I saw Blade play when I was 18, and i was so blown away I decided to learn drums. I’m a professional touring drummer now, 13 years later. Thank you Brian.
He’s my favorite “expressive” drummer. Saw him with Wayne shorter and it all makes sense. I always thought he would be amazing on “a remark you made” by Weather report. It’s not considered a “drum song” but the drummer really does whatever in that song and it’s a good song for expressive drummers looking for a little freedom from strick groves
Barber 82 same. I tear up every time. Reminds me I’m alive every time. It’s basically a church service to me at this point. I’m a Fellowship believer, yes indeed.
Also, every member of this band is completely ‘in it’, every solo and conversation between horns has something to say to me, like the solos on kind of blue. Audio and video technics on point, and the tuning of the piano adds an extra charm! Come back to it once in a while, ‘to live in it’ (as Brian puts it so beautifully at the end of this video: ua-cam.com/video/lz4B5rMuRSA/v-deo.html) Love and peace!
There are those moments where everyone wants to be a guitarist, or a saxophonist, or a pianist, or a bassist (at least we tell ourselves that). The moments where you listen to someone who really showcases the beauty of their instrument--its versatility, its power, its very soul. Brian does that, in this performance, and really all the time. He really makes you want to be a drummer. He gives you the breadth, and the depth, of the drums.
As a drummer who just found Brian Blade, I'm deeply stunned. He's so innovative and has a truly unique style. A nice reminder that there are so many things you can do with this instrument!
No licks here, just pure emotion and reaction. This is to me what music is. Communication with the other players and not some rehashed licks that get repeated when one feels to need to show off.
He's definitely got licks. Love drummers that finesse the sound out of the kit. Guy has got incredible time and dynamics . I like how he thinks. Reminded me of Tony (Williams) in a couple sections :-)
i hardly dare to comment on the internet but i have been playing this video for over 4 years now and it still is one of the most enjoyable musical explorations to date. Blade brings me to tears (of JOY) every time i glimpse at the screen and my ears just cant stop falling in love with dynamic, creative & sublime playing feel this godsend of a drummer performs here. Add the groove, melodic interplay & musicianship of the entire band and this composition just killed 100% of all your stress, hypertention & migrains as if we never had any..... Pure bliss!
Blade is for me the model for playing the drums musically and as an INSTRUMENT. There are many greats in drumming, both past and present, that people can point to, but in my eyes this guy is right up there at the top.
+jordian me I couldn't agree more. I spent a decade studying jazz percussion, and I played with and saw some talented cats, avant garde players who blew my mind. I'm not exaggerating when I say that hearing Brian Blade play changed everything for me. It threw all the notions about playing I had out the window. I almost wish I could go back in time and unlearn all I learned - my education is so conventional, and his playing so original, that I feel like I have a mental roadblock that keeps me from understanding. He honestly deserves a MacArthur Fellowship.
That's a very interesting, insightful and wise point to make and one we should all take note of. Institutions have their place, but the danger is, it can kill creativity, style and individualism. I have met many drummers who wished they never went to a music college/uni and felt their player was better before they did. The problem today is, there isn't the work to go round and so you end up at college as opposed to just getting out there and playing. There really is no substitute for real world playing in tandem with your own practice. Don't get me wrong, there are always the exceptions, Erskine being one of them but hey, he's Erskine :-)!
So chuffed to hear this from someone else Jordian. I saw him years ago with Redman, McBride, and Meldhau and it was a revelation for me. I'm a singer/guitarist whose favorite drummers were Bonham, Copland and Beauford at the time. Then along comes Blade and he instantly became my new favorite drummer. He played drums, to my ear, melodically (apparently he tunes them particularlly?). It was no surprise that he was a songwriter too. I think the young Marsalis kid might be of the same mindset and need to check him out more. Anyways. I couldn't put my finger on it but he's my favorite contemporary jazz drummer to this day.

