- NEW WORLD RECORD - Mykolas Alekna breaks the men's discus world record in Oaklahoma with a throw of 74.35m (243' 11") beating the previous record holder Jürgen Schult who threw a then record of 74.08m (243' 5") in 1986.
Update: Steel Tape 74.35m is pending ratification
Update: Throw ratified and WR updated to 74.35m.
Ironically, Mykolas broke my freshman record at Cal in '68 a couple of years ago (176').....by almost 50' (227') !!! After watching tapes of his throws, I knew then that he has all the makings of a world record holder; it was just a matter of time. While he's not as big as many of the world's top throwers, his speed, explosiveness and technique through the circle are near flawless. As most top tier discus throwers don't reach their maximum performance until their late 20's or early 30's, I can only imagine how far this young athlete will throw over the next decade or so. Well done Mykolas!!!
Son and father Alekna are #1 and #3 of the eternal world ranking!
Looks like it happened at some random place for picnic and barbeque though xD
Sveikinimai, Mykolai! 🇱🇹
When the wind is blowing AT you, it's actually a good thing with discus throwing. If you hit the release angle just right, the incoming wind will cushion the disc, raise its flight path and keep it in the air longer. Looks like these conditions were ideal. Technically a great looking throw - I'm excited to see it and for him. But yes, interesting as some have mentioned, that wind is considered no factor in field events as opposed to sprints etc.
basically all WRs are with a little bit help from the nature, you cannot tell the wind to blow opposite way ;)
Your absolutely correct, however the wind will actually slow down the discus if its a straight ahead headwind, rather you want an angled headwind, as you can see around the 19 second mark of this video where the officials flag is more sideways, thats whats going to really provide that cushioning without slowing down the discus at such a severe rate.
THIS IS SO MOTHERLOVING IMPRESSIVE! Another fake*** record knocked down thanks to Mister Alekna and whole Latvia
He breaks the world record in his house !!!
This is insaen. That was the oldest record in track and field
Now we are waiting for Johannes Vetter to beat world record in javelin
@@adi9132 98.48 m is tough to beat
Women's 800m WR is since 1983
@@TheRenaissanceGuys we will see
@@adi9132 I didn't remember that Vetter has already thrown over 97m 😲. That makes beating the record seem more plausible.
It was windy. But look at referee's flag - wind was blowing from the side, not from behind.
Yes. Perfect conditions for right-handed throwers.
Unlike other athletics events, a headwind or from the side is, in fact, an advantage to a discus thrower
Keepin‘ it low, very visible here …
Рекорд установлен на эксперементальной площадке с использованиям действия аэродинамических факторов ветра.На стадионе в Париже будет 69м. Атлету тем не менее аплодисменты- Красавец!!!
Son and father: world and olympic world record holders.
I love how this is filmed :D Like some random people playing sports at some old field etc. not as a proper competition where you'd expect WR's
Not unusual with discus records as the wind matters a lot and you got much more of that in open fields like this than big arenas with walls all round.
all that's missing is a tractor driving in the background
Just some random field in my backyard... Congrats Mykolas!
I'm so glad the record was finally taken away from the East German.....Virjilijus must be so proud of his son. Way to go!❤
38 years to break the record of a doping cheater from the GDR! At last!
From 0:19 you can see how strong the wind is, seems that against the direction of the disc. Would have been easily 75 😃
That actually helps, because it raises the discus. If the wind it's the same direction of the discus it lowers it
The spring wind is really nice.
In a Meeting with unregular Wind conditions, where nearly everyone pulverized their own PBs up to 3 meters...
unbelievable
Finally his dad: Im proud of you son.🤣
Look at the Wind! Cant Imagine, that this is an official record! Risikolos!
The furthest throws have always used good wind. Gerd's 73.38 looks like it was thrown in a tornado
Bravo momak👍
Alekna! Lithuania!! 💛💚❤️
The wind says it all.
Vėjas šoninis 5-7 m/s,tik nevykėliai gali abejoti rekordu)
what a venue to achieve it in lmao
it looks windy!?
idk, sometimes wind appears on earth
Last world record was made in 1986, a lot of players played with windier days
That's the whole deal about that place, someone in the chat said there are 5 circles with throwing areas pointing in different directions, if they want to choose favorable wind conditions, they simply can do it. There were so many huge PBs last year there, this Saturday Yamie Perez threw 73.09, the best female throw in idk how many decades, and it was close to a 4 meter PB.
