Hey! I've also made that change From Evernote a couple a days ago, funny thing is that I didn't know your channel up to today. I've been using Evernote for 6 years, I was paying it annually. The things that I will miss the most about Evernote are the encrypt content inside notes, the offline mode (which made the mobile app very fast, because the content was already there) and the 2 factor password, for an extra layer of security. Another big thing is that I paid Evernote only to be able to use it in my three devices, and the free version of Notion already has that! Amazing.
I started using Evernote in 2008. I'm very thankful to have recently discovered Notion and your overview videos. In the beginning, Evernote was fine for my mostly text-based notes, writing outlines, and the web clipper became a critical tool for saving articles for research and writing. But over time I started banging into the limits of Evernote as my usage expanded and I wanted to include more diverse types of assets. Evernote's folder structure just wasn't going to work for what I needed and I got tired of feeling like I was always working in a Word doc and it's limited functionality. Evernote was starting to feel like a 12-year-old application. I've had something like Notion kinda-sorta envisioned in my mind but for years there was really no good alternative. Seeing Notion in action it looks like it works the way I've been imagining the solution I've needed. Really looking forward to diving in and thanks for the jump start.
Good on you for making the leap. After watching your last video, I decided to do my own little switch from Evernote just to see what Notion had to offer, not that I thought there was anything wrong with Evernote. But I’d always seen productivity videos that mentioned Notion but never did a serious dive. But after having signed up for a year (with a discount) I gave it a go and have realized that Notion can replace 90%+ of the functionality of Evernote as a repository for information you’d want to keep and organize. But I also started to realize that there’s a whole other dimension that Evernote just doesn’t have and this kind of stumped me when I imported my entire Evernote content into Notion. There is a potential stumbling block for novices when we don’t realize the difference between a page and a database. It’s that database aspect, the real power of Notion, that can trip you up. But if you exercise enough patience and explore, you understand just how powerful Notion truly is and how it can become a supertool for organizing your life. Keep up the good work and I’ll be looking forward to future Notion videos.
I am trying to switch to Notion, but even though I look at myself as a layout and experimentation kind of guy, I'm finding that it's hard for me to settle on HOW to use it. Can you make a video on a way to START Notion? Maybe even make a three-part series: 1) How to begin and make it very simple; 2) The second week (or month)--How to dig deeper into Notion's features; 3) More advanced (and fun!) features!
TPRQ by Jacques Great idea! I’ve been thinking through some how-to topics (since this one is a very quick pass in the pros/cons), and I’ll consider this as a possible structure for it. Thanks!
I don't know if it's fair to plug another UA-camr, but there is a online course (fee-based) that is pretty darn good. It got me over the hump - and I had been struggling.
Jason,I just just started using Notion - I'm going ALL remote -and your YT videos have been so helpful. Like you, I have been an Evernote user for over 10 years or so. Thank you so much for helping me make my move that more easy and enjoyable. UPDATE: July 2020 Notion just keeps getting better, faster and sexier! I now use it daily with Trello and Things.
Just starting out on a similar Evernote to Notion journey and found this really helpful, thank you. Would be great to see more from you on how you've built your setup.
I started using notion last week with the GTD method and I'm loving it! The only thing I miss in notion is a proper offline mode, but they are working on it.
I'm still using Notion regularly and no longer use Evernote. I do use Trello though. Can't seem to give up the added functionality that Trello provides.
I am a student who has been Evernote premium user for 3 years and have approx. 3000 notes with 6 GB. I have not used Notion and all my book PDFs are stored in EN where OCR technology helps me searching what i am looking for instantly, This is why I love EN. Another thing is I find EN is affordable for me, dont know about Notion. Please share your thoughts on this.
Based on what you told me here, you probably should stay with Evernote at this time. With how dependent you are on OCR you would really miss that feature at this point. Hopefully in the future they can work that in to development.
Great comparison video! For me I'm sticking with Evernote because: it has offline support ... Surprisingly, it does a better job at Web clipping ... It has inking support .... Built-in document scanning ... I just like the simplicity of Evernote ... Of course not running down notion at all, it is impressive I think they really goofed up by not focusing on offline support from the get-go
can you show how are you using notion and trello together? is it something more lik notion is for notes and trello is more for the actual action points or is it something more complex than that?
