Thomas Hearns as a welterweight is almost unfair lol. His unicornish build at that weight, with an INSANE reach, hand speed, while having that kind of power is something you just never see. Had he played it smart, instead of being the warrior he was, he never would have lost in that division. Such a great fighter, and was a problem for almost every fighter he ever faced, in MULTIPLE divisions. One of the coolest nicknames too.
But he did lose in welterweight to Sugar Ray. That being said, it would have been extremely difficult to make weight as he got older. I read somewhere around the time of his first Leonard fight that he appeared slightly weakened trying to make weight for that fight.
When people say someone like mayweather is the best welterweight ever, you can tell they haven’t watched older boxing. Hearns would have destroyed him. SR Leanard would have beat him too. Different breed.
@@gregpeerenboom7439 Yeah, he did lose to Leonard as a Welterweight, but if you read what I wrote, he only lost to him because he couldnt help but continue to slug it out and be a warrior. Could have should have would have argument simply is not really applicable to boxing. Leonard forced the action and finally caught him with another damaging punch, from which he built on. Hearns was still badly hurt going into the 14th, and had no where to hide.@@chocolatetownforever7537
I wasn’t even alive when Hearns lost to Leonard and it still hurts me to see him lose that fight. Hearns will probably always be my all-time favorite boxer. To me, he was in that same regard as a Mike Tyson, but instead of being “too short” for a HW, he was “too tall” for a WW, haha! They were both freaks who could fight.
I was 13 and I remember it was a big nod to Ray that he beat him the first time. I wouldn't call it an upset, but plenty of sports writers were predicting Hearns. "You're blowing it, kid"
You’re exactly right one being too tall and one being too short. Natural tall big skilled heavyweights could be Tyson and natural shorter skilled welterweights could beat hearns

I still have my jacket with "Motor City Cobra, Thomas "the hitman" Hearns", and all his championship in the back. I don't look specially good with that thing, it's an M size and me not. 🤪 But I don't care.
Isn’t his style where you lower the left hand to your waist or something, and you keep you right to the side of your face? It looks a lot like the Philly Shell Stance. I’m personally trying to learn flicker jabs myself.
In the ring Thomas Hearns was brutal and terrifying. Lightning fast handspeed and stunning combinations with brutal power, all delivered with a constant, cold, piercing stare. Outside of the ring and away from boxing, he was one of the most amiable and respectful and softly spoken people you could ever meet. A true legend in every sense of the word.
A total gentleman. Look what he did after James Shuler's death. Of all the Four Kings he is by far my favourite. If he did not try to KO everyone instead of boxing behind the jab he would have been undefeated.
Hitman Hearns is still a legend in Detroit. Rightfully so. Guy is a true fighter and a physical representation of the city. Tough, hard, and won’t quit. Thank you for making this video on him, he truly deserves the recognition.
The incomparable Motor City Cobra; Tommy looked like the perfect fighter, slim, muscular w/an impossible reach. His fights w/Hagler, Leonard & Duran were era defining. I watched them all, wincing constantly, feeling every punch. I don’t expect to see such battles ever again.
One of the only guys because of his size to begin with when he would go up in weight his punches were just as strong if not stronger with his added weight. Unlike Conor who when he goes to 170 is much weaker than his opponent usually. And at 145 is a monster. Hearns was always lethal at any weight
The Hitman was my favourite boxer growing up, damn did I ever want him to beat Leonard. If he would have been born 10 years earlier or 10 years later, I think he'd get more favorable attention from boxing historians. Being the contemporary of Leonard and Haggler is tough.
He beat Leonard the second time around despite what those bogus scorecards say. He also won more world titles in more weight divisions than Leonard, and was the first man to knockout Duran! He already has Leonard beat with these feats!
@@mider-spanman5577 shame he couldn’t hold on for the win the 1st time too. Hitman was the second best out of them. In reality sugar ray lost the 2nd fight as you mentioned. @@stephenwall5888 You know your onions bro, you are a good follower and student of the sports! Iron sharpens iron, says the Book of Proverbs, and during that 70-80's era there were decidedly 5 stalwarts [some would say "kings"] of the non-heavyweight divisions, namely, [in strictly alphabetical order], Benitez, Duran, Hagler, Hearns and Leonard. They brought out the best in one another -- as, with the exception of Benitez-Hagler that never happened, everyone of them fought every other one. Sugar Ray was the best performing fighter of the lot as he beat all 4, scoring KO in 3 of them, while at the other end of the totem pole Duran was the worst performer losing to all 4, with KO in 2 of those although, ironically, his sole win was against SRL [which was SRL's sole defeat although in reality, despite the scorecards that had it "draw", he lost to Hearns in their rematch in 1989]. So in summary, their greatness was predicated on their having existed together! By reverse logic, those who trol Mike Tyson for reigning over a "weak" division miss the point. Iron Mike pulverised his way through whomever was put in front of him, it wasn't his duty to produce the surplus of enough lionhearted to challenge him -- that is, even if at all it's true that there weren't! 'nuff said.
the Michigan Panthers of the USFL in '83, Detroit Tigers in '84, the Detroit Spirits of the CBA in '85, U-M Wolverines in '89-(NCAA Basketball), MSU Spartans in'89-(NCAA Football), the Detroit Pistons in '89, all of them made every Detroiter proud. But none made us more proud than Thomas Hearns. God Bless you Hit Man.
This will seem crazy, but Hearns is underrated when we think about greatest of all time. 5x champ in different classes and always maintained devastating power. Combination of heart, determination and freakish build.
Hearns’ punching power was awesome in welterweight division, remained deadly at junior middleweight. But while he moved up to the middleweight as a 160 pounder, his power though still devastating, wasn’t as damaging as before. The bout with Hagler lasted only 3 rounds but earned him great respect (it was revealed later that Tommy had broken his hand in the early round). I love and admire Hearns a great deal and always thought he would be a better boxer when he moved up in bigger division because his tall frame can do more good in carrying more weight. Years afterwards SRL admitted at an interview he thought Hearns should’ve won their rematch instead of a draw.
i thought so too as one who watched it on tv....( no pay per view back then we rarely got to see a "live" fight mostly taped, and/or "closed circuit" tv... )
Hearns later revealed that he had a deep tissue massage prior to Haglers fight and by the second round his legs were jelly and couldn't move properly. He knew he was in trouble and was fighting with no legs and no meaningful right.
@@mikejones-mo8xh Hagler is not even top 10 p4p all time. Do your homework. THE RING AND BERT SUGAR ALL HAVE DURAN OVER HAGLER. Not to mention real boxing fans and historians all have Duran top 5 ALL TIME.

