My wife recently retired from 30 years of teaching and is now having the opportunity to take her passions (photography and digital scrapbooking) to a higher level. A few weeks ago she ran across one of your videos and immediately fell in love with your teaching style. She very much appreciates your easy-going manner and the comfortable pace you take, combined with your ability to clearly explain things in an unassuming way. She suggested I have a look myself and after watching a few of your videos, I understand why she is so happy to have discovered your channel. We have a couple of E-M10s, so we are very thankful to have found your tutorials for the menu system and features on this camera. Thanks for filling this much needed but neglected niche.
Thanks for taking the time to write. I really appreciate the kind feedback. I will continue this series, just been so busy lately. I envy your wife's retirement.
Thank you Rob for putting out these super practical and beginner friendly videos especially about setting up a new Olympus camera. I just bought a new EM10 Mark ii and like you said I didn't know how to start. I knew that it is a very powerful camera (that's why I chose it) and I also knew that Olympus is famous for their complex menu settings. I am so grateful that your video was the first one I watched right after I opened my camera box. Your instructions are clear and all the explanations make sense even for a absolute beginner like me. I like how you show your camera screen from the background and that's really helpful. I also like that you pointed out everything you did with every little settings and the reasons behind it. It is really easy for someone like me to follow and learn from it. Your video gives me the confidence that I can use this camera with its full potential instead of never knowing some of the hidden but useful features. THANK YOU!
I watched some of Rob's video BEFORE I purchased a used EM10 mark ii. I would never have bought it without knowing that Rob would be there with a video to explain how to use it. What you said about Rob's video instruction is exactly what I was going to say. I am a retired high school teacher and I agree that Rob is an excellent teacher!
I've had the camera for a while but did not have time to come to grips with it. This is a great introduction, particularly how to set the single auto focus point. I am looking forward to viewing more of your down-to-earth videos. Many thanks!
Thank you so much for explaining! I never took the time out to actually learn my Olympus and now thanks to you I already learned about optimizing my JPEG quality. I am going to watch the entire series now.
Rob - You are the reason why I will buy Olympus over Sony. I know that from watching your videos, I will get the knowledge that I will need to start taking some nice photos. Thanks so much for all you do!
super appreciated sir! This was the only thing for a beginner like me that wasn't a tremendously long video and so step by step with your explanations. GREAT JOB
Thank you for this series of tutorial for beginners on Olympus OM-D EM10 Mark II. I am from India and I own this camera for more than a year, but never could fully understand the settings. Your video tutorial is very impressive and easy to understand.
This is an amazing video. Super clear and easy to understand. I just opened the box and before shooting a single shot I changed all the settings. I want to watch every one of Rob’s videos. What a way to learn a new camera! Thanks so much, Rob.
I bought my Olympus Mark iii based on your videos. I have watched 5 of them, some several times. I look forward to watching more. I've been an avid, amateur photographer since the 70's and now I'm finally getting the instruction that will really help me out. Your settings for beginners is AWESOME. I never would have found all of that in the menus. I would have been very frustrated with this camera without your help! Thank you. Thank you.
I know this tutorial is 5 years old, but I just found it. I have had my camera for probably 5 years and ended up selling off lenses because I had no idea how to set it up to be able to use it better than my iPhone camera. The ISO tip is a huge help. I just ordered the Panasonic 30mm 1.7, and still have the manual 14-42mm zoom kit lense. You could sell a course on this camera, with shooting assignments! I can’t wait to watch your other videos on the OM D EM-10 mark ii!
Thank you Rob. As a elderly gentleman who is a bit slow to take in a lot of the technical stuff, you have made it so easy for me to understand my camera and its settings."Thanks"
I’ve had this camera for a year and had no idea it wasn’t defaulting to the max shutter speed! Hoping this makes a big difference in capturing my fast toddler... thank you! This was a big help.
Just got this camera (total beginner here), thank you so much for this! I’m so excited to start my journey with this second hand (but precious to me and gorgeous) camera
Just bought this camera today as a beginner. Thank you for the tutorial and please keep them coming. I'm following your instructions and off to take my first photos and to have a play before coming back and continuing on with the second tutorial.
