My class watched a video of a woman who went to a psychiatric professional and was able to cope with her fear of snakes after working with him for one 24-hour period. She went from looking at a picture of a snake to being able to hold one! Yes, exposure is able to help but it has to be in EXTREMELY small doses. Also, the client must be willing to treat their fear in order to have it treated, not just shown their fear out of the blue. It's a very touchy thing. Exposing someone to his/her fear too quickly and directly can cause the phobia to become more potent rather than less. (Edit: btw this is *not* in reference to fears that you *should* have such as guns firing around you, being put into situations where you are taken advantage of, etc. my apologies) (Edit… again: yes you - and hunting dogs - can get used to guns firing through exposure but I was just trying to give an example of danger holy moly…)
@@skylong6564 (Edit: I always had a problem with calling it “desensitization.” It seems like a bit of a misnomer to me because…) I would feel it would be more in line with learning to cope with fear rather than suppressing it.
I completely agree. I personally had a phobia of automatic flush toilets for most of my life (it's not completely gone, but it's close) and went to a therapist to fix it. Due to the nature of my fear, he couldn't really be there with me when i faced said fear, but he helped me set goals for facing it myself. We stared by just talking about some of my childhood experiences and why I might have had this fear. Then, we used pictures and flushing sounds to get me used to it, then being in the bathroom and learning calming techniques, to being in the stall, using the toilet with a sticky note on the sensor, etc. Each thing had a corresponding reward. I still don't really like using auto-flush toilets, but at least now I'm actually capable of doing it sometimes rather than having a panic attack in a public bathroom.
@Clément BRAVIER O…Kay. You’re half right, alright? I just always felt adding “desensitization” to the phrase has made it of a misnomer because desensitization has a stigma of being related to suppressing one’s emotions. My apologies for not making that clear. Perhaps I should’ve prefaced my statement with that. On the other hand, though, SD is a form of teaching oneself to indeed _cope_ with situations that trigger one’s anxiety. That is why it’s classified under cognitive behavioral therapy.
I always thought it was disgusting how the audience ALWAYS booed the man prior to the test results... which almost ALWAYS resulted in "you are not the father". Imagine being in that situation.
@@jackb.207 Sally was deathly afraid of any type of olives. The reason why was because (green) olives reminded her of dead people's eyes. When she was 7, she saw her dead grandfather, and his eyes looked just like olives.
The girl Sally who is afraid of olives is because when she was 7 year old she found her dead grandfather and his eyes looked like olives, so every time she sees them, she is reminded of that moment.
the story about the lady afraid of olives is actually really sad. when she was younger, she saw her grandfather’s dead body, and olives remind her of what his eyes looked like.
As someone whose who I call my father is technically their step-father, I don't know. Like, I obviously hear that everywhere, but my dad and mom will always be my parents, and their genetic relationship to me is of infinitesimal importance to me
@@maciejlehr4874 Yes, but the problem here is that the mothers lied. Even if they didn't know who the fathers were, they were having an affair with someone when they were in a relationship with the supposed fathers. It usually doesn't matter who the father is (genetically speaking ofc, cuz there are bad fathers and mothers, but if they cool, it doesn't matter if they're blood-related),. Huge props to men who are willing to become step-fathers and women who are willing to become step-mothers as well. But if a woman lies and bears someone else's child while telling their partner it's his, that woman deserves all the shame she gets.
The olive lady story is actually really sad. When she was young she saw someone who was dead and she said that the eyes were the color of green olives. She said she knows the difference but they trigger the trauma from her childhood of seeing a dead body. And Maury just makes fun of her when she was trying to explain
Phobias are usually irrational. Like it's a total fight or flight response. I'd rather be in a room with someone with a gun pointed at me than watch a video of a shark.
I mean they could be faking it but real trauma, irrational fear and anxiety about things (like lizards, spiders, etc) really suck and triggers intense life-or-death emotional and physical responses, it really sends your body into survival mode
I love how they still have a friendship after all these years, also because I grew up w you two on YT and its really wholesome and sweet seeing this friendship for so long
@Anonymous Have you not watched the video? They're just doing tasteless things for the sake of entertainment...and god damn it, I loved watching it when I was a kid on my days off lol.
6:37 no, this is not how proper exposure therapy works. it can work in some cases, but if it fails the client loses trust in therapy or have their condition worsen, meaning they are even less likely to get better.
I'd go with Springer any day of the week when we're voting for Trash King. Last time I came upon an episode a legless man was wandering around aimlessly on his hands and the stage had been set up with a bell for fights, it was just so bizarre.
I have no idea why but I love this shit. Maury and family court shows are my shit. Something about watching messy people having to deal with new information about the possible dissolution of their family in public just does it for me.
I always feel so bad for the littloe children who just wish to be raised with loving parents and here are a bunch of ''adults'' cheering over not having to take care of the poor children,it is pretty shamefull and tasteless.
It sucks for the child, but what also sucks is spending the next 20 years of your life paying for and raising a child that does not belong to you. It's sad that it's televised, but that's pretty huge burden to stick to someone just because the mom feels like it.
Do you mean that one clip in this video with the dude with a ponytail and the dude with a hat? Because I thought that too with those 2 XD it looked like they were both laughing when she ran away. Would be the best outcome from a shitty situation to gain a friend :P

Pewds, seconds later : _"Are we the baddies ?"_
To be fair, that's stupid ass fobia. Did olives killed her parents or something, did an olive tried to bite her?
@@jackb.207 i think i remember reading somewhere that she saw a dead rotten body and the eyes looked like olives. Not sure tho
@@jackb.207 Sally was deathly afraid of any type of olives. The reason why was because (green) olives reminded her of dead people's eyes. When she was 7, she saw her dead grandfather, and his eyes looked just like olives.
@@jackb.207 Phobias can exist without reasons I learned.
@@jackb.207 A phobia is a phobia man, many times it just doesnt make sense but is still a thing.

It’s not just traumatic for the parents though. I feel so sad for the kids that found out their parent isn’t there actual parent.🥺❤️
I agree
As someone whose who I call my father is technically their step-father, I don't know. Like, I obviously hear that everywhere, but my dad and mom will always be my parents, and their genetic relationship to me is of infinitesimal importance to me
@@maciejlehr4874 I can understand that
@@maciejlehr4874 Yes, but the problem here is that the mothers lied.
13:16 twist of the century
Phobias are usually irrational. Like it's a total fight or flight response. I'd rather be in a room with someone with a gun pointed at me than watch a video of a shark.
For me it's the same but with feathers
@@simona_merkinin I'm sleeping on a pillow full of them.
Spoken like someone who has never had a gun pointed at them.
This is inhumane.. I have a phobia and was being teased about it by showing pictures of it until I cried.. I know what those people felt..
I mean they could be faking it but real trauma, irrational fear and anxiety about things (like lizards, spiders, etc) really suck and triggers intense life-or-death emotional and physical responses, it really sends your body into survival mode
Iirc, she was afraid of olives because a close family member died (in the kitchen opening olives?) And she now connects olives to that traumatic time.
@@arianam6430 It’s because her grandfather’s decomposed eyes looked like olives to her.

I'd go with Springer any day of the week when we're voting for Trash King. Last time I came upon an episode a legless man was wandering around aimlessly on his hands and the stage had been set up with a bell for fights, it was just so bizarre.
Jerry Springer acts as a "judge" now on tiktok. Never thought i'd see it.

It sucks for the child, but what also sucks is spending the next 20 years of your life paying for and raising a child that does not belong to you. It's sad that it's televised, but that's pretty huge burden to stick to someone just because the mom feels like it.
