Are you more of a Goku or Vegeta? It's a nerdy question, but I think MANY of us were inspired to train by Dragonball Z, if we're being honest with ourselves...
I also think that Dragonball contains a lot of relatable wisdom when it comes to training. I think we see this, for example, with Vegeta's rivalry with Goku. Both could be described as "gymcels." They're both obsessed with training.
But whereas Goku trains for the pure joy of getting stronger and fighting strong opponents; Vegeta is more extrinsically motivated. He trains to be the best - and especially to be better than Kakarot.
We all know how that goes for him. And I think we all, likewise, should focus a little less on what each other is doing. And try, instead, to just have fun with our own training.

Ironically even tho Goku inspired me I def trained more like Vegeta when I was younger cause I was insecure in myself & the felt the need to overcompensate to show I wasn’t weak which led to many unnecessary ego injuries & issues , but have thankfully become a Goku after getting my mental health improved & focus primarily on improving myself to live a strong healthy active life & enjoy it

I train like Vegeta because I do not use PEDs like kaioken.
I would also argue that Vegeta's motivation has a lot to do with him being old enough to remember being enslaved by Frieza, seeing his father the king of saiyans being literally placed under the boot of Frieza, and wanting to never be in that situation again, plus he does train for personal pride which is fine and also what Goku does. Goku is the idiot who trains for fun while also letting Frieza live after having killed the planet and his friends, then gave Perfect Cell a senzu bean before he sent his mainly pacifist son to fight the battle for him. They have different personalities, but Vegeta is the more noble of the two, imo.
Also thinking about it, Vegeta is about 5 years older than Goku, but he grew up enslaved by Frieza. He did not have the luxury of freely training like mad to try to overcome Frieza or he would certainly have been killed. Goku is younger and had access to superior training environments and teachers at an earlier age and for longer than Vegeta, yet Vegeta still more or less keeps up. In later parts, Vegeta is highly protective of his wife and kid. He grows from an angry young survivor bent on revenge for his people into a bonafide protector with a much more noble and relatable reason for training than Goku to me. Vegeta is the more interesting and inspiring character, imo.
    Team Vegeta all day.

DBZ is a cross-cultural phenomenon as well; inspiring bodybuilders as well as martial artists. In training I would say I'm Goku on my best days, and Vegeta on my worst. I am currently going for 100% achievements in Skyrim, since I have put so much time into it I want to say goodbye to it in a rewarding way. Then move onto the next thing! I will be doing the same in the spring as well with my training; finding a goal to achieve

What a fantastic video. I was expecting a much more silly video looking at the topic, but you really surprised me with this philosophical take. While I don't think being a 'Vegeta' is necessarily bad, I do agree with you that being a 'Goku' is much cooler, enjoyable, and productive.
If for you training is a grind, you'll never defeat someone for whom training is a joy.

I would disagree. If you are strong willed enough to go through your training even though you hate it, you could train harder than someone who think it is fun.

I never really got into Dragonball, so I’m not overly familiar with the characters, but going by the descriptions you gave, I think I’m definitely more of a Goku. I definitely have moments where ego gets in the way and I’m trying to keep up with another guy in the gym, like Vegeta, but for the most part I see the gym as a playground. I don’t have a specific goal or program in there, I’m just there to have fun. If I come out drenched with sweat or gasping for air, I’ve got my money’s worth. For me, running is where discipline comes in. I’m not built for it, I hate it while I’m doing it, and I’m always thinking about numbers; longer distances, faster kilometres. I think it is more an exercise in mental toughness than anything else.
Those two aspects really form the yin and yang of my fitness routine.

I feel like you could break down most of the main characters and their respective training reasons/drives.
Goku - embraces an intrinsic passion for strength and proclivity for light-hearted combat, though strives to be the best there is and finds encouragement and inspiration in the success of others
Vegeta - his ego fuels him and indignation from inferiority compels him; he brandishes the pride in his strength and ability to flaunt his superior power around others
Piccolo - stoic and dutiful, he trains because he knows that his duty relies on his strength
Krillin - enjoys being strong and fast and when he was younger he relished the competition between friends, finding that through gaining strength on the outside, he also gained strength on the inside
Tien - power flows naturally through his veins and a life of training is really the only way he knows how to live; he once strove to be the strongest on the planet, but now trains to be the strongest version of himself
Yamcha - chases an external strength to combat an inner weakness, he once believed that this was the path to find success in love, but ultimately finds a pride and self-satisfaction through training and power
Gohan - mostly trains because his dad makes him (first Piccolo, then Goku)
Future Trunks - understands a more rounded purpose in training; while the general asthetic of a chiseled frame is nice, with might also comes the ability to protect those around you and also provides an inner discipline and path to greater character
This is my take on the cast, at least. This was a really fun thought exercise that I'd never really considered before.