I come back to your videos all the time. you step by step instruction has been such a big help. I am starting to get more confident with this camera. Believe me I was so frustrated I almost took it back!
This is what gets me about so many online tutorials of one sort or another. I click the OK button in order to follow the JPEG/RAW instructions and I get a totally different screen from the one displayed in the tutorial, one to change various settings with a slider - colour, brightness, blur background etc. So as a complete beginner I'm now stumped on the very first tutorial. Sorry, I'm not saying these aren't good tutorials, they are, careful to explain, but I think it's important to keep in mind all eventualities the person watching might come up against.
Thanks, Robert. I believe your are in the SCN mode. I forgot to mention in this video to put the camera into "A" mode. Let me know if that worked. Thanks. -Rob
@@RobTrek Hi Rob. Thank you for your kind reply, and sorry for being a misery. I was in Auto mode actually, but fortunately managed to find some initiative to check out another mode. It all worked thanks and I'm very much looking forward to working through all your videos and taking more pictures. It's a great and very generous service you've provided. One last thing though; adjusting the aperture in Aperture Mode, the smallest aperture I could get to was about 3.5 (I think), not the 1.7 illustrated in the video. I've gathered this might have been because I was using the kit lenses rather than a prime lens. Thanks again for your reply. Robert
Thanks Rob. I have been looking for a beginners guide to the Olympus and this is perfect. Too many tutorials assume an initial knowledge or experience that I just don’t have. Your tutorial was clear and pitched just at the right level for me to understand and to be inspired to learn more. I have subscribed!
Thank you so much. I just retired and bought an Olympus Pen F . My first good camera was an Olympus OM-1 back in the seventies. Then I upgraded to an OM-2 with lots of Zuiko lenses. Stopped shooting film quite a long time ago. This is my third digital camera but I never could understand the menu systems on the others. You have made understanding the computer on this rascal much easier. I have a long way to go but with your help I'll get there. Thanks again.
I used reflex canon for fifteen years. Then I decided to move to Olympus for other reasons and this was a hard and painful choice. The new menu was difficult to understand, then I found this channel on youtube. Thank you Mr. Trek!
After years since you first posted the advice, it is still so helpful for someone like me who did not have the time until now to learn about how to use the camera well. Thanks Rob! Your guidance has been like gold.
I just purchase this camera off a friend as my first camera as he went to the next level. He recommended your channel as a learning tool. He was right you are easy to listen to and understand I love your style of delivering content. 🙏
I watched these beginner videos years ago when I first got my camera. Long story short. I’ve been using my larger cameras for awhile and not my Olympus. However getting ready to take a big trip with wife where smaller micro four third, camera is preferable. Watching videos again to re-familiarize myself to the control system. Your videos are very helpful. Also, picking up some tips I must have missed the first time through. Thank you so much for making these videos. 😊
Love the channel Rob Thank you. Just subscribed.. Just bought This camera in new perfect condition. Looking to get back into street photography.. Starting from Part 1 and will work through the series. Love your tone and pace.. Perfect to listen to..
This camera was given to me as a gift ... I was intimidated to even pick it up ... finally I have found some help to inspire me to use it. Clear , consise teaching , Rob , thank-you so much for all of your effort in putting together these videos!
Have had the OM-D E-M10 for 3 years and was getting mediocre pics with it because "always on AUTO" Just finished watch this first part and WOW...I have learned so much. Thorough, simple and efficiently explained. Well done!!!!
I am an old-school Olympus fan_have a OM-1, 1N and a 2N. Have always wanted an OM-D just becuz. Got one of these E-M10ii cameras for a stupid good price and now want to learn it. Many thanks for this easy-to-follow video! Looking forward to viewing more.
Thank you!! I just bought a M10 MarkII, it will arrive in a few days. Your videos are so very very helpful to understand the camera. The way you explain and no background music, makes it a feast to learn the camera!