I've kept my to-do's out of Notion, and use Trello for that, especially when those to-dos are part of a project. I approach projects with a Kanban mentality, so Trello is perfect for that and has many more features than the Kanban boards in Notion. I use notion to capture and organize information. If I could embed my Trello boards in Notion using a web link, I'd probably never leave Notion.
I was kind of following along with you in my freshly installed Notation and as I was doing it, I caught myself actually switching lol. I’ve had Evernote for a long, long time, but the inability to make these hierarchies was exactly what I didn’t like about Evernote. It also has kanban boards so there goes Trello lol
Will you be able to share how you’ve set up tag system in notion? I’ve been using Evernote for years as well and use notebook stacks and tag function. The tags imported into notion for me, but I can’t search tags across databases...haven’t found a useful video that shows to to set up, especially coming from Evernote! Thanks!
I currently use Evernote and Trello. Notion would be great for me. Offline mode, humm, when am I offline? OCR is a bigger issue and what about security. I tend to trust more Evernote with my data. Saw some iffy things on where it is stored and managed.
I just started to use Notion.. more like a place where to connect all the aspect of various project I am putting together. I know I need to study Notion a lot more to be able to take advantage of all of its functions.. let see how it goes. Thanks for the great video, just subscribed and will keep coming back to your channel to learn more
Made the switch myself a few months ago. Stopped using Evernote and Trello. No regrets - so useful - so flexible; do not miss Evernote all that much. Evernote may have a few more bells and whistles, but the layout and structure of Notion is just so much more appealing and that is important to me because it is where I spend a lot of time now. Honestly, I do not like the Kaban board (as much) as a replacement for Trello - but I do like having it all on one platform and so I go with it.
@@1ofus I am now actually trying TODIST and sort of liking the list/date/time view it has. I visually like Trello boards, but frankly it somehow was not "motivating" to get things done.
Awesome video. Appreciated the analysis of notion pros and cons. I have loved the app since I started using it two months ago and looking forward to what the notion team is cooking up to introduce in their upcoming updates. Been using it largely as a project management app. One of the downsides though is the offline functionality on desktop version of notion. I tend to lose texts which I type while offline when I go online. It is as if there is a conflict that occurs when notion tries to sync the notes made offline on desktop notion . Have you come across such a challenge?
Thank you! I actually have run into this offline challenge occasionally after I put this video together. So yes that’s something they need to address I think.
Any chance you're planning a 6-month update on your Notion experience? I appreciate the first two videos as the first one especially gave me ways to think about actually using Notion. I'm test-driving Notion as an alternative to Evernote. I agree with the downside of no OCR capability. I invested in a scanner and have made that feature a big part of my workflow for receipts and records, so that means I will keep all of my scanned and pdf reference documents that need to be searchable in Evernote. For articles and weblinks though, I'm preferring Notion.
I’ve been thinking about doing that because I’ve had people asking! I’m still using Notion if I’m going to do an update video I wanna make sure that it’s got useful content so keep an eye on my channel.
I'm also a user of Evernote and I'm amazed at how the editing functions keep getting worse every day rather than better. And we pay money for this ... at least I do. So, I'm fed up with Evernote and and I'm jumping. Thanks for the push! Great Notion beginner's videos.
I'm a longtime evernote user and fangirl. Pricewise, Notion is cheaper, and it looks like the ability to customize the layouts is a huge win. I'm not finding the ability to mail things to Notion which is my go-to for evernote. I dump things in a single place and sort them weekly. Still on the fence though.....
You're right that there's no way to email notes in at this time. If you're working from the inbox a lot that is a big deal. As for me, I pass a lot to Notion using the web clipper in Chrome and haven't been as reliant on the email functionality when I was using Evernote.
Thanks, Lori, for mentioning this because I use GTD system with Evernote and the ability to email notes to my inbox is crucial. So I'm not switching yet...except to maybe JUST manage my projects like UA-camr Thomas Frank does.
What about the file cabinet functionality of Evernote? I scan documents into Evernote all the time as a paperless file cabinet. Tons of documents. Is this something Notion can do as well as Evernote? I don’t recall seeing any discussion on that. I too am considering the switch.
