So deeply saddened by the loss of the great Russell Malone. I can’t imagine the sorrow that you and his family must be feeling, Maestro Carter. I had the great fortune of seeing Mr. Malone perform with Diana Krall many years ago. He was an astounding musician.
I m working for 3 year since I ve been listening to this who put me in the jazz, I begin to touch the total freedom of expression, even if I m still far from this. if you are reading this keep going bros, you can do it ! :)
Very nice when someone spends the time to dive deep into the instrument and their own subconscious mind.It takes discipline, meditation, being open and a focused surrender but so beautiful to hear the subconscious release. Practice and hard work pay a huge part and listening to others. You can still he has studied improvisation and learned about the colors of chords etc.
A similar feel to the music of Wes Montgomery, but his own singular style... lush, warm and just a treat to listen to. Nice job by the recording engineers in bringing us the 'full meal deal' of his sound.
I somehow luckily found this video in college, when I started my guitar aspirations. Russell's tone, touch, and voicings blew me away. This arrangement is truly divine and became dear to me. Now in my thirties, it still has the same effect on me. Very saddened to hear of the passing of this absolute legend. Rest in Peace, Mr. Malone.
As a layman who has no idea about playing jazz, I dont think i can ever understand what people mean when they say things like,"this guy or that guy is a jazz master"...I guess it's for people who can literally play the wrongest notes in the rightest way. That's all I can think of as a guy with zero jazz experience. To me, if you can 'understand' it...you are far better than me. The keys change every freaking bar, sometimes more than once in a single bar. How the hell do you play on that. Playing so many accidentals so tastefully. I can never do that. Even though I've heard about so many jazz legends, I have no reason to not believe that Russell Malone is one of the greatest jazz guitar players alive today. Hands down. He makes you feel every note, even if you are not into jazz. I don't know I just had to get it off my chest. This guy has opened the gates of jazz for people like me.
Vishi Kant Well, that's why you have to transcribe solos, that way you'll understand what the masters were doing so you can absorb it to your playing ;)
Its crazy that I’ve been thinking about this solo and I come on here to find out he’s passed. Well deserved rest of for a man who happened to hold an amazing gift
I was fortunate enough to meet Russel in Akron Ohio at a benefit concert and had my picture taken with him and bought his c.d. He's really a nice guy, wouldn't it be great to hang out with him for a day or two.
***** no i love jazz, its just a lot of guitarist quit trying to play jazz before they get anywhere with it. it is a very unique and hard genre of music to master.
I find those videos pointless. The only way to approach Jazz is by being shit hot on your theory, so spotting chords and knowing which modes and arpeggios relate to it and most importantly feeling it. Many don't have the feel. I usually find videos like this by checking out the greats first. Such as Pat Martino, Joe Pass and Wes. You have to be really particular in your search.
Just heard Russell a couple of days ago at Yale in the RON CARTER TRIO and have known him for a couple of decades. He is such at warm human and MONSTER GUITARIST! Such wonderful playing.Total command of the instrument!!! - Don Witter,Jr.
Wow...that was wonderfull...I don't really listen to jazz alot, but I can already understand how jazz musicians give everything on stage...It's been quite a time that I was with music, but after listening to this melody, it feels different...like I got high or something xD.
Same here. I started checking out jazz guitar this past weekend. And I must say, it is just the sort of change I needed. I got tired of playing metal and open chord acoustic stuff.
This is why he's my musical partner in so many groups. Thank you for keeping his music alive on you tube!
Love your work too Mr. Carter
Condolences on your loss, sir. What a beautiful man and musician

R.I.P. Russell, you will be missed dearly!
A sad day today. RIP Russell Malone.
Incredible how high humans can reach. This is really a soul performing a divine act.
Sounds like music that fell from heaven and poured out through the soul of this man.
Most gorgeous phrasing I've ever heard.
Stunning. I KNEW that is what the jazz guitar could sound like.
It’s 2024 and I’m still in aweeeee
This is what I imagine as freedom. Being able to play like this.
If you work hard enough, and study hard enough, you will be able to play like this. I completely agree with you btw
I m working for 3 year since I ve been listening to this who put me in the jazz, I begin to touch the total freedom of expression, even if I m still far from this. if you are reading this keep going bros, you can do it ! :)
one of my favourite solo jazz guitar performances of all time
I went to school with Russell at Monroe high school in Albany GA and he was GREAT back then!!!!

I could listen to this all day every day.
True talent and dedication.
SO few have that touch and ability to just get you lost within the emotion of their song. Too soon too soon...RIP
Russell MAlone....such a kick ass name!
No pressure,it’s Russell ,one of the most beautiful tones I’ve ever heard on a guitar as a youngster watching him in NY clubs.
This brought me to tears. Pure human emotion right there. What a talent.
calm and beautiful song
Stunning guitarist….So sad to see him pass so soon. I loved his collaborations with Diana Krall. RIP Russell Malone❤🎶
whoa, man, the guy is tapping out arpeggios!....awesome style and sound....I had never heard of this guy until last night...
I can't believe how good this man is

Roberto Zarrabal true true :) covering your favourite songs is a great way to improve, musically as well as technically. :)
Vishi Kant jascha Heifetz said "you're never more than one note away from the right note."
In jazz u are free to use numerous scales and ideas but u have to learn to apply them in a way that all notes marry all chords smoothly
he dont even play a single wrong note.
I closed my eyes and went off to heaven for a brief time. Thank you Russell Malone
stunningly beautiful

I had no idea jazz was like this. I see there's been some issue with metal on this page. I listen to that almost exclusively. This is beautiful music.