Rob- I just bought the E-M10 Mark III and these first 3 beginner Mark II videos you've made have been INSTRUMENTAL to getting off the ground with my very first (non-smartphone) camera. Can't thank you enough and really looking forward to all the other content and instructions you've put out!
i have seen many of these videos for this camera and today i am taking it out for the first time since over a year and thought i would get a refresh tutorial and came across yours, excellent i cannot remember one that was better. thank you. (UK)
I bought this camera 2 weeks ago and was really stressed about getting into its menu, especially because I am a beginner. I will get lessons next month to learn about basic of photography, like aperture, speed aso... But obviously it will be general info anf I am very glad discovering your channel. It allow me to start with my camera. I like how you make it simple with sharing your menu screen and your explanations are well organised. I am french and could not find any clear and short review to start, yours is perfect... And lucky me, I have enough english knowledges to understand your words. Thanks a lot. I will dig into next parts in coming days. Take care.
Thanks for all this wonderful information. I was gonna sell my sons camera and decided to keep it for myself due to watching this video. Gonna be watching them all.
Really helpful. Getting back into photography after a hiatus. The more I can get walked through these Olympus menus the better off I'll be. Thanks so much for posting these.
Great video series. I am a proud owner of e-m10 2 for about a year now and I started with this video series. I still watch from time to time just for fun. Thanks Rob.
Excellent job, very understandable. This “beginners series” is a great help, especially from a consumer level POV. Not everyone wants or needs a $1000 Pro lens.
I just watched Part 1 and I couldn't be more pleased. This is exactly what I was hoping for when I went looking for instruction. I can't wat to get out there and start using this new toy.
Hello! I have this camera for 8 months, and feel don't know how to use it properly. Your video is really useful for me as i'm beginner and i have doubts with concepts like ISO, aperture, etc. Thanks for your great job and greetings from Barcelona.
Another "thank you" for your beginner series. I managed to customize my settings beyond control and later couldn't figure out what I'd done. Back to the beginning! Also, the Kastar batteries and charger you recommend are still working fine.
Thank you. Although I used a DSLR for years, my new Olympus E-M10 Mark II baffled me. Your clearly stated step-by-step guide showed me the features I needed to get started. I look forward to your future videos.
Rob, I watched your videos before when I first got my camera but need a refresher course because we are soon going on a big road trip. Your videos are super helpful. You are a great teacher. Thank you for making them.
Hello Rob, I’m a total beginner and I just received my used em 10 mark Il. I’m very grateful for your detailed coaching. I’m fascinated. Thank you very much and I can’t wait for the next lesson. 🥂
I'm very familiar with an old fashioned camera's functions having printed my first print in 1954 but you make navigating this digital camera actually straightforward to learn and understand why such as with noise control, etc. Thank you very much. I've put off digital for severa l years and you've made it approachable for a fossil such as myself.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My husband bought me this camera over a year ago. I am a total novice. I feel as though I have more of an understanding about this camera. Keep these videos coming!
Great informative video, so thank you for this. I'm here in 2023. and just picked this little guy up at my local camera shop for an everyday rig. Looking forward to diving into the next parts.
A great walk-through. Soft-spoken and clearly in command of his subject - every video is worth more than a coffee. Looking forward to the next module 😁
I think what I’ve just watched is the most useful video that I’ve ever watched on UA-cam and I’ve watch a lot of videos. Thank you so much Rob. You teach just at the right pace and clearly know your stuff.
Thank you for this step-by-step video on the introduction of how to use this camera. I've searched everywhere for a video like this, but could only find "reviews" on this camera or videos that have showed how professionals have used this to produce amazing pictures, but with no guidance. Your video makes understanding on where to begin, how to navigate the settings, and definitions of photography vocabulary much clearer, so THANK YOU! I will be tuning in for more of your videos.
I actually just purchased an E-M10ii, even though I have an E-M1ii. I think my level is at E-M10ii, so I’m going through your videos to learn. Thank you!