Thanks for the great videos (saw your 1st also). I'm somewhat OCD, love symmetry & org'n, which helped me as an aircraft navigator (KC-135s). But I trained as a photojournalist in college, so appreciate the aesthetics of this program for sure! Going to give it a go! I love your content, & think you do a great job of communicating & personalizing. Great production quality also.
I'd love to know how you found Notion's kanban functionality and what specific trello functionality keeps you there. I'd love to have one tool for all my solo-entrepreneur work, and notion seems to be the closest I've found..., but am hesitant that it can really replace trello and todoist.
I'm also excited about Notion, the way they organize your notes makes it a better choice than Evernote. And also the flexibility to control your to-do list is awesome. But there are still many features in Evernote that makes me still wait a little bit more before moving everything from Evernote to Notion. First, the offline mode. Second, the option to add encription in more sensitive information. Third, I have to disagree with you, but pasting information in Evernote (although not perfect) is much betten than Notion. Many instances I tried to paste the info from an internet page or an email in Notion and all I get is a table with nothing. Fourth, the option to email info to your Evernote account is really usefull for me. I'll be more carefull between making a complete switch. Evernote is also working to completely update their app.
brian wallington Man I wish I would have thought of this when prepping for this video but that’s the obvious workaround that I didn’t think of till you asked this. I just tested it using the share feature in Voice Memos and you can send it to Notion and choose exactly where. 🤦🏽♂️ Great question!! 🏆
Everyday Apple hi thanks for the prompt reply :-) so that is one negative less,we are getting there...I am due a new pc/laptop soon so your vids are very helpful for my plans for a new setup...thanks and take care now..
This video is from a year ago. Has Notion addressed any of the "cons" you gave at the end of the video? Also, I've seen comments concerning the "offline" capability. I have used Evernote since 2008 so, of course, I have a LOT of stored material. Yet, there are some things about Notion that are attractive to me. If the "cons" you mentioned have been addressed, I might make the switch. I also noticed that the Notion web-clipper is not available for the Safari browser. That is another "con," albeit not a "deal-breaker" for me.
The lure of EN is it’s ease of use (ie a person doesn’t have to design personal user interface) coupled with the power of OCR search. The lure of Notion is it’s power of individual design and functionality. The primary barrier to Notion is most individuals don’t understand what their individual design looks like or means. If Notion unlocks this riddle (perhaps via templates & user sessions) then EN should be concerned...
Good input. I do know that Notion has OCR on board for development. And about the templates, I'm really impressed with how easy it can be to set up Notion as it stands now with the templates they offer.
I was just watching videos about Trello as I was planning to use it to get organized and launch my new project. Then somehow I got sidetracked with videos comparing Trello to Asana and somehow landed on your first 2 videos on Notion 😄 Since I haven't really get used to Trello, do you think I can just skip it and just use Notion for the kanban style project management boards? You are using both, but I'm assuming you've used Trello for some time anyway. I also used Evernote etc but not so diligently therefore moving to Notion is a no brainer.
Sorry I'm just now seeing this comment, but I continue to use Trello because I like the advanced automation that Butler provides within Trello. If a basic Kanban board is all you need, then Notion will do just great, I think.
Nice further personal views on using Notion. I agree with the OCR, voice recording Evernote offers. I agree that Notion is much more appealing. I also use Bear (fast, relaible, flexible, powerful, very usable on a mobile) and Notebooks.
Great video. Im evernote user + todoist. While i always thought that minimal, markdown text based notes work for me (well, im software engineer), im actually quite productive in todoist, there are also projects / experiments that need some kind of visual attractions to make you start doing these things. The home page you showed is Perfect example - i have like 100 projects in todoist and i really love that if i had 10 of them posted on Rich graphic interesting home page, just like in notion, i would achieve much more.
Thanks so much for this video and the intro video to Notion - very helpful. I'm also a 10-year Evernote user, but use the audio note feature a lot. If Notion can do this I may switch. For now I'm experimenting with it alongside Evernote.
Thanks for this video, i've been toying with Evernote for ages, but it never really did it for me, plus i didnt like the restrictive pricing. Ive used many others like OneNote (functional) Trello (limited, but works v well for what it is). Im going to take the plunge with Notion.
