This is a wonderful list, perfect for this time of year! I’m 45, and still catching up on many of the classics I somehow missed. I can’t believe I still haven’t read Sherlock Holmes yet, since Young Sherlock Holmes was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Same thing with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I loved the Disney animated version, but it’s about time I read the source material. Love Daphne Du Maurier, Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel are two favorites.
@LisaTheBookworm Thanks for watching and commenting! I also love Young Sherlock:) Disney actually did a phenomenal job with the Sleepy Hollow cartoon. It's just like the original story. The movie from Tim Burton is very different though.
Totally agree that Hawthorne's short stories are great for fall!
@MorgansEndlessBookshelf Yes! He mentions autumn quite often and has a beautiful way of describing the scenery. He also throws in supernatural elements that bring a level of creepiness.😳
Love the Fall gnomes in the background! 🤩 These recommendations sound great for this season. I’m thinking of trying The Hound of Baskervilles this year.
@@robinkirk1821 You totally should! It's so perfect!
I'm not a fan of Turn of the Screw, either, but I have enjoyed some of his other stories. Now I do love The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and I pretty much read it every fall, too. Yep, best fall reading choice ever. Love your list!
I need to try some of Henry James's other stuff. I trust your judgment 😊
Oh my goodness, your Poe book! I've been to that museum but didn't see that book- it's gorgeous!
That's a bummer! I hope it makes its way into your collection!
You made me go and get my copy of "The Original Illustrated Sherlock Holmes" out of my shelf. I'm going to have to read at least one story now this autumn. Thanks all the autumnal recommendations!
@@tahlia__nerds_out That's exciting!🥰
I have that Henry James collection but I've only read Turn of the Screw. I should read more of them! And Sherlock Holmes, and Edgar Allan Poe, and Hawthorne and Irving... Great list!
@insearchofwonder Thanks! Did you like turn of the screw? I remember writing out a list of all the things I didn't like about it when I read it😆
I want to watch the movie and see if I like that better.
Thank you for the great rec's 🍂
@@Veronica.Roni.V Absolutely!
Great list!!! I'm reading lots of Poe next month. The Active Mind channel is hosting Poe-Tober next month. I fell in love with Poe when i was in high school and haven't read much since so I'm definitely reading some next month.
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD I haven't heard of Poe-tober, I'll definitely check that out! Fall of the House of Usher is my favorite, but I also love The Cask if Amatillado, Ligeia, Annabelle Lee, and of course The Raven!
I might be late to the party, but what is the story graph app? Is it something like Goodreads?
Love your recs!!!
@BitesOfFaith Thanks! Yes, it's an app that helps you track your reading but it has a lot more features than Goodreads.
My grandmother (best friend) was a HUGE fan of Rebecca, so my sister and me grew up watching the black and white film version before I read it for myself at around 17. She died 3 years ago after a long battle with dementia---horrific, but God was always so near and dear. The thing I requested most were her copies of Rebecca and Pride and Prejudice. I always think of her whenever I hear the title mentioned
Also, Susan Hill's Woman in Black is also good, written so much like a Victorian ghost story I would have never guessed it dates just back to the 80s. Read that one last year, but haven't seen any film adaptations.
@whitneydotson643 I love The Woman in Black, and you're right, I didn't realize it was written so recently. I also loved her novella, I think it's called the man in the portrait. I was just looking at Mrs De Winter recently. I definitely want to read it. My Cousin Rachel is also outstanding!
Oh my goodness, I hadn't heard of her novella---thank you :)! From what I recall, it seems Ms. Hill is a Christian (at least claiming, which explains her tastefulness). Come to think of it, I think I need to read more of her, lolol. Good to know about My Cousin Rachel. My sister and I are both planning to read Jamaica Inn soon. So fun having a few believing sisters/friends who "get" and "give" the same vibes, lolol. I would love to hear your thoughts if you do get around to Mrs. De Winter---but no pressure :)!
Finally, I don't approve of the adulterous relationship in Lynn Cullen's Mrs. Poe, and it seemed there was a scene or two to skip, but otherwise, it's such a shame, as I would highly recommend otherwise. It wasn't what I consider "smutty" as the scene was easy to see coming. However, as I said, the plot is based on an alleged affair. It's interesting, though, as it gives a glimpse of the writers' circles of the time and their interactions with contemporaries, etc. Fascinating.
Yet, I digress...your channel is awesome! :)
@@wanderingwithstacy Lastly I will add that something about this weather also creates the perfect mood for James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small series. The BBC series is great, as well.
@whitneydotson643 I read Mrs Poe years ago! I don't remember if I liked it or not. I haven't read James Hariot yet, but I want to! I loved Jamaca Inn. It's a harsher read than her others. But it's perfect for November or December!
I haven't read any Sherlock Holmes. Where would you suggest starting? Do they need to be read in order?
A study in scarlet is the beginning. It shows you how Sherlock and Watson meet and start working together. The 1st short story collection is the Adventures of Sherlock, but you can read some of the stand alones first if you want to. My favorite is the Hound of the Baskervilles, especially for this time of year!
Thank you for sharing your favorites! Rebecca is on my list this Fall, I've heard so much about it. So many books 📚.... Take care and God bless 🕯️
@@junewood3012 I hope you also love it!
