Music will always be there for you, and even if you cant find that music you can play that music no matter how simple your ability, whatever music you make will capture your feelings and be there with you in a divine way.

listening to Derek's tone is the main reason that I've gone back to playing Fender Jazz Basses period, not to mention Derek's just a phoenominal player and I enjoy listening to him play regardless of who he's with.

This is one beautiful album. This song in particular invokes a very imaginative landscape in me. All works of art from music to perfume has the capacity to transform a person to a different dimension. Its a very subtle and beautiful orchestration. Everyone should get this album..

Man this is like a gumbo, I can hear a little bit of everybody in there. I hear some Pat Metheny, a sprinkle of Jaco and a dash of Marcus Miller. Very nice...this is a good look for Derrick.

Very true. There is something very "September 15th"-ish about the way he built that preamble. Very dark and soulful. Beautiful.

Here is a good one from the Kennedy Center. In my opinion this sound is one of the freshest I have heard in the Jazz world for a while.

A strange occassion when I actually prefer the album version of a jazz track.... especially the first minutes sound convoluted and defocused compared to the album version. Derrick sounds rather muddy in his low end, and the pianist can't seem to decide when to play or not play his cues...
Gets much better once the improvisation really gets going though. Overall a good performance but I couldn't help feeling a little underwhelmed.

The album version is definitely beautiful and it had the advantage of production (overdubs, etc.) and that cello. If we sounded tentative it might’ve been due to the fact that we hadn’t been playing together too long before this gig. As for the comment on the pianist, l’m not sure if it was me or Mike you were referring to - he took the solo. I have to hear this again but l don’t think l missed any cues...the vibe of the tune - at least the way we were approaching it - called for things to not be nailed down too much; Derrick was looking for some air, some space...and to sometimes imply things rather than playing them. Either way, l appreciate your take on this as it wasn’t the usual gushing we read on comments...You definitely read the situation fairly accurately, and l hope l was able to shed some light on your take. It definitely wasn’t the best version we ever played of this tune.