@@Al.j.Vasquez 36.534507, -95.918276, ther is just one circle and they can't throw in every direction
Looks like a mean headwind too
Biggus Discus
Sveikinimai!
This world record should be annulled. The wind says it all. Its ridiculous.
Wow 💪 super technika
Broke the WR with Jeezy playing in the background 🔥
Didžiuojamės! Sveikinimai!
What an ATHLETE !!!!!!!!!
wind??
Jėga💪
I get this is done for safety but it's a shame more people didn't get to see it happen if the ring had been in the stadium.
Looks like a bbq Party
A world record in a picnic. Shocking.
Looks like a lot of wind?
I wish him to break another record in the final of olympicss in Paris. With proper celebration.
"Proper celebration"? What does that mean? Most people in the stands wouldn't recognize what they saw anyway except for true officianados.
dude is 21, i have no doubt he will break both records in future again
Mykolas king😊😊😊
Wind??
It looked easy for him and he is only 21 years old. Look for a 75 meter plus throw from him at the Olympic Games this summer in Paris!
yes, this wind must have added at least 4 meters to the result, that's why olympic record (set by this man's own father) is 69,89 m. you see so many throws over 70m mark in random competitions but no one ever threw it over 70 meters in the olympics because here they can chose the position and the direction and also time of the day, that's why results are so different
@@robokopter300 Thanks, yes you are correct. His father Virgilijus Alekna won seven medals at the Olympics and World championships.
hopefully, he can improve in a more official competition. it's somewhat cool, but not satisfying for breaking such a long-term record.
Strong wind
With strong wind it would be 90 meters 😂
And now lets arrange 100 m down a Swiss alp 😀
Is it counted officially as there is no proper filming as well
HUH? Never read anything of "proper filming" in the World Athletics' code.
All you need to measure it is is a referee and measuring tape in an event, afterwards wait for governing body ratfication
@@dracula7779 Not just a referee, but 3, and 2 of them internacional judges

Denfly Skymaster Discus
Denfi?
@@m1oberon Denfly boughts the rights to Denfi. denfi went thru a poor quality control spell. and sold off a lot of assets. Denfly is now the official distributor to all former Denfi discus products
@@m1oberon no, Denfly have the same specs though.
Bit windy!
74.41??
74.35m, they had to verify the throw using a tape measurement made of steel. More straight, less room for flexing.
I hope he really did break the record however this looks so easy and casual as if it took place in someone’s back yard. This still has to be ratified to be the new WR. Is this the only footage they have ? Seems odd.
They streamed the whole thing live. He was one of over a dozen men who competed. Search "throws university" to see the playback of meet. They actually stopped competition to measure using a metal tape then they checked the ring and the field to verify that everything was legit.
Too much facing wind: won’t be omologate !
The joker. Throw a record in any stadium in strong winds. The same as the Tour de France to use mechanical doping
Prie rekordo istorijoj nebus to parašyta😊
you cant hear anythingö..
Жаль если в погоне за рекордом олимпийское золото потеряет..
That's great but is this official? As i know it, a world record needs 3 international judges at the spot to be validated, and electronic equipment.
I believe that place is known for that sport. So that "school" Had everything.
Lithuania 🇱🇹💪
looks like a scripted amateur event
Event though Alekna ist a fantastic athlete. This is not comparable to Juergen Schults WR. Because the conditions were tailored at the Alekna event to allow “sailing” - a very strong headwind. (Just like a very strong tailwind disqualifies a top 100 m sprint time). Schults record was during a general athletics championships where other competitions were held too. And most of all that was no significant headwind because it was in a stadium. Under Aleknas conditions Schults unique throw would have been a 75…
In the stadiums there are also strong winds.
I think Schults only had one throw over 70 m in his life... which means that conditions probably played a big part with his world record as well.
Schults did only 1 time over 70 and near baltic sea, with strong wind
That be official wtf. Man throwing it in middle of nowhere and 200m/s wind. Legit! Not!
Don't feed the trolls moment
Jurgens record in same windy conditions