Hi Rob. As a complete beginner, I found this video informative, easy to follow and very practical. I think this is about my 3rd YT comment ever, but you deserve nothing but praise and thanking for putting this together. Really appreciate your time for doing this! Subscribed, and can't wait to watch the rest of the OM-D EM10 Mark 2 series
I know this was a video from a while ago. But I thought it was awesome. I'm a total beginner but I love the pace. I will move on to the next videos to learn more. Thank you so much
I’m late to the party (like a couple years late) but just ran across your video. Count in me as a believer and your newest follower. Got my camera out and ready to move on to your next video.Thanks.
There are plenty of om-d-e-m10 mk ii reviews available; however, very few tutorials for beginners. Just bought this camera for my wife. I have been taking photos for years and have thousands of dollars of Canon equipment, but the knowledge acquired is limited when it comes to this Olympus camera. I only confuse her when it comes to using this camera because I don’t know how best to do what. You present the information in a well organized way. You have obviously put together a lesson plan. Good on ya. Looking forward to learning more about this camera thanks to your tutorials.
Hi Rob, I just brought an E-M10 Mark ll after using a Canon Powershot for years. Thank you so much for your tutorial, I learnt so much , look forward to more.
Thaaank you! Just got this camera as a gift and when I was playing around with it, I was frustrated using it hahahaha THAAAANK YOU for doing a full in depth series about this camera I would've been stuck for a very long time otherwise! Compared to some other tutorials I found your videos the most helpful! :D Can't wait to start testing this out!
This camera can take absolutely amazing photos. To get the most out of the pictures though you’d need to shoot in RAW mode instead of JPG mode if your serious about photography. You’ll then also need to edit your pics in an editor like the free one from Olympus. In the end it’s definitely worth it.
The clearest explanation I’ve found anywhere - thanks Rob. I’m going to be watching the other parts of this excellent series. I’ll also email Olympus to let them know just how clear and useful this is.
I just picked mine up today in a kit with a 14-42mm and a 40-150mm. Thank you so much… this is such a helpful video! Very easy to follow, too. Fantastic.
Thank you for the part about selecting the focus point! I had the PEN epm1 when I was in high school - never learned how to use it - but I remember being so frustrated by half pressing that shutter and the camera was ALWAYS searching for a focus point and wouldn't take the picture. Glad I'm not going to have that issue with this camera now!
Thanks for that. At last I think I understand my camera a bit better. I was starting to think that I’d bought a too complicated camera, but I have a little more confidence now. Many thanks from a grateful kiwi :)
I love your videos and they have been so helpful to me with my new camera. I have two comments that may be helpful. Please repeat at the start what mode setting you are in and show how to disable Quick Sleep right away as those of us following you have to keep waking the camera up as we scroll through all the settings. Thanks for your great work and all the time you dedicate to us Beginners.
A little late to the party, but thank you for the video, Rob. I've been so intimidated by this camera I've only been shooting on Auto. I'm so ready to expand my photography now. Thanks!
I have one of these great little cameras but have never really used it properly. I want to move beyond smartphone pics. This tutorial is really very helpful. It's so nice to find a series of videos that are clear and that address the exact thing I was looking for. New subscriber!
I've had this camera for a while and just used Auto settings, but didn't really know what I was doing (still kind of don't, but learning). THANK YOU for your videos, super helpful and easy to understand.
Thank you, Rob, for not having any background music! It is so much easier to concentrate without disturbing music.
Thanks. I don't know too many teachers that teach with background music on, so I tried to replicate that.
Rob, you are a gentleman and a scholar. Love the style of teaching, speed, and simplicity. You are the man.

Thanks. I have many e-m10 videos on my channel. Take a look around and let me know if you need to to cover anything specific. -Rob
Great video... I've learnt more in this 20 minutes than I have in hours of reading books about the camera!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent job, very understandable. This “beginners series” is a great help, especially from a consumer level POV. Not everyone wants or needs a $1000 Pro lens.
Thank you!