That was.. insane. They came out and said “to hell with boxing” and it just became an immediate slug fest. Hearns went all in that night, coming out like that against Marvin Hagler was at best ill-advised . Which is why Hearns rolled the dice. R.I.P Marvin Hagler.

Hell even 21, he would have been unstoppable. He was dominating guys in their 20s while being a 40 something killing machine. But again, his story is so sad!!! My all time favorite fighter. No he wasn't undefeated but he didn't shy away from any challengers. Mayweather and Calzaghe always had excuses by not facing their most serious threats in their primes.
My favorite boxer growing up. Always sat down on his punches from both sides. Beat Sugar Ray in the second fight and was kicking his ass in the first(until he made some technical mistakes) and broke his hand early in his lightning fight with Hagler. Fought everyone, never backed down and always gave 100%. Always an event when he fought. I still feel bad that he just fought too long.
6 TIME 6 TIME 6 TIME WORLD CHAMPION! I will admit I slept on this man's vast accomplishments just like many somehow do, but this documentary enlightened me to how great he truly is and how he dominated the sport of boxing even with so many odds stacked against him!
He's my favourite of the fab four. So fast and so powerful. Such a humble man. So unlucky to draw with SRL. Robbed actually. Marvelous actually ringside said tommy won. And Hagler caught Tommy after an ill prepared lead up.

Tommy will always be my favorite. I’ve never seen a boxer use his body and length quite like that. On the attack, creating space his punches were like an arrow leaving a bow. Then, if he stunned a guy and was able to dig in his feet, you knew that right was coming and it would be all over. In an era of great boxers, Tommy was different. 6 titles in 5 divisions-that says it all. Cheers Tommy!
I was in Traverse Michigan for a Motivation And Performance Seminar. Our group was staying at one of the resorts in the offseason. I went to the dining hall for breakfast one morning, but it was not open yet. I decided to go for a walk. As I roamed the grounds, I saw a lone figure running towards me out of the light fog. I was dumb founded when I realized it was Thomas Hearns finishing his morning run before 7:00 am. And I thought I was an early riser. He was polite and stopped to chat for a few moments. He was there as part of a promotional tour for his fight with Ray Leonard. Hearns, Emmanuel Stewart and the rest of the boxing camp had arrived there the night before. Later that day I realized why Hearns was so successful. He was willing to do what others were not on a daily basis.
I made deliveries to the Kronk back then. Hearns would show up at around 3 every day in an old brown Caddalac. The Kronk doubled as a very small civic center, indoor (old as hell) pool/basketball court. Training was a floor below the pool, where you could hardly breath it was so hot/humid/dank/dark. Young kids running everywhere. Even after he got big, folks there wouldn't pester him, they had autographs from long ago, everybody knew everybody. Cars got a little nicer, but he always had time for everybody and never really had a large group around him, he was there to WORK. Tommy was pure class, humble, and loved by everyone. Same with Emanual. His only beef was the networks forcing the nickname "Manny" on him, he didn't like it a bit. After Hearns, a few big names trained there with Stuart, then the place closed. The Kronk was old and run down. It slowly fell apart, then they tore it down. Just an old brick building that found the destiny of greatness.

