Grew up a Red Man but recently bought a '56 JD 50 with all the bells and whistles (keep your enemies closer). Previous owner was awesome and gave me all the books including operators manual. I've read it front to back but your video is hugely helpful for giving me an actual visual reference to all the writing. Well done and thank you! John Deeres maybe arent that bad after all
Ohh, God bless you for stating the operator's manual right off the bat. The great Mr. Thinker of Green Magazine fame has said for years "After you buy a tractor, buy a set of manuals for it next. Operator's, Parts, Service."
Thank you sir, been watching your channel for a while. Mr. Thinker is completely correct but needs to add something for the spouse to keep you out of the dog house to that list.
@@deeredrummer47 well thankya! Hopefully my videos haven't bored you to death, lol. I think I remember hearing Mr. Thinker say something about jewelry, or dinner out, or gifts, but I wasn't paying a lot of attention 🤣
Just wanted to say thank you! I just recently lost my dad unexpectedly last fall. Back in the summer he told me “I need to tell you everything I know about these tractors and you can write it down”. Well we didn’t get to do that. But thankful for someone like you I feel like I can do the maintenance on our 50. Now I need one for our 630. Although most of it is the same or very similar. I’m one that won’t wrench on anything unless I’m fully confident that I know what I’m doing. So thank you sir! I really appreciate it!
Man....you need like $1000 just for making this video. I'm bringing home my Dad's 49' model A this week. He stopped farming when I was 10. Now I want to fix this thing up. Hasn't ran in 30 years years, but it has zero rust.
Good job on your video. So growing up as a little kid I was at my grandparents/ uncles house quite a bit. Grandpa had 3 tractors 2 1948 farmall cubs and a 40's sc case with a farmhand f10 loader. Long story short grandparents passed away uncles got all the tools and tractors and stuff my mom and aunts got grandma's stuff family divided over hard feelings. Would of loved to get one of grandpa's tractors to restore but nobody's talking. So I got myself a 1952 john deere A from a neighbor down the road for $600 to restore that runs and drives was a good deal so I bought it.
Nice video, thanks for the info. Obviously there is a lot of opinions on oil. Just wanted to mention for the live pto housing, there is a readily available at JD dealer, Hy-gard "low viscosity" some recommend since the 10w non detergent is hard to find.
I also have a early built in 1952, shipped in 1953 model 50, they have the large hole cast rear wheels, center fill gas tank compared to offset filling on the late ones, and lower radiator tank has a large thermostat controlling the shutters, later ones have small upper radiator pipe with a conventional thermostat, the wico ignition is indeed a distributor, if it is original it has no impulse just weights for advance and a resistor for cutting the 12V down for point life, looks like a model X but it is not.
Jay Jacobson, mine originally had the large hole cast centers but like many others they cracked and were updated. I do have some of the shutter control linkage under the nose cone. That’s been mostly torched off. I’m pretty positive it is a magneto due to zero external wiring and I was told when I bought it that they tossed a ignition system at it to make it run before the guy I bought it from got it at a auction. The old girl has been farmerized pretty bad, but it’s not a show piece and never will be.
Don F I have heard of people using John Deere HY-GARD in the powershaft clutch housing, and the power trol. I personally haven’t tried it on my Tractor so I don’t have much of a opinion on it. I don’t think it would cause any issues as long as your not mixing it.
@@deeredrummer47 thanks man appreciate! Subscribing to your channel right now, not many people you can ask for advice on those old tractors in South Africa! 🙏
17:45 ''This would be a male square not a female. Make sure you put it in the right place.'' haha Sorry I couldn't help it I burst out laughing over that. Great video with good tips though!
I wanted to but my tractor is up to date on everything currently and I didn’t want this video to be 2 hours long. Eventually when I do change fluids there will be individual videos just for you buddy

Awesome thanks
Can you the battery I have my dad's 60 and 620 and no battery in them need help
Powershaft clutch housing - in another video, a mechanic recommends trans-hydraulic fluid instead of 10W oil. Any comments on that?

What oil is it you put into the transmission? The normal John Deere 15W40? Not necessary for 80W90?
Transmission takes 80W90, should hold just shy of 5 gallons.
@@deeredrummer47 thanks! I have a 70 gas that was my grandfather's and for sure it's due for a service. The gas would also hold the 15w40?
@@wesseldebruyn211 if it were mine I would run 15W40 in the engine
