Make sure to watch the full video so you can see the difference in Gates kits.

4:55 This 100% not all gates kits are equal. If its price is too good to be true it usually is, I had to learn this lesson the hard way (bye bye built, closed deck, EJ20G)

Yeah many people are not aware of the different kits from Gates. Unfortunately many buy the cheapest one and learn the hard way.

Some kits with the lettering 'wp' includes a water pump. my 06 oem belt kit lasted till 2012, used a gates belt kit with off brand water pump which gave up on dec 2022. the rest of the kit felt half dead. I imagine if there was another pulley with a weak point, it would give up first and cause damage. best to replace the timing belt kit every 9 years, not 10 as they say.

Yes we avoid the gates WP kit because we have found the pump they provide is sub par. OEM pump and thermostat you are gold.

Off topic but do you happen to know of a company making stronger transfer gears for 5 speed transmissions? Ppg and zf designs both said they don’t and I’m not sure where else to look, just asking random subie heads now lol

Finding upgraded 5 speed parts is difficult and cost prohibitive. Jam a 6 speed in it and you will be good.

@@NvautoCa well it is rwd converted, brz trans is probably my next project, it’s a little more cost effective and still sturdy enough within my power range. I’d just like to prolong my 5 speeds a little bit until the car goes down for the swap.
