I had a Russell Malone CD from the 90's and I cherished it. Hadn't followed him heavy since and now I'm sad to hear he has passed. But he played like a good ass Burbon on this set. RIP
I read not long ago that a tribe in West Africa plays/played a 12 Bar Blues format as part of their traditional bag of tricks from time immemorial. Whatever its origin it must be the most brilliant concept as it allows anyone anywhere to get onboard with no need for a common language, ability to read music and in many cases just the very basics in terms of an instrument. Malone is one of the best in terms of technique and feeling...a winning combo.
Fantastic. I love when jazz musicians play the blues. This needs (and will get) many more views. I sent this to 10 friends and told them to "squint their ears" or they'll miss some amazing stuff.
amazing performance from Malone, from pure Delta blues resonant with open strings, to an insurmountable rhythmic frenzy, which exhausts itself. Then Cohen's excellent trio rebuilds the blues from scratch. This blues with a jazz focus is wonderful!
About 3:50 in, watch for Mr. Cohen response to what they're putting out. He's pretty surprised and happy boy... I sure wish this whole session was on a CD somewhere.
I think an electric bass is generally easier to play, cheaper to buy and more convenient to transport. But I love listening to Russell Hall play the double bass!
@@davidyucht6432 Yes, you are absolutely right. but sound of double bass easily cover up its shortcoming..size, price&etc.. i always try to pick double bass over electric on any jazz stages!
I did not know this side of Mr.Malone fucking Incredible. My first introduction to Russell was the Odd Couple theme it blew my socks off when I herd this the tension and the release was out of this world. For myself being musician and Russell being a year older I adopted him as my brother for guidance on this dame guitar but when I herd of passing what can I say but rest well brother incredible job well done!!
here after hearing of his passing, could not be more heartbroken.
God Bless the drummer for what he did here
Damn right. Not an easy tempo/feel to work with
Yes, a excellent job by the skin thrasher

I have no idea why not many people play Double bass instead of electric bass in blues session. This is absolutely fantastic!!

Russell Hall, if a nuclear blast could ever be a good thing, then that would be you on that upright! Bru, that was mind f*****'in blowing!
The 4 dislikes are from John Mayer fans
Hendrix fans - eat your hearts out, this is REAL guitar blues.
no need to belittle one artist to put another on a pedestal mate