I just watched Part 1 and I couldn't be more pleased. This is exactly what I was hoping for when I went looking for instruction. I can't wat to get out there and start using this new toy.
I'm glad this video helped you. Be sure to check out my Beginner Series too.
Hello! I have this camera for 8 months, and feel don't know how to use it properly. Your video is really useful for me as i'm beginner and i have doubts with concepts like ISO, aperture, etc. Thanks for your great job and greetings from Barcelona.
Thank you. Glad to help. Don't hesitate to ask me anything. I do Q&A live streams so check those out if you can.
Another "thank you" for your beginner series. I managed to customize my settings beyond control and later couldn't figure out what I'd done. Back to the beginning! Also, the Kastar batteries and charger you recommend are still working fine.
Glad I could help!
Very helpful video. I have been taking pictures for years, but have always found setting up a digital camera to be a challenge.
I never make assumptions about what people may or may not know, so I cover everything I can think of. Glad this video helped. Thanks for watching!
As a beginner I found this video invaluable. Please keep up the the good work with the E-M10 Mk II.
Thank you!
Thank you. Although I used a DSLR for years, my new Olympus E-M10 Mark II baffled me. Your clearly stated step-by-step guide showed me the features I needed to get started. I look forward to your future videos.
Thank you! I'm working on new videos as we speak!
You're like the bob ross of cameras. Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial Rob
Thanks! I love Bob Ross.
Super like! Almost sold this camera. It was way over my head till this video.
Thanks for watching!
Rob, I watched your videos before when I first got my camera but need a refresher course because we are soon going on a big road trip. Your videos are super helpful. You are a great teacher. Thank you for making them.
Thank you, Frank. I try.
Just received my e-m10 II and as a new Olympus user these tutorials are very helpful! Merci beaucoup!
Thank you for watching! Glad to help.
Hey Rob, I recently purchased an E-M10 Mark III to start photography as a hobby. I found this video very insightful. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad to help.
Hello Rob, I’m a total beginner and I just received my used em 10 mark Il. I’m very grateful for your detailed coaching. I’m fascinated. Thank you very much and I can’t wait for the next lesson. 🥂
Thank you! Glad to help. Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions and try to catch me in my live streams!
I have be unable to understand this camera until I watched Rob’s great videos. Thank you
Happy to help!
I'm very familiar with an old fashioned camera's functions having printed my first print in 1954 but you make navigating this digital camera actually straightforward to learn and understand why such as with noise control, etc. Thank you very much. I've put off digital for severa
l years and you've made it approachable for a fossil such as myself.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My husband bought me this camera over a year ago. I am a total novice. I feel as though I have more of an understanding about this camera. Keep these videos coming!
Thanks. There are 7 parts so far. I plan to make more.
Great informative video, so thank you for this. I'm here in 2023. and just picked this little guy up at my local camera shop for an everyday rig. Looking forward to diving into the next parts.
Glad I could help!
Great info. I am a beginner who just bought this camera and this was very helpful. Thank you
Thanks for watching. Glad this video helped. -Rob
A great walk-through. Soft-spoken and clearly in command of his subject - every video is worth more than a coffee. Looking forward to the next module 😁
Glad it was helpful!
I think what I’ve just watched is the most useful video that I’ve ever watched on UA-cam and I’ve watch a lot of videos. Thank you so much Rob. You teach just at the right pace and clearly know your stuff.
Thanks, Simon!
Thanks, Anne. Let me know if you have any questions or you can ask me live during my live streams on Thu & Sun
I actually just purchased an E-M10ii, even though I have an E-M1ii. I think my level is at E-M10ii, so I’m going through your videos to learn. Thank you!
The E-M10ii is the most underrated camera in the world.
I appreciate you for taking the time to write. It means a lot to me. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series.
Rob, you're a great teacher, these tutorials are brilliant for a beginner like me, I actually learned useful stuff, thank you.
Thanks!
I know this was a video from a while ago. But I thought it was awesome. I'm a total beginner but I love the pace. I will move on to the next videos to learn more. Thank you so much
Thanks, Dory. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions and be sure to join my in my live streams Thu & Sundays!
