What an interesting video! Yes, I too was looking for a tutorial - a "how" video - BUT (I do wish I could italicize on here...) quickly realised that this "why" video was equally important, and should precede the "how". He makes some really interesting points that I just hadn't thought about and which will now influence my decision-making. Many thanks to the maker of this.
In the time I’ve been quarantined I’ve watched pretty much every video you’ve posted and I’m thankful that I have. I’ve been barbering for five years now and have always been insecure of my cutting because “everyone has cleaner lines” than me or “their fade is more blended” or whatever I see that makes their cut different than mine. So that’s all I’ve focussed on for the past 3 years at least. I now know that I need to work on who is in my chair. The individual. Haircuts are so subjective and that’s not a bad thing. You’re the man and thanks again for helping me study during this time out of the shop 🙏🏻
A unique outlook on buzzcuts. I am glad that I watched this before I buzzed my hair. I too tend to have a few imperfections with hairline Etc. but the oddities work for me. Had I not seen this video prior I might have tried to correct them. I did a 3 1/2 all over AND I managed to do a straight line in back with a T-trimmer. Thanks
always a pleasure to see you talking about hair. you made me see that it's not about "perfection" all the time. once you understand the things, you can "mess it up". greetings from Brazil and the best wishes for you and everybody there in USA.
Thank you for making buzz cuts approachable and full of depth instead of being a one-size fits all approach. I never realized how texture in a buzz actually can add to it - how messy can be a good pairing with your actual clothing... While it may be obvious to a lot of people this gave me good basic understanding of the fact pairings exist for a reason.
I know I'm late to the party and you probably won't see this comment, but this was an awesome video and you helped me to understand what I like and hate about a buzz cut. It's actually a hair style I like a lot but when I get it I'm often not very happy. Here's the story: COVID Lockdown last year, my hair is crazy so I have my wife do her first ever haircut on my head. #8 on top, #6 into a #3 on the sides. I'm looking through some pictures recently and see it and think "who did that haircut? It's the best buzz I ever had". Then I realized it was my wife. She didn't line things up perfectly. She didn't square up the sides. She left it soft and imperfect because that's all she could do and it looked great. I'm going to the barber shop tomorrow armed with that pic and the info you shared to get the buzz again. I'd have my wife do it but it was pretty nervy for both of us and I don't want to tempt fate. If the barber can do as good a job as my wife did on her first attempt I'll be ecstatic. You gave me the vocabulary to explain what I like about it. Thanks!!
Excellent video. The military look part is interesting, because I am quite pro-military, but I have noticed that when I went for a military haircut (#0 fade and buzzcut), I got many weird looks from normal people, and girls especially were not fond of it (even scared). It really put in perspective the negative view lots of people have about the military & soldiers.
I’ve got no beef with military, I’m one of those people who thanks a soldier when I meet them. I only mentioned it here in the video because when my clients ask to go short they often specify that they don’t want to look like they’re in the military 🤷♂️
@@andrewdoeshair Don't worry, I never implied you were anti-military. I was just agreeing that the military look can be off-putting with many people. Personally I like the haircuts because they are so practical for a man (no styling needed). But they are also scary to many people. Especially the more extreme cuts (high & tight).
@@elbabatunde8580 Yes indeed. Going for a slightly longer buzzcut and fade really works better. Too short buzzcut and you look like skinhead, at least that's what people told me (that I look radical).
Damn. This video gives me the confidence I needed to try a buzz cut for the first time! Now I know what to look out for when I get it. Thank you so much!
thank you so much man i recently got a buzzcut and i have a spiral that i thought looked wierd but thanks to you ive accepted it as a charasteristic not an imperfection. Thank you!
In short have a good face & skull If not hope is not lost 1. Grow a beard (stubble can be fine too) 2. Blend it in 3. Find the right guard for you (I'd recommend a 1 but you can start from 3) 4. Get used to it. Most of the time, you actually do look good, but you're not used to it so you feel ugly 5. Wear a nice suit (wearing a suit with buzz cut is super sexy)
First time seeing one your videos. I'm a 44yo woman who recently buzzed my shoulder length hair. This has really helped me understand what I don't like about my current hair, how to address it, and how to own it. Really great advice and info. I don't know where you are, but I wish you were my hairdresser! Lol
Would buzzing my hair with a #4 or #5 guard then scissor over comb cut it to a #3-ish length be a reasonable request for my barber? Or is that too short to scissor cut at that length?
Depends on the barber. A lot of them can do bald fades with scissors, but a lot think it’s a waste of time to go so short with scissors (as clippers can do it faster and the results are so subtly different)
To know whether or not the buzz cut will suit you Just cut your sides the length you want all-over. You can then tell whether or not it will suit you. If the short sides look good, then go for it. If the 0 guard sides look good, then all above will look good as well :)
A guy really has to have a lot of things going for him to look good in a buzz cut. A low forehead and nicely shaped skull, a complete hairline, the right hair texture, nice features, specifically big eyes. For example the model at timeline 9:09.
My hair was pretty damaged from bleach / teasing when I had a mohawk, so I buzzed it all off a few weeks ago with a #2. Then I bleached it again, dyed it a color to placate myself, cried, got over it. At which point I shaved it down to the skin to let my natural hair grow back in. LEMME TELL YA. I'm past the voldemort phase but it's not yet long enough to have any kind of style. Here are my tips: 1. Bought a pretty silk scarf in my favorite color, I wear that a lot. 2. Statement sunglasses! Also very fun. 3. Making peace with my face 4. If anybody won't be into me because my hair looks wack right now, they don't love me for me LMAO
If you would worry so much about whether you should do it, probably a buzz cut is not for you. Just do it and don't bother. Thats the thing about a buzz cut anyway......
Love your videos. I'm not good at giving constructive criticism but I feel this vid could benefit from some pictures showing what you're describing. Keep up the great work!

How to make a buzzcut look cool?: Have a good face.
And a good hair line.
True
Randy Marsh Point is; don’t get a buzzcut if you don’t have a good face.

You need at least one of this 3:
1) Good looking face
2) Good hairline
3) Good facial structure with jawline
I got 2 n 3
I have nice eyebrows I think buzzing would help me show them off. Especially without my long hair in front of my eye brows