Could you please address security? We all have some sensitive information we need not only to preserve but also to keep private - be it personal or business. I am sure Notion uses SSL throughout since there are regulations enforcing that in Europe and elsewhere for many businesses. But how about Notion staff? Do they have access to user data? If they do, so do, potentially, hackers. (Snowden was able to do his stuff because he was an insider). Does Notion offer, for example, a page type that can be completely protected with zero knowledge encryption? Understandably, such page may not be searchable, etc, but I as a user should be allowed to make that decision.
Thanks for posting this. How are you getting on a year later? I was on the fence, and thanks to this video I've decided to migrate to play around and I must say I am loving it so far. Question - when you say you user kanban board in notion but are unlikely to leave trello, have you used embedded trello boards in notion and didn't like it or was it the native boards you were not a fan of? I dream of the day when I can just use the one tool to solve all my needs, so if I could condense Evernote and trello into notion, that would be incredible.
A year later I'm still using Notion, though it's time for me to make some changes to my structure and the layout of my home page. When I saw the phrase "embedded Trello boards in notion" in your comment, I got way too excited so I began scouring the internet for a way to do this, and as far as I can tell there's no easy way to make it happen. So the reason I love Trello so much and continue to use it for my Kanban boards is that it excels as a full-featured project management tool. Features like Butler make it really hard to consider moving all my boards to Notion. I've been able to leave Evernote completely, but Trello remains indispensable.
i have been using notion like for 2 months and i really love how it work. by the way i would like to see how you set up your task list. and ps have you ever seen notion on twitter? i wish you suggested the con you have mentioned to them, they typically listen to their customer
kompoj suthasa Most of my quick to-do items just go into the Memento app on my phone, but I use Trello for tasks that are part of a larger project or effort. And yes, I definitely follow Notion on Twitter and I should ask about the OCR capabilities and whether or not why are working on that.
i tested migrate my evernote to notion, however, couple attempts notice my note with pdf or picture in evernote, blank export to Notion. anyone encouter this or find any workaround? thx
offline sync is bad. I mean notion doesn't store the file within its eco system but hosts them to AWS and just embeds a link. So it wont work offline. That's a bummer for something which is similarly prices as Evernote. Plus there is no 2step auth, so security wise its a bit on weaker side compared to Evernote.
My work flow is Bear for quick notes, todist for the daily reminders spark for email PDF expert then dump everything into notion for over views and organizing
"drill down", to me, is equivalent to speed bumps. Note you can fiddle with display and move things around all day but getting straight to content is WAY more time consuming than with Evernote. I can't stand all the nesting. Same reason I didn't stick with Trello.
Sorry I didn't see your comment sooner! If you set up a new page, just choose "Templates" and you'll see all of Notion's templates available there on the right.
I'm concerned about their privacy/security policy. Have you read this statement in their privacy policy? Thoughts? "As a condition of your use of the Service, you grant Notion a nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide, transferable, sub-licenseable license to access, use, host, cache, store, reproduce, transmit, display, publish, distribute, modify and adapt and create derivative works (either alone or as part of a collective work) from your Content."
I’m sorry I missed your comment when you posted it, but I read this and it does seem a bit strange so I’m going to contact them about it and see what the response is.
Yes, Trello is a great tool. I posted a video on how I organize my brainstorming in Trello. It's here, in case you haven't seen it: ua-cam.com/video/qWe-93KtMrY/v-deo.html
Great video! I was really pleased when they launched User Templates as it's supporting me as I try to combine a Kanban approach with a Bullet Journal method to keep track of things in a time-bound way. I produce a magazine and have a ton of sub-projects, so using Kanban is helpful (Notion allowing me to turn each Task into a project page, as it were) and then by combining it with the BuJo approach (although I'm sure Calendar would do the same thing) I can make sure I'm focused on the immediate deadlines while being able to take stock of what's outstanding. I concur about Evernote and I've imported most of my notes now - just have to remove all the fluff from the deep recesses of my old Notebooks. Also, get Unsplash involved for cover photos was a big win in terms of aesthetic pleasure. I think Notion might be THE ONE. :)
Thanks for describing that use case! I'm fascinated with how people are using it in different ways (Btw, I checked out your channel and my mind is blown along with all preconceived *notions* around stitching. Nice job!).
