The first time I saw the Dead (Jan. 2, 1970), I was 10 feet in front of Pigpen (fifth row at the Fillmore East). He was the coolest dude I have ever seen. All goodness, all soul, all the time. He was the heart of the band then, and we all miss him even now. Can you imagine the arc this band would have had if he and Jerry were still alive and well? Ooo-ee!

Team Pigpen here -> before I knew much about the band I only had that 2nd Dick's Pick and a few studios, could never figure out the vocals on some of those really good tracks you know, like Easy Wind, Operator, etc it all makes sense now

Imagine how much pressure Jerry felt when Pigpen passed.... now he would have to carry most of the vocals, both frontman and lead guitar....these folks are right, Pigpen was a very important piece of the band in 69,70........ after all a great Chicago blues band would need a harmonica, right....

'the man you love, he hurts you all the time.
when things go wrong, wrong with you... it hurts me too.
he loved another woman; yes, but I love you
But you love him, and stick to him like glue.
when things go wrong, wrong with you... it hurts me too.
You love him more, when you should love him less.
Why pick up behind him yes and take his best?
when things go wrong, wrong with you... it hurts me too.

Whiskers B 100% disagree. They already have their balls to the wall psychedelic stuff, and their cowboy Bobby songs. They already had 2 drummers and a piano player and Jerry and hunter were coming up with new songs all when pig was still in the band. And when pig was in they still had their good ole classic blues. Pig was a incredible harp player and reminded the dead and their fans where their roots were. The band wasn’t the same without him.

Jerry said Pigpen didn't even want to be in a band but he was such a great blues singer they "forced him" into it. I'm picturing them in heaven with Jerry on lead, Brent on keyboards and singing the high harmonies maybe Keith moon on drums. Pigpen and Amy Winehouse out front playing songs like this and smoking a big joint with Jesus I'm sure he's a fan of the blues considering all the crap he's been through 😊

I'm going to be the lone contrarian here, but considering all of the great live recordings of the Dead, this is not one of them. Pigpen was dead before I heard of the Dead, I think it was 1972, in college, when I heard some guys talking of Pigpen's death. But, this song is so slow that it is teatius to me. Granted, many of the early versions of this song are slow but it was not until I heard Clapton's version that I realized that it's really a great song. So, my 2 cents.

I fuckin love the Dead, but I gotta say that Savoy Brown covered this Elmore James tune about 100 times better.

Nothing like the Dead when Pig was squealing, they actually sounded black cept for Pig but he had more than enough soul and feeling that it didnt matter.

It's kool to come across this. Ron McKernan had feeling. Would he have had an effect on the band's direction down the road?

They retired this song after Pigpen left the band. I can see why, what an act to follow.
