Fareed Zakaria is music to the ears of many Americans who NEED TO BELIEVE in America as THE great benign power and "THE responsible stake holder". In this lecture Zakaria painted exactly that - a sanitised rose-coloured self-portrait of peace loving America.
Zakaria spoke of the "geopolitical insurance" other nations seek from the US.
That's not the common understanding of purchasing insurance to protect oneself from unexpected damage.
US "geopolitical insurance" is other nations seeking to protect themselves from America. That is, Washington guaranteeing not to undermine, assassinate, overthrow, bomb, destroy or invade them provided they submit to Washington's directions and US dominance.
Otherwise, Zakaria's lecture is all Kumbaya, My Lord! Kumbaya!

America may have the utmost geographical advantage on the planet, nevertheless, China has the longest continuous civilisation in the world, which is the source of the Chinese incomparable confidence. Fernand Braudel the French historian pointed out: " Civilisations are extraordinary creatures. Their longevity passes all understanding. Fabulously ancient, they live on in each of us and they will still live on after we have passed away."

Zakaria is wrong on so many levels. China does have a economic model, a highly successful one, and one which is gaining adherents through the Belt and Road Initiative and the BRICS. The old GDP measure has become woefully distorted since the neoliberal financialisation of western economies. In reality, China is by far the largest economy in the world with 35% of global production, the main trading partner with over 120 countries, and using twice as much electricity as the US.

What’s most striking, among US intellectuals, is the lack of narrative for the common good for humanity. Given the privilege and achievements US has made in the past a couple decades, the absence of such mindset is literally a crime. On the other hand, there is no lack of such grand vision for humanity in China now.
U.S. can not win the competition if it is obsessed with pushing others down.

Journalist Fareed has seen the world from the ground. Chinese strive for prosperity and harmony in the world; while US and other G7 countries only believe in zero-sum competition. Taiwan represent a remnant of western-Japanese colonialism that must be corrected with re-unification, making China whole again. It is up to US to accommodate Chiona‘s rise peacefully. Life will be more and more difficult if US can’t give up its hegemon psychology as China surpasses it economically then militarily in the coming decades as demonstrated centuries before.

No that's nonsense. Market capitalisation doesn't happen out of thin air. The world believes in the US market and not the Chinese market because the US market is the most open and transparent one. The Chinese system and it's economy both are opaque and so businesses around the world are never going to trust China like they do with the USA. That trust in the transparent and open US market is also the reason why US dollar is the default currency of trade among all the countries of the world.

I used to find Fareed more objective especially over domestic policies many years ago. Sadly, Fareed has also fallen into the same trap of those China bashers who only know about Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Hong Kong. They know nothing about the history of China and its 3000 years and its various capitals. He has discredited his past speeches as he now utter falsehoods about world politics, even European, and Chinese. USA has caused the Rest to detest it because of its past record of cruel sanctions, weaponising of dollars and regime change. Now that the Global South sees the high contrast of China's non interference support of their economy through BRI, they quickly form a non military alliance of BRICS which does not threaten security like that of Aukus etc. Fareed had not counted the opioid problems , the high incarceration of a very divided America that lives on a anarchy time bomb. A country with such moral degradation as to support the worst genocide in history. All to enrich the military industrial complex but impoverish the ordinary people shorten their life span.

His view on the Taiwan issue clearly shows he doesn't understand the historical and cultural aspects of the issue and the resolve of the 1.4 billion Chinese. From an international perspective, he should know all countries except a handful, recognize China as the sole legitimate representative of all China including Taiwan. His bit about cold peace vs cold war, that is, that US can't suddenly terminate trading with China, is something the US has to accept whether they like it or not!

Excellent talk by Zakaria. For those who are boasting about China's exceptional growth from the late 80s till the first decade of the 2000s, they should dig deeper into the components of growth. It was mostly a massive real estate and infrastructure construction. This boom had its merit for a time since many buildings were dilapidated, and infrastructure was lacking. However, in the past decade, it has become apparent that building high-speed rail to nowhere or enough housing for 2 billion people when the population is shrinking is very UNHEALTHY GDP growth! They only contribute to GDP during the years when the projects are under construction and then become debt obligations and NO MORE GDP GROWTH once they are done. GDP formula doesn't differentiate money spent is dollars/RMBs already earned or borrowed! Too much of China's "growth" is based on borrowed money, and worse, when spending is for the sake of spending, it doesn't produce much economic benefit. Eg. if the borrowed money is spent on building a factory, it has the potential to repay the debt and increase productivity. But if it's spent on unoccupied apartment buildings, the investment becomes DEAD MONEY but you still owe the bank!
