    All very interesting but you can see how some of these scenes would have muddied the waters. The edit the settled on was perfect.

    They should have definitely kept the scene with Crawford persuading Danielson it was great

      You're right, especially because the scene makes clear that their patients are not violent. But Crawford didn't persuade him. He blackmailed the doctor.

    Some of those scenes should have been left in the film. It's a shame so many of them were left on the cutting room floor.

    Damn Jack Crawford is so badass in these scenes
    The way he chases any leads stands up for clarice and encourages her to keep pursuing the case even after being taken off

    I just saw a video on Dead Meat where Hopkins says he added that noise after the famous scence of eating the census taker as a joke and thinking it would be cut

  • @ricardobufo

    Glad I saw these but have to agree with Demme's cuts. Those of Lecter just make him a movie villain instead of the truly scary figure in the final cut.

    • @IlaughedIcried
      @IlaughedIcried 3 місяці тому +3

      Totally agree!! Some of these scenes make him look overly dramatic, quirky and manipulative, and the beauty of the version of his character that we see in the film is how smart, charismatic and authentic his is -- how ANYone would be drawn to him, even against their will.

    • @nxtwomenfan497
      @nxtwomenfan497 3 місяці тому +3

      100% agreed. Some of the deleted material (the ambulance scene in particular) detracts from the cunning psychological villainy of Lecter's character. It's good for the final film that director Jonathan Demme realized less truly was MORE.

    4:25 I believe that’s John Douglas. I think Jack Crawford was based off of him and he wrote the book that later became the Netflix series Mindhunter. He retired from the FBI in 1995 after 25 years of service.

    14:11 As Crawford is saying "May God have mercy on your soul," he turns to look out the window at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh - the building with the vertical stripes. Interesting.

    just realized how many political powerplays were going on inside the FBI and Justice Department surrounding the Buffalo Bill/Hannibal Lecter investigation - you didn't get this from the original cinematric version! But although they cut out so many great scenes, the final movie still is a masterpiece. Although shot between late 1989 and mid 1990, the whole film feels like a late 70s/early 80s picture - they didn't even use any new cars, infrastructure or buildings...

    16:23 reminds me of The Joker in TDK escaping in the police car. Also interesting that he’s humming “Beautiful Dreamer”, which plays during the “Omelette” analogy by The Joker in Batman ‘89 (Which also stars Tracey Walter, who plays Lamar in this film and Bob The Goon in Batman ‘89)