Brians soul pours out in to his drumming, it's a pleasure to watch/listen. His touch is incomparable. There's so many great modern drummers and they all have their own touch, it's awesome.
I had just read an article the other day talking about how jazz is the least consumed music now in America. People just don't know what's good for them. I have binged on almost any style of music one can, and I always come back to the free spirit of improvisation.
There's a lot of bad Jazz out there. and it's easy for someone to get that as their first exposure. With rock; you're just exposed all the time, good songs will eventually find you. For Jazz, you have to find them.
@@montanabaker1713 That's a really good point. Jazz and classical have a similar problem, the most popular "best of" jazz stuff you find in stores or on playlists is, to me, VERY conservative and boring. It wasn't until I found jazz like Mingus that I really developed a love for it.

I keep coming back to this again and again. This time I am so digging the interplay between Jon and Brian, especially Brian's bass drum and snare. The dynamics and excitement are exhilarating.
Brian Blade and The Fellowship band were fantastic and delightful. I enjoyed the whole concert. Although I wish I was there sitting on the front row watching and listening. I would love for my wife to take me to a jazz concert like this someday.
He really is like a small percussion section on a drumset. His playing is so dynamic it's always like he's playing AROUND a beat on the entire kit and implying it rather than simply playing a straight beat in a way. Very musical and unique.
I love these guys. I say it all the time, that they are the best jazz band out there right now. Such great, in the moment playing and really melodic compositions. Beautiful stuff.

very nice "in-room" concert, I'm glad to have the opportunity to enjoy this kind of video ... tnx UA-cam, Chicago Music Exchange, Brain Blade band, ....
Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. I enjoyed this so bloody much. All jazz hands and stank faced here.
I keep coming back to this again and again. This time I am so digging the interplay between Jon and Brian, especially Brian's bass drum and snare. The dynamics and excitement are exhilarating.
There’s some serious conversation going on here! Amazing as always.
The joy and creativity coming out of Brian is insane. His touch and sound are second to none
A great Composer and a one of a kind drummer
I love the girl dancing in the background. I dont understand how people can be so still!
That shift back into the melody at 13:51 is something so beautiful. Sat here a few drinks in I can't fully articulate how much it moves me
Brian Blade and The Fellowship band were fantastic and delightful. I enjoyed the whole concert. Although I wish I was there sitting on the front row watching and listening. I would love for my wife to take me to a jazz concert like this someday.
After watching(and listening:)to this video, I think it's safe to say Jazz is in good hands...Go Get'em boys!:)
His face when he plays. I've never seen someone enjoy it like that before, this is absolutely amazing !
Besides that the band is masterful I just want to add that the audio quality is great especially for UA-cam. Thank you for sharing.
He really is like a small percussion section on a drumset. His playing is so dynamic it's always like he's playing AROUND a beat on the entire kit and implying it rather than simply playing a straight beat in a way. Very musical and unique.
Around 13:02, in the middle of the sax duel, I got chills for almost a full minute. OMG. The real deal.
I love these guys. I say it all the time, that they are the best jazz band out there right now. Such great, in the moment playing and really melodic compositions. Beautiful stuff.
The piano’s re-entry at 14:31 never ceases to get an “Mmmmm” out of me
I defy anyone to watch that and not bop your head! Impossible!
A warm and vibrant conversation between instruments where everyone is in complete and utter agreement
This could not be better.
I could listen to Brian Blade, Billy Kilson and Nate Smith all day. Every day.
Its the first time I've sat for 20min of anything in my life.. When I look back at this moment I'll know it was 20min well spent
Beautiful, all music should be this good and all musicians should have that much fun doing it!!
I have listened to this like 100 times and can't stop listening, It's so damn good! 14:30 on is amazing. :)
I just learned 16,435 new drum fills in one tune, I owe you man!
Brian Blade, simply beautiful...my favorite living drummer since Elvin left us years ago.
This has to be one of the most musical and expressive drummers i've ever heard.
Love when nice harmony goes with a sensible drummer. Drums have the biggest dynamics of all. Amazinggg👨🏽🌾