The extent to which Notion can be customized IS a double-edged sword. We can zero in on what we don't like or necessarily prefer in something that is less customizable, but we deal with it because we can't change it, which also permits us to focus on the options that do work for us. As Notion users habits change, so does our Notion UI in many cases; this consumes a lot of time. Overall, this is a beneficial experiment for us all for consumers and app makers. Users have a variety of priorities in a productivity management app. I am a UI snob and personally prefer the customization options.
I’ve just spent the day setting Notion up - I find it absolutely fantastic! Worth noting if you have a .ac or .edu address you can get premium for free!
Another reason to leave Evernote - the 10 release on their new cross-platform code-base is a comprehensive disaster - the app is currently unusable and they are hemorrhaging customers.

BJJ Training Tracker, nice! Do you keep a running log of what you're learning? My two daughters train at Atos HQ in San Diego.
What about the file cabinet functionality of Evernote? I scan documents into Evernote all the time as a paperless file cabinet. Tons of documents. Is this something Notion can do as well as Evernote? I don’t recall seeing any discussion on that. I too am considering the switch.
Yes, I scan documents into Notion regularly, using my phone. "How" depends on the method/app you are using.
Thank you!!
I'd love to know how you found Notion's kanban functionality and what specific trello functionality keeps you there. I'd love to have one tool for all my solo-entrepreneur work, and notion seems to be the closest I've found..., but am hesitant that it can really replace trello and todoist.
What keeps me on trello is the logging functionality. You can export your history, whereas with Notion, you can only see it.
Honestly, I love the Butler functionality in Trello and that's the main thing. Trello's board management is just so much more robust/mature.
Voice recording...can I import from other apps to notion ?? Thanks and take care now,,
brian wallington Man I wish I would have thought of this when prepping for this video but that’s the obvious workaround that I didn’t think of till you asked this.
Then somehow I got sidetracked with videos comparing Trello to Asana and somehow landed on your first 2 videos on Notion 😄
Since I haven't really get used to Trello, do you think I can just skip it and just use Notion for the kanban style project management boards?
Thanks for sharing! I've also tried Bear, but continue to enjoy Notion at this point.
If you can take the time to get Notion set up to your liking, it's worth it IMO.
Thanks so much for this video and the intro video to Notion - very helpful. I'm also a 10-year Evernote user, but use the audio note feature a lot. If Notion can do this I may switch. For now I'm experimenting with it alongside Evernote.
There is a way to share an audio note from iOS to a Notion page, using the share button in iOS, but it's still not the same as the Evernote feature.
This is an important question and honestly I don’t know a comprehensive answer to it. I’m going to dig in and see what I can figure out.
This is an important question and honestly I don’t know a comprehensive answer to it. I’m going to dig in and see what I can figure out.
Thank you for making this awesome video. I've been on the fence, but thinking of going to Notion as well. Cheers!
Great! Glad it helped. Here’s a video where I show how I set up my home page if you’re interested: ua-cam.com/video/2Wvif-d9QM4/v-deo.html
Why are you still using Trello? Asking because I also use Trello.
I like the added functionality that Butler brings to Trello. Lots of automation. So for now I'm still using Trello.
i have been using notion like for 2 months and i really love how it work. by the way i would like to see how you set up your task list. and ps have you ever seen notion on twitter? i wish you suggested the con you have mentioned to them, they typically listen to their customer
kompoj suthasa Most of my quick to-do items just go into the Memento app on my phone, but I use Trello for tasks that are part of a larger project or effort. And yes, I definitely follow Notion on Twitter and I should ask about the OCR capabilities and whether or not why are working on that.
i tested migrate my evernote to notion, however, couple attempts notice my note with pdf or picture in evernote, blank export to Notion. anyone encouter this or find any workaround? thx
Neat layout! I'm still trying to figure out how I want my dashboard to look.
So many options! :)
offline sync is bad.
Jay Rushlow Wow nice flow you’ve got going there.
Thanks for the wonderful review!
