better, but I know him..." God Bless you Hunter!!!
very cool pig pen's organ riffs and fills ... he's gone ...
The tone Jerry got out of Alligator was so amazing. His sound during this era and when he was playing the Travis Bean in the 77 period were the best.
Yes alligator is my favourite guitar in the history of musicians . The 72 GD era was so incredible
Interesting take. Europe 72 to Cornell 77 is what hits me the hardest of the whole catalog.
Agree with you entirely. However, I would also include in there Wolf in ‘74
I love the fender years!
Same here. That perfect Jerry sound for the 70's.
WHAT WHERE THE FENDER YEARS???
I LOVE THE 4 STRING BASS GUIATR YEARS
+Sterling Blake about 71-73
I thought the alligator was custom made by Doug, or was it the wolf that was his first piece
it's the first time they are playing it live... this is the 4/17/72 recording from Denmark. Look it up
Bobby, I try to steal your chords all the time but, you have the most fucked up unique style, I cant figure your shit out half of the time, LOL. AWESOME!
I hear you man, he's like my hero but his shits crazy

They don't do this song too often., but they always seem to do it just when I need to hear it. FURTHER!!!!!!!!!!
Steal your face right off your Head....Happy Father's Day

God bless you Jerry - All the best on your 78th.
Jerry's on a peak and he's bringing it here.
9 mile skid, on a 10 mile ride...Hot as a pistol, but cool inside!

Chills from the opening Vocal - This is the great one.
AWESOME!! Jerry was groovin, Keith on piano & PIGPEN playing the organ! My FAVORITE, now! (~);}

Nothing left to do but smile smile smile...... Miss you JG
I like this swingin version of the song best. Has such a great groove. And not much drop off here from the extra percussion that would come back a bit later (despite the song's story).
Agreed I enjoy the quicker tempo more
@@charles351 I've since become a big fan of the type they played at Rockpalast in '81.
17 years gone. Still miss ya Jerry. RIP.
Live and love this one
I’ll definitely be in Ventura for skull and roses because I live here
Like a steam locomotive, rollin' down the track He's gone, he's gone and nothin's gonna bring him back, he's gone ! Thought of my brother who I miss .
Love when Jerry can’t help but smile during the solo. He knows hes the shit lol 😆
"He's Gone"
Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb
You know better but I know him
Like I told you, what I said
Steal your face right off your head
Now, he's gone, now he's gone, Lord, he's gone
He's gone, like a steam locomotive
Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone
And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone
Nine mile skid on a ten mile ride
Hot as a pistol but cool inside
Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile
Now, he's gone, now he's gone, Lord, he's gone
He's gone, like a steam locomotive
Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone
And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone
Going where the wind don't blow so strange
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain
Lost one round but the price wasn't anything
A knife in the back and more of the same
Same old, rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb
You know better but I know him
Like I told you, what I said
Steal your face right off your head
Like a steam locomotive
Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone
And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone
Ooh, nothing's going to bring him back
Ooh, nothing's going to bring him back
Seen 'em in 1972 during the Europe '72 tour (and unfortunately not since).
Perfect temp 72. USA blues. Uncle Sam. Join or die.
Thanks for the post. It’s great to see ❤
These guys were peaking...despite pig pen in decline
Pig pen!!!!! You dirty pirate r.i.p. Pig and Jerry they are both missed but still loved
Great song for today. 20 January 2021. ♡
So chill. Pig Pen man!
This is the song that got me into the Dead and it’s still probably my favorite. I highly recommend the 6/22/72 version as well if anybody hasn’t heard it :) Wayyy more mellow but just as good
my mom was a deadhead and thats what got me into them. i heard this song randomly in a restaurant getting take out haha
Jerry was groovin and maybe a little high too.
I believe this is the first time they played this tune and it's my favorite along with 11-1--85 Richmond.
gummybear100 looks like Europe 72
Yes 11 1 85 was great! That was a great tour. Very different from 72 or 77, but all those different eras have something for everyone
Forever grateful.
Thomas Travis to all you dead heads .this is Denny the doctor lickabush .mastablaser.
Sad to see Mickey not in the mix, sadder that he left because his pops screwed the band over, but I guess if it weren't for that, we wouldn't have this gem!
MrBoamiel , band was better without Mickey
This the “bridgeless wonder”! No, going where the wind don’t blow so strange…
Beautiful. All I can say. Love you J
great album, great song, and great story behind the song
I hate how this song came about but glad they gave it to us.
+Tim Pierce Who cares what the inspiration is? It's a good fucking riddance song, and the best one ever as far as I can tell.
Easily my fave He’s Gone.
He's making his guitar sing the blues :) :)
I miss the Grateful Dead =(
RIP Jer Bear!!
Very Cool. Didn't notice that the last couple comments mentioned Pigpen. Great music!!
Glad I did. Rad show. Thanks!
I always think people underestimate Keith Godchaux. In this song, in particular.
Phil Lesh is an amazing bassist, one of the best
man, they had it
The meaning of the song changed after pigpen died and it took a more somber tone.
Dang thats sad
One of their classics.
Yea, another Gem from the Dead!
It cracks me up, Bob saying Now! to Jerry and Jerry's He's Gone at about 3:30 these guys are great
Hope you're still jammin somewhere Jerry...
He's jamming right now baby peace
No Doubt!! Wherever he is he’s “The Leader of the Band”!!!✌️✌️✌️👽👽👽
Oh he definitely is, that you can count on. 👍
Happy Birthday Jerry!
Cool video, yo.
PigPen!!!! Love the early years!

Uh...yeah. Kinda glassy eyed after the solo, God bless him...
When your young you have too much energy
She's gone, too. They're all gone. That's all folks.
Great version but I like how the song evolved by 73'.
Bill Murray on drums
Poor Pog playing the tambo
jerry from 5:15-5:23
for Greg
He's gone, down to Florida.
grateful dead is second best thing in life after frozen pizza
Does anyone know if Lenny Hart ever made amends for what he did?
Oh my my rat in a ditch lol like he told us wOW!!! Likez

Richard...if you watch "The Gratful Dead Movie....you'lll find a bit of insight into that !
THAT was THE BEST Bass phil ever had (IMO)
I guess this proves the song isn't about Pigpen.
Why is it so fast?
PIGPEN !!!
Hot as a pistol but cool inside.
🕊☝☝💓💓🎶🎶🎶🦄🌊🙏🙏
Where is this? I’d love a higher quality version

You've got to be kidding me……Truly Americans were once like this? Pre-Jeb Bush Aristocracy, I don't believe it.
Go on a political website to be political. Thank you.