I am an experienced photographer but new to Olympus digital having just bought an OM10 ii. This is so useful to me. Thanks so much!
I'm loving the Olympus line. Glad to hear I'm sharing stuff useful to more advanced photographers. Thanks for watching!
Just bought this camera, and as a beginner I appreciate your explanations for what all these settings mean and do. Keep them coming, please!
Thanks! I'm trying to make some time for part 4.
Just bought my E-M10 Mark II. I don't know how to thank you for this video. Before finding it I was really struggling with the menu!
Thanks for watching!
I just got my brand new camera yesterday and discovered your videos right now. I think this is going to be so helpful. Thank you so much sir! :)
Thanks for watching! Which camera did you get?
@@RobTrek Olympus OM-D Em10 MarkII. Pack 14-42mm + 40-150mm :D
I’m late to the party (like a couple years late) but just ran across your video. Count in me as a believer and your newest follower. Got my camera out and ready to move on to your next video.Thanks.
Thanks! Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions here, in my forum, or during one of my many live streams.
Thanks. I'll do my best to keep things in a logical order for this series.
This video was so helpful it gave me an appreciation for the simplicity and yet advance features of this camera.
Thank you for this very basic tutorial. It helped me to get it back to basic so i can start shooting. It is very explicit!
I was frustrated for 3 hours your video helped! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
great video. I've had this camera for years but I was hopeless, but after watching your videos I have improved. again great videos
Glad I could help!
thank you Rob, one year on your tutorial still benefits beginners like me who have just bought a new EM10, cheers
Thanks. Good to know it's still relevant and watchable.
Hi Rob, I just brought an E-M10 Mark ll after using a Canon Powershot for years. Thank you so much for your tutorial, I learnt so much , look forward to more.
Thanks! I think the Canon powershot was one of my first cameras! I'll have to think back and see. Way back around the year 2000.
Glad I could help!
This camera can take absolutely amazing photos. To get the most out of the pictures though you’d need to shoot in RAW mode instead of JPG mode if your serious about photography. You’ll then also need to edit your pics in an editor like the free one from Olympus. In the end it’s definitely worth it.
Love your videos. Very helpful. The E-M10 Mark II has so much capability that it is tough to figure out what you want to do.
Thank you! We'll get through it. Always learning new things myself.
The clearest explanation I’ve found anywhere - thanks Rob. I’m going to be watching the other parts of this excellent series. I’ll also email Olympus to let them know just how clear and useful this is.
Thank you!
Just upgraded from an old Evolt E410,...E-10 will be delivered later this week. This show is really useful - thx.
Thank you.
Your review on Olympus 45mm/1.8 lens made me buy.
Now your video making me a student. You are a great teacher :)
Thank you. Happy to help.
I just picked mine up today in a kit with a 14-42mm and a 40-150mm. Thank you so much… this is such a helpful video! Very easy to follow, too. Fantastic.
Thanks for watching!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for that. At last I think I understand my camera a bit better. I was starting to think that I’d bought a too complicated camera, but I have a little more confidence now. Many thanks from a grateful kiwi :)
Thanks. Glad to help.
Thanks for the feedback. I can see where you're coming from. Appreciate you taking the time to write!
Thank You Rob, while everyone is busy with Sony & Co ... you are a saint
Sony makes cameras? Hahaha. Thanks!
A little late to the party, but thank you for the video, Rob. I've been so intimidated by this camera I've only been shooting on Auto. I'm so ready to expand my photography now. Thanks!
Glad to help!
I have one of these great little cameras but have never really used it properly. I want to move beyond smartphone pics. This tutorial is really very helpful. It's so nice to find a series of videos that are clear and that address the exact thing I was looking for. New subscriber!
Thanks. Glad to help.
I've had this camera for a while and just used Auto settings, but didn't really know what I was doing (still kind of don't, but learning). THANK YOU for your videos, super helpful and easy to understand.
Thanks for watching!
