Ironically, one of Hearn's best career performances was in the loss to a prime Leonard in their first fight. He was only a few minutes away from gaining a wonderful victory.

@Anthony Joshua Leonard was a great boxer but I don't give him any credit as a SM or LH champion. It was ridiculous to throw in the vacant SM title when challenging Lalonde for LH title. Also Donny had to weigh in at the SM limit

I always liked Tommy but he wasn’t an intelligent fighter! He failed to tie up Leonard in their first fight. He was foolish to think he could match Haggler blow for blow. Leonard stuck and ran from Hagler, thus winning the fight!

One thing I immediately noticed in the Duran fight. When Hearns put him down the 1st or 2nd time, Duran didn't move his head away, or with the punch, as he always did. I'm thinking Duran was already hurt and simply didn't have the ability to do that, as he always did in his other fights. This was a total mismatch, physically. They may have weighed the same, but Hearns had him in every other category. He must've had at least a foot in reach, 5 or 6 inches taller, etc. I believe Roberto just didn't realize how big Tommy really was.....Until he saw him in the ring. Duran flat looks intimidated here, unlike any other fight I've ever seen him in. You never heard Duran hollering about a rematch, either. I remember when the public was lobbying for this fight,, Emanuel Steward said "Tommy would drive Duran into the ground like a spike"!! And he did! This is almost like Foreman vs Frazier 😳

@@milojanis4901 No. You totally go around history. Duran will go on and fight for years, he will take on the much bigger Iran Barkley and win ! Probably Duran's greatest fight out of 119 . Barkley had just KO'd Hitman in case you forgot. Duran wasn't affraid of anyone . He beat Ray Léonard and Camacho .The same Camacho who knocked out Ray . Roy Jones Jr. The guy came from middleweight and held a heavyweight title at some point. While you can also argue even Roberto Duran is more _legendary._ As he actually *unified* his own division, went up in weight and beat Ray Leonard, quit the rematch(lol), got outboxed by Benitez, totally destroyed Davey Moore who actually beat Benitez, went toe to toe with Hagler, got knocked the fuck out by Hearns and schooled Iran Barkley who actually KO'd Hearns twice. Plus he fought a 34 year old Hector Camacho at the age of 45 and gave an spectacular performance. He's probably the most _interesting_ fighter among the fabulous four. He was the oldest and the smallest one out of the 4. But the guy is basically a shounen manga protagonist lol.

Agree with your list Rummy. Cuevas or Duran was perhaps the hardest choice for me but in the end it is the Duran knockout. I don't know if anyone had done that to Duran before, and i think it was Joppy who next stopped Duran some dozen or so years later when Duran was 46. Also after half a round of feeling out, Hearns went to work and just blew Duran away. Maybe as Gil Clancy said at the time Duran had become old overnight, but then how do you explain the lack of knockout defeats for Duran thereafter.

In my younger years I use to hate Hearns because I use to think he was too cocky. But now I have respect for the Hitman. Hearns without question or argument is the greatest World Class Fighter ever. To win titles from weather weight to light heavey weight says a lot . One of my friends meet him and said he is a down to earth man and a true Christian.

Facilitated bringing Tommy to the Broadway Gym in LA a few years back, to meet with Ms. Larkin's RIP to discuss a project. Got there at 3:30pm on a Friday. The Gym was empty, nothing happening. But, once the word hit the streets around 108th & Broadway, that Thomas Hearns was in The Hood,
the place was packed within a half hour. He had time for everyone, a fun loving gentleman to all the kids. Was a fine day in The Big Los

Tommy is one of my all time favorite fighters. That loooooong jab/right hand combo was so lethal. He beat Sugar in the second fight and got shafted. The Hagler fight broke my heart. If he doesn't break his hand and has just a little more patience I think he wins. I hoped and hoped for a rematch. Hagler was legend, no shame in losing to him. What he did to undefeated Virgil Hill never got coverage it deserved. Virgil Hill first loss and didn't lose again for 6 more years and had 11 title defenses. What Tommy did as a Light Heavyweight doesn't get respect enough !!! I really miss great boxing.

Its kinda crazy that the most versatile Welterweights in the history of boxing were fighting in the exact same era. The only eras that come close were the 2000s featherweights. Imagine that Holyfield, Tyson and Lewis and Bowe primes lined up in the exact same time and they fought each other.

    • @musak.4068
      @musak.4068 3 роки тому

The most versatile welters would've been in the 00s. Holyfield, Tyson, Bowe, and Lewis were all in their primes during the 90s. Mike just happened to be the weakest link because his marketing gave the general public an idea of him that wasn't true in the ring. Mike was always able to dominate weaker competition he showed that in the Golota fight. It's the skilled guys who punch back that always gave Mike trouble even in the 80s.

Hearns is one of the best boxer-punchers ever.
People point to his power, but his skills and ring sense allowed him to throw those bonmbs.
He set Duran up perfectly before knocking him out by flicking some jabs to the body before firing off that missile right hand.

Right after Salvador Sanchez, Tommy Hearns was my next go to fighter that I loved watching. Pre Tyson. Hearns fought and you knew you'd be seeing a fantastic KO. If you weren't alive back then seeing a one punch KO artist is a beautiful man to watch. Doubt we'll ever see one again that is as dominating as Hearns was.

Growing up in Puerto Rico back in the late 70's early 80's I remember that Benitez fight in 82'
Only a man name"Sugar" gave,em his 1st L,but on the bright side of that fight he made 17 mil,
Biggest purse in history at the time and alot of credit should also go to Emanuel Steward for bringing in that hard hitting style,
Being with him from the beginning in '77 I think..Being the 1st boxer to turn the stoned handed panamanian lights off shows just what kinda fighter this dude was
But in Duran's defense he was like 30+ vs Hitman's 25 yrs old

I love these videos by Rummy because they shed light on the many great boxers who I've only heard about through one famous match. For example, I've only heard about Hearns through his war with Haggler. But he was an established fighter by that point for a reason, and it's fascinating to learn why.