In many training methods they use an 80+20% motivation which is also great for other areas. Like aiming to be 80% Goku, but still put in the grind. Which is also what Goku does.
When we learn to trust our motivation and aversion then we can learn to build our lives fluidly into what works for us. Such a great motivation. Thank you for sharing!

As you know one can be a master runner, a swimmer or a climber or only jack of all trades. A martial artists must work on his specific twitch muscle. Not that he can't work on all his physique but again specificity conflicts with perfection in all dimensions. Would love your thoughts on this topic.

This is something that seems obvious but surprisingly enough isn't most times.
I know I myself optimize my life for enjoyment which admittedly does make some things quite hard but I found I am better able to stick to working out when doing exercises that I actually enjoy doing.
I find bodyweight exercises to be more fun than weighted exercises but even still there are certain weighted exercises that I do enjoy more than others.
Theres multiple different ways to work whatever muscle group you want to work or train but if you don't enjoy whatever exercise you're doing to work that muscle then you're never going to want to train that muscle because the exercise itself isn't enjoyable.
That's why it's good to experiment with trying new exercises which is honestly one of the reasons I like watching these videos is cuz you usually have exercises that I've never heard of before or never seen and I mean I'll give it a shot it might just turn out to be my favorite.

For me there is a mayor difference between the ones who like technically difficult things or not, because if you like the hard skill demanding things all becomes easy to progress and enjoyable.

Something I’m trying to learn also but every time you shoot a jab try and move your head off line to right and when you shoot your back hand move the left just get used to moving it off line so if you ever have to throw a 1-2 you’re less likely to get counter chinned etc

I haven't watched that show since the early 2000s. I am glad it's getting popular again but I avoid following the herd so I guess I'm out of experience when it comes to remembering training methods so please, please enlighten me

I used to be more driven like Vegeta, maybe a decade or so ago, I've gradually become more and more like Goku (in the sense that you're framing them for this video). However, I think there is an optimal advantage to having both play driven workouts with emphasis on the experience and boring grind workouts which require discipline.... each will trian your body and mind in different ways... we need to be able to be present and enjoy the moment, find the fun in life, but also we need to be able to think ahead and be able to do the things we don't wanna do.... I wanna ideally have that goku mentality for the majority of my training, but each week have one or 2 workouts that are more Vegeta or even Goggins (but not as extreme where it leads to injureis, just repetitive and hard where it becomes an internal battle of will, cuz winning that battle keeos you "fit" for other things you wanna put off in life).

Bioneer, I'm more like Goku most of the time. I prefer to make sure I'm having fun with my training and enjoying the sense of a challenge. I get quite enthusiastic when I try different things in my exercise. I'm always like, "Oh boy, let's give this a go. Lmfao this was actually fun. let's do it again!" I'll sometimes push myself, but not too much, just enough. I prefer to take things slow and appreciate the moment of what I did in my physical training during my rest days.

I’ve been thinking about this since the video came out, but I think I finally reached a conclusion. He’s not a dbz character, but I try to have the luffy mindset. See when he trained he trained to prepare, to prepare for a life at sea and to prepare to protect his crew. His goal is an ambitious one and he knew that he needed to be strong enough to achieve it. Luffy very much looks to the future so he prepared himself for that future. As someone who plans on doing something as physically demanding as ocean rescue I’m trying to get my body to the point where physicality isn’t even an obstacle, so I can focus on what really matters

It's the same for so many things. Quitting smoking, it's much better to be a Goku than a Vageta for the same reason, running out of willpower. If you can convince yourself that smoking is the cause of all of your cravings, which it literally is, and really internalize that, you can make yourself not *want* to smoke. Then you don't have to spend all of your limited willpower on constantly holding yourself accountable, each craving can be a reminder of the progress you've made.
Well, if anyone is trying to quite I recommend Alan Carr's the easy way which basically just goes over all of the terrible ways smoking affects you in order to help you make this mental shift, but it's the same for weight training. Finding what motivates you and focus on that, rather than forcing yourself, definitely works better for me.