You're welcome! Glad it was useful.
How do you setup your homepage like that, I really like the things on both side of a page
I actually just published a video about how I set up my home page... Here: ua-cam.com/video/2Wvif-d9QM4/v-deo.html
@@EverydayApple1984 Thank you
Thanks, this was really helpful!
Glad to hear!
Have you done videos on the Bourbon and Beer listings? I use Untappd but would LOVE to catalog bourbons too!
I've got something like that on my list of videos to do! Notion is great for creating catalogs for all sorts of things.
"drill down", to me, is equivalent to speed bumps. Note you can fiddle with display and move things around all day but getting straight to content is WAY more time consuming than with Evernote. I can't stand all the nesting. Same reason I didn't stick with Trello.
I am going to check out after I view all your vids on it. Thank you.
Nice! I feel like I’m just scratching the surface on what I can do with Notion. Good stuff
I accidentally deleted the task template from Notion. Can you tell me how to restore it back from notion? Thx.
@@EverydayApple1984 If you don't mind, let me know what their response is. Thanks
can you forward emails to the notion?
Not at this time. Hopefully in a future release.
awesome video, you made become a Notion user!
I dont know seem overwhelming to organize. I'm using Trello and I love the simplicity and how user friendly it is. Thanks so much for sharing.
Nice job!).
@@EverydayApple1984 Thanks! I should do more with my channel, but I'm glad you liked it!
can you share your workplace as a template?
are u using the paid personal or free?
Paid personal version
is there basic encryption in notion?
I'm no security expert, but their page on this seems to be saying "Yes" to that question: www.notion.so/Security-6c56b4854b624b0d8f36711018647f68
Hey, what you are recording the screen
I assume you are asking what software I'm using to record the screen. It's Screenflow 8. Great app!
Seems great for the bullet journal crowd
As a bullet journal user who just switched to Notion, YES!!
@@contrapasso whats the best way to learn? and is the free version unlimited?
Yea, its good Notion, Evernote has annoyed me for far too long for various reasons. Great video.
Thank you!
I wish Notion team offers more payment options :(
Great video? Thanks!
Great insight!
It seems I need to take a closer look at the template.
Andrew Paint They’re incredibly helpful, yes.
Thank you! I'll give it a try, it looks very complete. Although the app is indeed a bit slow, the web version seems to be worth it.
I’ve just spent the day setting Notion up - I find it absolutely fantastic! Worth noting if you have a .ac or .edu address you can get premium for free!
Great to know!!
So Rob Bell, David Whyte, John Donohue, Marcus Borg.....my kind of guy. Would really appreciate an exchange of some sort.
Sorry I'm just seeing this! Yes, Whyte and Donohue especially in more recent times.
I love notion! But still the calendar is kinda bad, its not minimalistic and doesnt have an option to notify the user
Actually it has a reminder
Jan Almy REALLY? Where can i found how?
When choosing the date for an item, you'll see "Remind" underneath the calendar pick view.
Microsoft buy it
or make something better (Office Fluid Framework(
i dont invest my time on notion
look at big picture for ur carrier
Con: poor control of typeface and font size
True that there are limited options there.
Evernote organizes notes. Notion organizes life. Lol.
Great way to say it! I agree
Another reason to leave Evernote - the 10 release on their new cross-platform code-base is a comprehensive disaster - the app is currently unusable and they are hemorrhaging customers.

Good good decision. Evernote is old and not updated.
I'm still enjoying it and I am excited for the plans they've got for further development.
great!
Hah! E-Scatology..... yes!
😁
Everyday Apple, that alone won you a new subscriber.
Notion is the future! Evernote is the past!! Evernote is obsolete!
I'm not so sure Evernote is obsolete, but personally I've not looked back since switching to Notion!
Notion is very robust, but looks busy, complicated. Overbuilt.
There are certainly a lot of options, which can be overwhelming if you don't know how you want things set up.
One note microsoft is the best isnt'it?
Are you being funny? If so, then I LOL with you. 😂 If you are being serious, then my simple answer is, "No, far from it." 😐
No OCR is a deal breaker for me.
Yeah, I’m hoping that is a forthcoming feature.
You are out of the closet!