Was IT just a nickname tho
When people say someone like mayweather is the best welterweight ever, you can tell they haven’t watched older boxing. Hearns would have destroyed him. SR Leanard would have beat him too. Different breed.
@@gregpeerenboom7439 Yeah, he did lose to Leonard as a Welterweight, but if you read what I wrote, he only lost to him because he couldnt help but continue to slug it out and be a warrior.
That Leonard fight WAS OVER had Thomas stayed away from him in that last round. Thomas wasnt that kind of a fighter though.
Could have should have would have argument simply is not really applicable to boxing. Leonard forced the action and finally caught him with another damaging punch, from which he built on. Hearns was still badly hurt going into the 14th, and had no where to hide.@@chocolatetownforever7537
I’ve met him a couple times at boxing events.
He is a straight up gentleman.
It's okay, he beat him the second time
@@ncommerce I agree, though it was ruled a draw, right?
I was 13 and I remember it was a big nod to Ray that he beat him the first time. I wouldn't call it an upset, but plenty of sports writers were predicting Hearns. "You're blowing it, kid"
You’re exactly right one being too tall and one being too short.
Natural tall big skilled heavyweights could be Tyson and natural shorter skilled welterweights could beat hearns

I once saw tommy walked passed me through a casino, I said “tommy” he stopped looked at me smiled put his hand out and I shook it. THAT MANS HAND FELT LIKE A FUCKING BRICK MAN.

Manny Pacquiao got 8 so it actually has been matched and beaten, but that doesn't take away from hitman's greatness. Isn’t his style where you lower the left hand to your waist or something, and you keep you right to the side of your face? It looks a lot like the Philly Shell Stance. I’m personally trying to learn flicker jabs myself.

A man who truly deserves the title of ‘legend’ 🥊
Dude was a knockout machine
His accuracy and ability to see the combo in an opening. Unreal.

This man is one of the best fighter in boxing history🥊🥊🏆🏅🥉🥈
Props to TH. I have seen roughly a half dozen,
or so, interviews with TH and always humble, down to earth.
One of the only guys because of his size to begin with when he would go up in weight his punches were just as strong if not stronger with his added weight. Unlike Conor who when he goes to 170 is much weaker than his opponent usually. And at 145 is a monster. Hearns was always lethal at any weight
Lol what on earth does this have to do with an MMA fighter 30 years after?
The Hitman was my favourite boxer growing up, damn did I ever want him to beat Leonard. If he would have been born 10 years earlier or 10 years later, I think he'd get more favorable attention from boxing historians. Being the contemporary of Leonard and Haggler is tough.
I would argue the opposite and say that without one another they wouldn't have been as great as they are..
He beat Leonard the second time around despite what those bogus scorecards say. He also won more world titles in more weight divisions than Leonard, and was the first man to knockout Duran! He already has Leonard beat with these feats!
@@mider-spanman5577 Yup and that stoppage against Leonard was early
@@mider-spanman5577 shame he couldn’t hold on for the win the 1st time too. Hitman was the second best out of them. In reality sugar ray lost the 2nd fight as you mentioned. I also think Hagler beat Sugar Ray. Dam shame Hearns broke his hand vs Hagler or who knows wha would’ve happened. Hard to argue any order ya out these 4 in that’s just my opinion. I feel for Tommy about the first srl fight and the 2nd srl fight anyone who watched knows what really happend. Also that hand in Hagler fight such a shame even with that it managed to be one of the best fights ever and it only was 3 rounds lol. Very exciting fighter. Give me Tommy or Floyd Mayweather Jr. my favorite to watch and I’d take those 2 vs anyone.
@@tinaa9231 Agreed!!!
I watched that fight against Sugar and Tommy won. Easily. Tommy put him on the canvas twice.

Was waiting for this one Thomas Hearn one of the hardest punching boxers of all time🔥🔥
Waited a long time for another legendary boxer mini documentary. One of the greatest middleweights of all-time: Thomas“The Hitman” Hearns.
Tommy is the most beautiful soul in boxing.
